Ugliest games

Psychonauts. The art style is abhorrent and makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
Gahhhhhh :(

The Wonderful 101 also makes me shudder. I hate superhero themes to begin with (so I'm very biased, I admit) and its garish colour scheme looks tacky as hell. Despite not being a fan I didn't mind it so much in Viewtiful Joe, but I really hate it here.

An unpopular opinion, but I also really dislike how Fez looks. I can't stand the colour scheme. I think it's the mix of purple and bright greens that puts me off. Still, it's not as offensively ugly as some of the gems posted so far, I'll admit.

I mean.... even naming Fez feels wrong compared to this:

I think few things beats that 3D Simon the Sorcerer in pure visual ugliness. Yikes. xD How does one even begin to produce such ugliness? You'd have to try very hard, I think. Especially when the older games looked perfectly fine.

Battleborn has one of the most atrocious art styles in gaming. Look at that shit.

Just, look at it.
battleborn_060.jpg
Yeah, that is really bad. And apparently the game doesn't run very well? You'd think going for a low level of details in geometry, effects, etc. would be to have better performance at least. But the art style makes my eyes bleed.

Weird because the visuals of Borderlands are really, really good and the cartoony style ages gracefully too. But then again they did plagiarize the art style from someone else... guess they couldn't do that again. >_<

Waiting for "The Last of Us" or a ridiculous over the top post in usual GAF fashion.
Here you go:

Bloodborne and Street Fighter V. Utterly horrible to look at.
Demon's and the 1st Dark Souls both look like butt, too, imo.
Dark Souls 3.

Welp.

Bloodborne, MK8, SFV, and GTAV were all mentioned.
GTA V wasn't mentioned for its aesthetics though, but the others presumably were.

Demon's Souls

(Quite hilariously I found these in an old Gamespot forum thread titled "Demons Souls (PS3) = better graphics than any 360 game to date")

Looks like a perfectly fine-looking PS3 game from 2009.

GTA V is a truly ugly game. The satire is of the lowest, more surface and juvenile quality and the misanthropic pervasive misogyny and stereotyping isn't clever. As GS said in their review, the game is "politically muddled and profoundly misogynistic." It's telling that gamers were so offended by this review that a petition was made to request the reviewer be fired. Blegh. The game is the definition of hateful fiction.

My later replies to avoid confusion:

It really gets tiring when people wake up in the morning and say to themselves "today I'm going to derail a thread with my own personal agenda."

As for the actual topic Virtual Hydlide is really hard to top, LOL. That game is....remarkable.

Art Style will always out-age graphical fidelity.

It's the reason Final Fantasy 7 is still playable despite the character models looking like a joke.

Dark Souls 2 will age worse than DS1/DeS in 10 years. Mark my words. The rebuilt engine they used for that game and awful textures look terrible. The lighting engine puts this sickly glow on everything too.

The same engine was reused for bloodborne and dark souls 3 apparently.

Both EQ2 and Vanguard looked really hideous. What's especially ironic is how people were going on about how these games looked so much better than WoW at the time, because they weren't using stylized kiddy cartoon graphics.

i remember people saying this. 'it looks like CGI!' from about 1993, as though that was admirable.

You should've posted this in that thread about unpopular opinions but I'm gonna tell you a secret: I agree with you. I don't like GTA games for the very same reasons you've exposed in this thread.

Brutal Legend, and basically all the shit that double fine puts out. The art direction is a joke.

Do what now?

I think he means Prey:

I thought he could have been talking about something older, like PO'ed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iyfiaLP55U

Which had weird anus monsters that would fart at you.

Oh yeah, Duke Nukem Forever.

But seriously, Duke Nukem Forever. By the time it finally released the graphics were easily a couple years behind, and wouldn't have looked all that great then either.

Not quite. This Is what I was talking about. Immoral Cumbat nsfw

I clarified this, it's not an agenda, it's simply my opinion and what first came to mind when I read the title. Please read my edited post, I did clarify where I was coming from and that I didn't expect to derail the thread. My apologies that it did so, sincerely.

Are you guys being serious? All 3 Spyro PS1 games used the same engine and aesthetics. If you really think thats some of the "ugliest are direction my eyes have had the displeasure of seeing", you really need to play more games.

Also, I can't even tell if I'm being messed with here.

It's the first time I've seen anyone say any of the first three Spyro games were ugly. I always thought they were among the best looking games available on the PS1.

Hello guys, this is my first post so it's great to meet all of you!

My contribution to this would be Cybermorph for the Atari Jaguar

Hi, glad to have you here.

It's weird, I don't actually remember playing anything 3D 3D for the Jaguar, so I can't actually tell if this one is ugly for the time or not, but your post did inspire me that Red Alarm for the Virtual Boy is one of the least comprehensible games I've ever played:

Wireframe environments and models and only one colour? Yikes!

I don't remember that flaming lava boss thing in Bloodborne. Also, if you're sensitive to chromatic aberration, the game may be an eyesore.

Eternal Darkness

I won't post pics cus I'm on mobile, but it looks terrible.

I think it's mainly the character/enemy models and N64-esque CG cutscenes that look terrible. They're incredibly blocky and low quality by the standard of other Gamecube games, especially when you consider the release of this game wasn't that far removed from REmake which just blows it away in every conceivable way. But Eternal Darkness still has some pretty good environmental design in places.

I've beaten the game and I don't remember it ever looking that good or as smooth. Are those pre release gifs?
They're both from trailers. The first gif appears to have some manner of filter on it, the lighting in that one isn't really indicative of what the game actually looks like. The second gif is a good representation of the actual game though.

I disagree. Those murals in the pics you posted look basic and amateurish in game.
Fair enough, we'll agree to disagree.

I give you the most disappointing experience of my childhood especially after seeing the vibrant colors and great sound from the arcade version of 2

For it's time period.

Dark Souls 3.

I ventured into screenshot of it and boy...that game can look awful a lot.

Quite a few of the games in the thread looked great for their time.

I'm playing on PC so that may affect my opinion, but seeing how consistently gorgeous the game can look, while running at 60fps, has had me constantly flabbergasted. It's ridiculously detailed and visually dense.

I believe you that it was a nightmare to play, but visually I think that looks really rad.

I absolutely must play Escape from Bug Island.

That's been my biggest take away from this thread as well. It looks kind of horrifying.

Demon's Souls

The biggest blight on all of those is really just the aliasing, but otherwise those all look great, especially for the time.
