Twitter Death Watch |OT| How long until the bird dies?

From what I’ve gleamed from software engineers I know, pretty much all of tech lets you work from anywhere and will wash your balls daily if you can do the job.
Work from home is fine - I’m talking low hours, high compensation and all the perks that come with working at a big tech company.

Low hours? Got any source?

As someone in this industry I am totally baffled at the comments here - I mean, I'm not exactly since people rather hate than think, but it's basically "lazy devs" in the Gaming forum but doesn't stop the hero worship.

Anyway, tech folks are like any other group, generally hard working and proud of their work and want to be treated that their work has value. They also know they bring a ton of value to solving many companies problems, and are smart enough to know their value. Which matches what everyone should expect - getting paid a fair wage for their services that matches the value they bring.

Elon Musk makes electric vehicles viable and revolutionizes human space flight: YAY ELON MUSK!
Elon Musk buys a social media platform people liked to weaponize to silence their political enemies and has objectively harmed it and has put its financial future in contention in the span of a week: FUCK ELON MUSK!
Fixed your post since it was missing relevant info. Also

Dude works in a soup kitchen every week to feed the homeless: YAY DUDE
Dude shoots a puppy: FUCK DUDE

One’s former good choices does not negate the dumb/awful choices made later.

It's not relevant info when it's not why people are trying to kill him over buying Twitter. The people most mad at him for buying it are the same who used it as a weapon to silence their enemies. Now he's taking that away from him so they want him dead.

Unless you expect a campaign of sabotage.
That kind of thing stays with you in the IT industry. Intentionally sabotaging a transition is to me one of the biggest red flags of someone that can't be trusted in in the industry. These are engineers that have to work for a living.

The only company gonna hire that guy is a Company that wants to be known for hiring that guy....for about a week until they fold because their product didn't go viral.

Exactly.. Its one thing to maybe take a shot after you are fired..(Even that should be well thought out).. But you do not knowingly sabotage your employer.

He's going to lose a ton of money before the year is over. And probably cost a lot of small businesses a lot of exposure and sales by prioritizing blue checkmarks over non-blue checkmarks. Especially if they're just starting out and don't have the funds for $8/mo. Trust... That's a lot, especially for small families who don't have a lot (small things add up).

I don't even have my own Netflix anymore because of how much everything costs.

That said... Elon doesn't seem to even be trying to understand how to run a social media company.

I've never used Twitter personally, just read quite a few tweets, it is a very toxic platform now, something had to be done, if you said hello or good morning, you'd get called everything under the sun and attacked lol, i don't think Musk is doing that bad a job so far, i support free speech.

Basically this.. 100% true of Software Engineers and well most IT Engineers in general.

Its about being able to do the job, and meet deadlines. Not everyone is cut out for the demands.

I’m just having a laugh at how bad he’s bungling it… by all means keep advancing battery and rocket tech. Tesla and SpaceX have done amazing things and I can’t deny what it all could mean for humanity. Maybe some people want him dead I guess but I really just think it’s hilarious watching something akin to Tom Brady, GOAT QB, just pick up and try to play a violin for the first time on the world stage and think it’ll go over well.

Elon Musk makes electric vehicles viable and revolutionizes human space flight: YAY ELON MUSK!

He did neither of those.

Now look into SolarCity, The Boring Company, HyperLoop, Solar Roof, Self Driving, Tesla Semi, Nuking Mars, city-to-city travel by rocket, etc.

But they would be doing it to save the free world and given a badge of honor in San Francisco. And a Hollywood movie to celebrate the heroes.

I really hope Elon has some masterplan to turn Twitter into WeChat, otherwise he really did just burn 50 billion dollars on nothing.

Damn, that looks really bad.

I just have to wonder if he wants the bad press at this time for engagement purposes. It's hard to make sense of it all.

Alternatively, or perhaps in addition, maybe he hates the journalists who hate him so much that the first order of business was to take their elite "I'm special" badge and give it away to anyone with eight dollars. Because there's no way he's making up for advertiser loss with that subscription, so he has to have some other motive here.

I've never understood the elevated, almost mythical status given to journalists & the profession, in the US.

Here in the UK, they're basically seen as a bunch of dirt-bags on the same level as 2nd hand car salesman.

This simply isn't true. Only the tabloid 'journalists' have that reputation (and quite a few of them are actually very intelligent; the tabloids are the only place they can get a job though, so they end up pumping out that shit).

Serious journalists absolutely do have a good reputation in the UK. Most are seen as just other people, but the best are minor celebrities, though many of those are more news presenters than journalists.

Engineers flock to Tesla and SpaceX because they're on the cutting edge of exciting new technology and they can have some of the highest impact in their respective fields. It's also a prestige position that will make the rest of their careers, even if the workplace environment is hellish and underpaid.

No one will ever see working at Twitter in that same light under Elon's management. We can see that Elon is already trying with his "foster a free speech platform for citizen journalism" spiel, but it's just a big social media site. These Twitter devs have plenty of options elsewhere in the industry where they won't be treated like garbage.

Unfortunately, with the current state of the tech industry, they might not easily find jobs, at least for a while. Not everyone is cutting their workforce, but many are, and if they aren't not looking to expand it much.

And I'm not really sure what most Twitter devs have to offer. The platform has barely changed in years.

It's a dense, gigantic platform. Lots of I/O on the backend, lots of data science, a whole lot of databasing and engineers working on those databases (pretty sure Twitter built their own DBM for some purposes). Messaging. Analytics. Advertising. Moderation and AI for moderation. Services performing all kinds of tasks that are hidden to the user. All on different platforms that have their own intricacies. The list goes on and on. Though the user experience hasn't changed much in the past few years, there's a lot going on under the hood.

The salient point from all of this is probably that no-one should wholeheartedly support extremely rich businessmen, just because they may have certain similar political and social opinions. Musk is flawed, all of this idiocy with Twitter proves that, but that does not mean he has not also contributed positively in other areas.

That level of nuance is admittedly something that's extremely rare in a world where things like Twitter exists. Which I guess is fairly ironic, all things considered.

Regarding the Android dev he fired publicly.

So basically Musk fired that Android developer earlier, who wrote the software, for telling him the truth. But he didn't like the truth. Another ex-engineer (not for Twitter) who is just poking around in their client had to explain to Musk how and when his own company uses GraphQL in this scenario.

So it's obvious now Musk didn't understand the architecture. He was confusing interactions / RPC's between the microservices and his backend servers, with that of the clients and their front-end servers.

We're witnessing some of the poorest tech leadership ever. All he needs to do is discuss these things with his employees and trust them. And for God's sake, take it to Slack or email, these are business matters.

This speed run into the ground just keeps accelerating.
