Twitter says Super Mario Bros movie is mediocre, boring, uncreative - the Live action movie was better

A lot of people seem to be trying to deflect criticism. "Mario has no story" "it's for kids!" "were you expecting Citizen Kane?" etc My issues with the movie go far beyond story/plot. A simple story is fine, most movies don't really have complex plots, but they get by with good writing and direction. This one simply looks and sounds obnoxious in every way, just like everything Illumination has made. The cheap repetitive "humor", bizarre choice of voice actors, overbearing character animation/acting.. it's so jarring and unappealing, and way overdone at this point. Wish people demanded better.

Have you seen the movie yet? You say that we should demand better but we are talking about a mass market children's movie. If my kids enjoy it and we have a nice time together then what more should I demand? I think any attempt at looking for meaning in a Mario movie is silly.

We are also discussing a critical industry which gave you story 4 the academy award for best animated picture over the beautiful and intricate Klaus because Disney. It's hard to take critics seriously when they consider by the numbers Pixar/Disney movies to be the pinnacle of entertainment.

Meaning? I just want something a bit better than the usual cliches and cheap gags plaguing animation today. And as for being strictly for children? I guess I forgot that Mario, as an ip, is only meant to appeal to kids. I thought one of its biggest appeals was that it could be enjoyed by anyone.

No, and I don't plan to. I already know what to expect from Illumination.

Seriously? That makes your OP pretty pathetic tbh. Maybe lead with that before passive aggressively complaining about deflected criticism. My bit about citizen Kane isn't deflecting. I'm genuinely baffled at reviews for a Mario movie that say "looks great, safe for family, lacking substance". Who expects deep plot or an exploration of the human condition from a franchise that has no real narrative beyond "save the princess and occasionally play a sport"?

What an idiot.

I dream of a F-Zero movie and it better has this scene in it (including the song which steals the scene)

Curse you Miyamoto for hating F-Zero GX and saying "there's nothing more that Nintendo can do with the franchise" since Sega poisoned the well or some shit. It's not like they're not milking the hell out of their other franchises, is one F-Zero game every 20 years too much to ask for? Ofc, GX had cutting-edge graphics for its time, a feat now impossible thanks to the archaic hardware.

The problem is that F-Zero is a pretty niche franchise. F-Zero GX did really bad despite its quality. That's why we aren't getting more. And I don't remember Miyamoto hating GX.

This game had the camp dialed up to perfection. Other lyrics pearls include "Are you prepared to play the game? The dare's the only price of faaaame!", or my personal favorite, "I'm a hero, F-Zeeeeeeroo!"

It sold 1.5m on the Gamecube, that's pretty respectable tbh. Would easily do 5m+ on Switch.

I recall a Miyamoto interview talking about GX, like "we gave the license to Sega and look what happened".

Oh, you're right. I thought it did like 300k worldwide. That's pretty good. On par with the Metroid games so there's no excuse for the lack of new entries.

Hmm. Will have to look it up. Not sure what he expected?

So, the Despicable / Minions series have scores ranging from 50% - 80% and the franchise is alive and well. Since this is made by a studio that strictly makes kids movies, I'm expecting exactly that, a kids movie. It wasn't made for me, it was made for my 5 and 8 year old. Shockingly, the games aren't made for me either and, for the most part, the franchise in general is for kids despite us grown adults still playing them. So when it comes to reviews, some of you movie snobs probably need to just relax. No one cares if you're going to see a kids movie.

It's hilarious to see angsty nerds getting this angry over kids movies. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse are also kids movies as well. Again, it's funny people have to give their expert opinion on something that wasn't created for them.

Mario targets all ages. At least the games.

It's hilarious to see such butthurt attitudes over opinions on a movie.

Definitely. I'm 40 and Mario and his weird af crew still targets me in my dreams.

Last night Kirby tried to persuade me saying stuff like there weren't multiply global resets following world wide cataclysms and the world fairs weren't remnants of a prior civilization hijacked by the elite to manifest a narrative which would eventually caused a very, very dark consensus reality.

At least his rim game is A+

Interesting

So has anyone here actually gone to see it yet? Spoiler clips are already hitting youtube and I'm not gonna get a chance to see this until the weekend (and I'm weak to spoilers so...).

Nah, you're acting ridiculous and you got called out. Grow up and stop calling people who disagree with you idiots or you're not gonna last long here junior. It's ok to debate and have differing opinions, but you're behaving like a pretentious jackass and you have the audacity to speak down to others....kinda pathetic.
You freaking moron. I didn't call him an idiot for disagreeing with me. I didn't attack or insult anyone until some deranged dickhead (who hasn't even seen the movie but feels the need to defend it) felt personally offended by my opinion on the movie and started making disparaging remarks like a baby while creating strawmen. Stop being attempting to be such an online though guy. Fucking blowhard.

Twitter is talking a lot of garbage about lots of things.
I am convinced these guys are not capable of having “positive opinions”.

Negative opinions elicit stronger emotional responses. Social media is built around negativity. Twitter especially. Jaron Lanier wrote a neat book explaining the phenomenon from the perspective of one who designed early social media.
