Twitch Plays The Stock Market

Fucking "buy GF
1x
" lmao

I know what I'm doing for the next week

Haha!

Watching it, it's weirdly engaging. I might start voting.

I wonder if this somehow will manage to spawn another emergent narrative a la TPP.

Oh well, at least the stream also works as a decent radio.

This shit is already pissing me off. Dumbasses are doing the whole "hurr durr buy GF" meme when they need to do the smart thing and sell SNAP. It's the only logical move since Instagram's been eating into the SNAP IPO for months now.

Why wouldn't it be?
I believe you need to have passed the FINRA Series 7 exam to even be allowed to buy or sell stocks from somebody's account.

This is actually a really interesting legal gray area because the users are effectively doing the transaction and he can't claim he was just taking suggestions from them.

So when will a bronze statue of a Twitch emote be placed next to the Charging Bull and the Fearless Girl on Wall Street?

There's no need to be smart here, it's not like you're going to make any money off this thing. Might as well troll it with memes.

Isn't it open to insider trading too? He doesn't know whos behind those twitch accounts.

1x
what good is money if you have no one to share it with
1x

But why, though?

I mean this is probably the craziest setup I've seen for a Twitch stream, if only because they're juggling $50,000 for real on the stock market. ...and apparently are up by $60?

I wonder how this will go for them long term, it's definitely going to be interesting to check in with later.

But then you sell snap and still have no GF. Maybe you're in the wrong here.

I guess this is the a logical step in the evolution of the meme economy.

I guess as long as it's just owner's money and nobody else's, I see no problem with that. It'll be funny to see where this goes. Internet loves playing "Armchair X", why not stock trader?

how often can twitch trade the same stock?

i thought there were some rules about that. 3-day waiting period or something
For buying/selling the same stock, you are subject to wash sales rules.

The 3 day waiting period is for cash accounts. If you buy/sell your positions too often, you are classified as a pattern day trader and have to maintain $25,000. So for this guy's account it would not matter.

Wait, they're buying up SNAP? Eww, why? I guess I can't be too surprised. I expected them to hover towards video game companies

This has potential. One share every five minutes feels kinda slow though; speeding things up by one or two minutes would make things more interesting imo.

OMFG!

That would be an amazing Black Mirror epsiode. People go online and vote in laws. They're effective immediately.

Not an unprecedented idea. Bunch of sci-fi stories feature direct democracies or demarchies running continuous votes over Internet or mind-jacks or whatever.
