IT COULD BE. That whole cd was badass tho. Trumps all their new stuff which is still good, but its more We are the World and less I WANT YOU BABY.

If U2 and Kajagoogoo were the only bands in the universe, then yes, it would probably be the best song ever. Maybe.

It's one of those perfect songs. One of my favorites ever. I especially like singing to it, you know, attempting to imitate Bono's singing style and voice. Can't do it.

How can you possibly compare "Seven Nation Army" to "With or Without You"? I mean, I love Seven Nation Army (great cruising song), but WoWY was just incredible; it still sounds fresh after all these years. We'll see how SNA holds up in a decade or two, I suppose. :p

As for the topic, I don't think With or Without You is the best song ever, but it's definitely somewhere in my top 10-15, and that's saying a lot. :) A couple of other U2 songs are likely in that list as well-- "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Great, great songs, all of them.

God I love that song.

I know someone who had that as their first song at their wedding. Didn't have the heart to explain the lyrics to them.

I would say so, along with the likes of "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Where The Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Desire" show why U2 are one of the finest bands ever.

The "Best Of 1980-1990" has got to be one of the greatest albums ever, despite it being a compilation.

Totally agree, hopefully 'Vertigo' will score some more points for the side but I'm keeping my expectations low and hopefully will be blown away.

90-2000 is a meh album by comparison, no doubt.

My sister asked me what she should get me for Christmas a couple of years ago, and I said "U2's Greatest Hits Album"-- little did I know that they had two different ones out; sure enough, I ended up with the 1990-2000 album. <cries>

"Mysterious Ways" and "Electrical Storm" (which I STILL can't find this radio remix of that I heard when it first aired) are the only two tracks on that album that I listen to. :p

For old U2, I think I like the "War" album best.

'Surrender' is probably my favorite song from it, but 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'New Year's Day', 'Two Hearts Beat As One' and '40' are all pretty close, all from the same album.

'Two Hearts Beat As One' and 'Drowning Man' are also great songs that never get played or show up on any greatest hits, yet are still among the best songs they've ever done.

i was just scrolling through the radio stations on my way home, and happened to tune into some rap song that went:

I love girls that are white, black, puerto rican or haitian/
i love 'em chinese, japanese or even asian

whatever the hell that song was, IT is the best song ever.

The best song ever has been proven to be "Venus" by Television.

That's my favorite Television song.

Anyway, With or Without You isn't even the best U2 song. That honor goes to Where the Streets Have No Name. Same album, though. My personal favorite U2 song is probably Sunday Bloody Sunday, though. I dunno. It's really hard to pick a favorite. Angel of Harlem is really, really good, too. And I Will Follow is also great.

Damn, I don't even like this band and I still have like 20 favorite songs.

Theres too many good U2 songs. Hard to say which is the best.

To a large extent I agree. They've so many good songs, I keep forgetting about some them, and then I hear them on the radio or whatever, and it's like "shit, another great u2 song". The only other band that's like that for me is Queen.

I take it you haven't heard 'Goldie Looking Chain's' - 'Your Mother's Got A Penis'?

My personal best song ever is likely either Lou Reed's A Perfect Day (I hate that dance remix) or something by David Bowie. . .lately I've been giving Sons of the Silent Age and Blackout a lot of repeat listens. They're super amazing songs.

Bullet The Blue Sky kicks ass.
Yes...yes it does! It kicks all sorts of ass!

Although none of these can touch God's Annointed Best Song Ever®..."Fresh Tendrils" by Soundgarden.

I agree with another poster that WAR is the best U2 album. Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Will Follow, Kite and Beautiful Day are probably my favorite U2 songs.

For greatest song ever...I'd have to go with The Cure's "Just Like Heaven"

Nah, The Day I Tried To Live is the best Soundgarden song. But Fresh Tendrils kicks ass as well, along with Superunknown. Chris Cornell is God.

With or Without You isn't even their best, that would be either Staring at the Sun, Please or Where the streets have no name.

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" rips the shit out of all other U2 songs. Except for "The Last Night On Earth" which is equally kick ass.

Well, it's my personal favorite song of all time. I am craaaazy about WoWY. I have about 40 different versions of it on my computer, and I once made a mix CD of nothing but different versions of WoWY. When I sing it at karaoke I always add the "secret" verses only performed live. I am a With or Without You fanboy!

Staring at the sun is most obviously the best U2 song ever. Still FAR away from the best song ever though.

Doesn't really exist, every situation asks for different things.

Oh yeah, 4th of July > * (Superunknown only -- great fucking album. One of the best)

I love how there's an underlying Soundgarden discussion going on. Yea, I really can't pick one favorite song on Superunknown, whatever song I'm listening to at that moment is my favorite song. Although on Badmotorfinger, it's undoubtably Jesus Christ Pose.

But there is no "greatest song ever." There is definitely a top-tier of timeless songs, and WoWY is one of them.
