If you didn't like how the business model was, wouldn't it be simpler to just not associate with them. A simple, "looks great, but I'm not interested after reading up further." would have been enough.
What part of Polygon's code of conduct does that violate, exactly?
It violates the basic tenets of journalism, for starters. This goes back to whether or not you consider Kotaku and the like journalism, and what they consider themselves to be.
She's an advocate for women's rights, and felt like women were being exploited. Making noise about it is basically her raison d'etre.
Pretend I am a small child and explain which specific rule is being broken.
Act Independently
Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.
Journalists should:
Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.
Were a tabloid at heart. You ask if we have a policy. There is no policy for this, or for anything, really. The whole point of the company is that we trust our reporters to be smart and judicious without having to adopt the ethical pretense that what theyre doing is anything but a sort of professionalized rudeness.
Ill get killed for this, but: Journalism ethics is nothing more than a measure of the scurrilousness your brand will bear. Thats it. Ethics has nothing to do with the truth of things, only with the proper etiquette for obtaining it, so as to piss off the fewest number of people possible. That works fine for a lot of news outlets; we dont have to worry about niceties.
Seemed more like she was annoyed that she wasn't their "industry resource" as per one of the tweets. Then goes on to recommend supporting her Patreon instead of their project.
Let's not try to make people into angels because we'd like them to be. People need to be called out on bad behavior, regardless of the causes they support or may claim to support. Based on what I've read thus far, seems pretty baseless bashing.
I see a lot of it on twitter. People calling out and bashing in general. Its pretty horrible, and my feed is full of it. Now I'm seeing a lot of devs bash fans and humiliating them or trying to. Same with some media folks. It's really shameful. I'm pretty disgusted by what people are doing on all sides.
What a disgrace. And then the community wants to know why we aren't taken seriously...
How can a community intend to reform something like gender, race, or equality, when it doesn't seem to have evolved past bashing each other with rocks like cavemen? Why would you take them seriously?
You don't bring people over to your way of thinking by humiliating them. That's just something bullies do to make themselves feel more important.
Such disgusting and shameful behavior.
If you didn't like how the business model was, wouldn't it be simpler to just not associate with them. A simple, "looks great, but I'm not interested after reading up further." would have been enough.
I don't think I said anything about Zoe Quinn being a saint, I'm saying that going on the attack when she's thinks someone is exploiting women is the fundamental role of a women's rights activist. Which it is. You think it's disgusting and shameful the way she blew up on Twitter; well she thought that TFYC project was disgusting, shameful and exploitative.
As for her tweet suggesting people donate their money to female devs directly rather than TFYC, so what? She didn't like what they were doing because no money was going to the women involved, so she suggests an alternative option where it does. Again, this is not somehow bad behaviour. It's the nature of activism.
And for the record, I don't know why this thread seems to have become yet another moratorium on Zoe Quinn despite the fact that she is only tenuously linked to this incident. Even TFYC want to distance themselves from the hate campaign some unpleasant internet folk have been running against her these past few weeks, so I really am at a loss as to why this is once again about her.
and yet again somebody who didn't listen to TFYC side what so ever. The whole point of TFYC was to take a non experienced woman and allowing her to pitch an idea and let people vote on said idea via TFYC voting. The winning pitch would be then be made for FREE for the winning woman and at the end of it all she would keep the IP and rights to everything involved while receiving 8% profit. Another chunk of the percentage of profits would then go to help pay more to the team who helped make the game. and further the rest would go to a chairty. The women involved besides the woman that was doing the pitch were fully paid off and everything, the leader of the whole thing doesn't make any profit only getting back the money he funded it with. Exact spot he says it..
So no this whole campaign was not going to exploit women it was actually going to support many women and even enter in some women into the gaming industry was a fresh already made IP to work with. Even better is also if said Woman making the pitch wanted to leave with her ideas and go to another developer to make said game they were in all right to do it.
EDIT: Heck here is even more proof that she just attacked the whole thing for no reason Video proof of all of her tweets about it. showing her exact tweets and even better is this site isn't fake that found these tweets here is even my twitter shown with everything I've actually said.
