Trying to quit smoking...

I got some Nicorette and I am trying to quit smoking cigarettes. I’ve been smoking since I was 19 and I’ve successfully quit a few times before. My sister picked up the gum and accidentally got me the 2mg kind instead of 4mg and they wouldn’t exchange it, so I’m stuck with the shit. Anyone else trying to quit or has already quit these damn cancer sticks for good?

I started using the vape pens from the gas stations. But I found myself smoking even more because of the convenience. Honestly I just cut back to about 3 a day while driving and at lunch.

It’s not as difficult as many make it sound. I would have a harder time quitting smoking herb.

It’s pretty tough when drinking at a bar or going to a club, I smoke a lot then.

Started smoking at 18, and I've quit smoking by using a vape for a couple of months, and gradually lowering the nicotine in the e-liquid I purchased, until I reached 0% and then quit the vape too. Worked like a charm.

yeah I never thought I'd be able to not smoke when drinking but the vape saved my ass, now I don't need either.

For some people, it takes no effort. While other people never fully quit. What makes it difficult is if you hang out with people who also smoke, that puts a barrier on fully quitting. Try all of the options, gum, patch, vape and see if any of those ween you off. You can even try cold turkey if you have the willpower to do so. Good luck to you in whichever method you decide to choose.

I've been smoking for more then 15 years. I don't plan on quitting.
I tried quitting a few times but I quickly went back.
If you're really set on quitting, I suggest going cold turkey. Just quit and be done with it. It'll be rough for the first 2 weeks. After that it's smooth sailing. My close friend quit this way and he says it's just the first 2 weeks. After that, you're golden.

I started smoking at the age of 15 and one day I was fed up because smoking is an enemy of my Crohn's and I quitted immediately in ONE DAY

Those gums are a joke, vaping is a joke too and no it isn't any better option. How mentally strong are you? If you have the will you'll stick to it immediately

I’m pretty mentally strong. The gum seems like a joke, but it’s helped me quit in the past. It’ll be tough because all of my friends and family smoke, but I will do it.

I quit 5 years ago. I used the gum. Now I just chew normal gum. I've quit this and heroin. I'll be honest there were times I thought the smokes were harder. It's hard to get away from them because every where I go people smoke. I don't hang out with junkies any more so I'm not around it.

Now it doesnt even bother me. Neither one does. But today I just turned 37 so who knows if I'll smoke again. I hope not. This is the longest I've ever quit and I haven't done drugs or drank in over 6 years.

I believe you'll be able to do it instantly if you are convinced deep inside that you wanna quit

I know how much a cig is SO FUCKING GOOD after food. I know that very well but god knows how much I fought the urge

Well, keep it up, dude. You’re doing great. Don’t go back to that shit.

And Mista, you’re right. The after meal cigs were always the best ones.

There are all these rituals smokers have. Like when I wake up, first cig feels awesome. Then a cig with coffee. Then cig after every meal.

I’ve got to the point where the cigs choke me up and make me cough bad. I’ve been dry heaving before. I don’t know that I can tolerate it anymore, hence the quitting. Plus, I’d like to save the cash I’m spending on these bastards.

I want to quit, but I keep on smoking because if not I would be bored at work and have no reason to take a break every 1.5-2 hours (I only take quick 5 min smoke breaks and no other breaks all day).

But I am going to bite the bullet and ask my doctor to prescribe me something and go for it.

If your body is telling you to stop what more insensitive do you want then just flat out quitting cold turkey.
You have to be mentally tough.

Pretty accurate. I developed an addiction to Nicotine and THC last year (people act like it isn't habit forming). I just looked both and threw it into the compost pile for my garden and I'm never looking back. Once you get over that haze and understand you're going to irritable for a bit it's smooth sailing after the first couple of weeks.

This too. But maybe that's what some people need vs going through the motions of "Use less till you quit (Which only works with alcoholics)" and then falling right back into the habit. Once I removed all of it from my house I just sorta stopped caring?

Switched out the smokes for a vape 6 months, it doesn't even bother me when my mrs lights up now. Going to gradually reduce the nicotine levels than kick my nicotine addiction for good. I still enjoy a bowl of weed every now and then.

thats how I did it, good luck!

With all habits, trying hard itself will never work. Just give yourself (your body) some breathing space and tone it down step by step. :messenger_winking: Smoking itself isn't bad, it is the mindset itself that can develop into a habit that is unhealthy; restlessness, insecurity, etc.

I've never been a day-to-day smoker myself, but I did enjoy smoking in company from time to time. I have no problems with smokers either way.

Smoked for 7 years. I kinda just stopped. Gum didn't make a difference.

Smoke a half-pack instead of a full pack a day (that was my peak). Smoke a pack a week. Ration your cigarettes. Stop visiting the gas station / corner store where you pick up cigs. Stop buying lighters. Stop buying energy drinks with your cigs.

It's a habit, so just aggressively demolish whatever habitual visits you're making to enable the habit.

I smoked for 25 years and I just quit. It's all just will power, all you have to do is just not do it. Ecigs, nicotine gum, patches and so on just are things that make it harder to quit because you're just supplementing one thing for another.