That's nice, except that I did listen to TFYC side already. And I also didn't say that I agreed with Zoe Quinn, I said that there's nothing surprising or otherwise untoward about her discouraging people from donating money to a project where an aspiring designer doesn't get the money directly versus using a direct donation. You say there is "proof" she attacked the project for no reason, I say she stated her reasons and you just disagree with them.
And again, why the fuck are we still talking about Zoe Quinn? If you think TFYC cause is a good one, why not encourage people to support them instead of continuing this weird hatefest against Quinn?
Even small children can read. I'll just copy/paste the most relevant section:
Now, this is the philosophy Gawker pretty much follows, as stated by the Editor-in-Chief of Deadspin:
They've got a long laundry list of ethics violations. It's not really surprising to see this show up at Kotaku of all places. Very few games 'journalists' are even pretending to be serious writers with a moral compass to begin with.
That you're somehow nonplussed or unmoved by Kuchera's direct financial links to a person he or his organization is covering is a testament to where the industry is at right now in terms of media coverage. It's a circus.
Since no one else has pointed it out, and we're very concerned about accuracy from both sides, this image managed to duplicate at least 3 tweets. That's incompetence at best.

I don't doubt their authenticity, I am simply pointing out the lack of editing or review, and the irony of it in context of people calling out any inaccuracy. Also, that no one else noticed it, which makes me wonder if anyone bothered to read them all.Yeah that's how the site they used to dig up her tweets kinda goes though, some of the tweets come up again because of how time shifts over and such. But those are definitely all real.

Seems Stephen Totilo agrees that writers funding developers injects all sorts of conflicts of interest. Writers directly funding developers looks sketchy as hell, so it's nice to see Kotaku putting an end to that. Hopefully more outlets and writers follow suit.
She's an advocate for women's rights, and felt like women were being exploited. Making noise about it is basically her raison d'etre.
The only thing to come out of this that I'm sure everyone (or at least most) can agree is good.
Oh thanks.Re: the doxxing incident, he posted this explanation on reddit:
The comment was deleted from the thread so I can't link it directly but it's still in his comment history.
Basically, someone else tweeted a screenshot of things he wrote on his public facebook page and he considered that a dox since his name wasn't on any tfyc webpage and he's pinning it on zoe because reasons.
Really? As far as I can tell the women who contribute ideas to TYFC don't actually develop the games. They get a small portion of the profits while the rest go to charity. Seems fair. What a weird thing to be outraged about.
I have a feeling the hacker frequented 4chan (Like that narrows it down...). People who frequent the other boards love to troll the fuck out of /v/ and this was an obvious target with that stickied picture. Add the chance to rekindle the Quinnspiracy shitshow for maximum tinfoil hat drama.Yeah there's a good chance a third party is just fucking with everyone here. No real ideology behind any of it, just a thirst for drama.
Just to get this topic back on track here:
The page has even up for a few days now and is around $36,330 at the moment.
The weirdest thing about the campaign is the near radio silence around a good cause that has successfully managed to reach across the aisle. You'd think "hey, here's a campaign where you pick which of these games by women should be made" would be a hit. Sure it was surrounded by drama early on but by now enough time has passed to get some idea of who they are and what they're doing. Really wanna see where things go with the month left. The guy in charge is rather knowledgeable, insightful, and experienced with business too which is a rare trio in this messy subject.
I'm not finding it weird, unfortunately. Competing interests, honestly, and shows how much people actually care about what is being promoted here.
I think it's just how most news outlets work. Many just rather focus on the negative aspects. I remember that article on Kotaku about how there were no women presenter on Sony's stage during the ps4 reveal. Basically a call to action that Sony should change that, but nowhere was mentioned that Sony offers a scholarship exclusively for young women who want to get into the industry.exactly it conflicts with their whole narrative of women being the constant victims in gaming. I mean who wants to promote women to join the industry when several companies have said the reason we don't have diversity is not because they're not hiring women it's because rarely any try to join.