I just had to tell myself I wasn't going to buy cigarettes. It isn't that hard really, you just have to not do it and realize it isn't an actual need. People just convince themselves it's a need and convince themselves it's really hard to quit.

All you need is the will to do it. You also have to be ready to quit because if you haven't convinced yourself you're ready you won't quit.

You won't quit until you're ready. It has to truly hit you that it's time to stop.
If you have any doubts at all; anything similar to, "I'll only do it on weekends," or "But it goes so well with drinking," or anything else, you won't quit.

Cold-turkey is also the only way to do it.
There's no such thing as "quitting" cigarettes. There's either quit, or not quit.

Pro tip: Use 2-3 pieces at a time until that 2mg box runs out. Yes, gum is how I quit smoke. In the US you can get gum for free if the state has a quit hotline. I also recommend Dryft and Zyn, which are nicotine pouches. I had a huge nicotine addiction after I quit smoking. I got addicted to the gum. The gum isn't cheap. You're buying Nicorette which is like $40. I bought the Walmart brand (Equate?) and it was 120 pieces for a little over $20. NRT is super expensive if you're buying name brand stuff.

I recommend eBay because sometimes you can get the name brand stuff for less because its expired. Its not exactly expired by an incredible long time and the stuff is still good. I recommended the pouches because they're super cheap and there's no tobacco. Of course its nicotine derived from tobacco, but there aren't any concerns. I'd be more concerned if you picked SNUS.

I highly recommend NRTs until you quit smoking. I used two pieces of 4 mg when I first started. You'll start getting annoyed by the sweet taste and if you do it for over a year then your jaw might feel like you've nawing on leather for hours on end. Those aren't exactly deal breakers IMO. The gum got me off smokes period. I replaced that entire feeling with the gum.

I was a pack a day smoker from the age of 17 until I was about 24. I use to leave in the middle of the night to buy a pack. Then one night I went to Walmart and bought a box of 4 mg gum. That's when I finally quit.

I tried the gum too, didn't do shit. It was so ineffective I thought I was doing something wrong.

Vaping nicotine helped me quit. It was a decent enough stopgap that it helped me wean myself off them, and eventually I just lost interest in doing that too.

I miss those smokes, though. Nothing like lighting one up at night right before bed.

Have you thought about vaping? Its easier to ween yourself off the nicotine that way.. at least, it was for me. Now I don't vape either.. and I used to smoke about a pack a day.

Glad I never started smoking, but I had no trouble getting off smack so maybe I just don’t have an addictive personality. But I hear smoking’s even harder, so...

Plus, first kiss was with a smoker. Gave me good incentive to steer clear at a young age.

started smoking at 16 stopped completely for 8 years at 27 and now I started again though I only smoke 4-5 a day instead of a pack i used to when i was younger. The biggest think that helped with quitting smoking that 8 year period was finding shit to do constantly be it work, exercise, playing games basically anything that needed some sort of movement. oh and lots of gum

Thanks man!

I've seen multiple hardcore nicotine addicts quit after reading Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

I've read his book and whilst I didn't stop smoking it did make me realise that I don't enjoy smoking and that I'm only lighting up to top up my nicotine levels and to fend off the nicotine cravings. It's a very good book and it did change the way I viewed smoking. I wasn't strong enough to go cold turkey that's why I'm lowering my nicotine levels gradually, and then stopping. But I do highly recommend others to read it as it is a good book to fully understand your own addiction.

Update time. Been about 24 hours since I had a cigarette. The most intense craving was after dinner last night. The gum is working for me like it did the other times. Earlier I doubled it up and chewed 2 pieces of the 2 mg gum and it kinda seemed strong, but it curbed the craving more than just the single piece. Looks like I’m well on my way of quitting these bastards. I am happy about that.

It's a rough roller coaster that can be very dependent on the amount of stress your under. I've had times where I naturally stopped without really thinking about it when there were stress free times in my life. Work was relatively stress free, as well as bills, etc.

Then I've had times where I worked somewhere incredibly stressful and I would be back to nearly a pack a day within a week.

Wife and I tried to quit many times over the years. One of us would cave and it's damn near impossible to not smoke when your wife is doing it or vice versa.

She was on champax and that worked I think. After a Mexico trip with friends we started smoking again.

When we were trying to get pregnant a about 2 years ago we both did it. Fuck was it hard. Had to completely quit drinking. So yes... 2 years smoke free.

I've had the odd drag here and there if a co worker or someone's smoking around me and I really want some. Always makes me stomach turn and k wonder how I used to smoke these things.

Haven't had a single craving in the last 6 months. Don't miss it. Such a gross habit.
Wife says she still gets cravings if someone's smoking on a TV show or movie.

i think it helps that I smoke pot still. There's something enjoyable about the act and feeling of smoking. I'll never quit smoking pot

Good luck President Evil President Evil this shit is hard but worth it.
I used vaping to help me kick it around 3 years ago, which made it relatively easy but stopping the vaping is just as hard. Stay strong 👍🏻
