Ugliest games

Battleborn has one of the most atrocious art styles in gaming. Look at that shit.

Just, look at it.

Holy shit the PS4 version looks that bad?!? I've downloaded it but not tried it yet.

I don't wanna start the whole "PC > Console" crap but the PC version looks pretty decent to my eyes.

Alpha Protocol always comes to mind as a pretty ugly game but the mechanics trump the ugliness for me.

Ugly games are kind of my fetish, hate playing them but looking at screens and video of them is kind of entertaining.

I think Oblivion had really horrible character design, (unfortunately) I didn't play it because of this:

I'm playing on PC so that may affect my opinion, but seeing how consistently gorgeous the game can look, while running at 60fps, has had me constantly flabbergasted. It's ridiculously detailed and visually dense.

Just going by the screenshot of characters and environments I've seen. Maybe they're X1/PS4 shots, but the texture resolution and characters look like low quality blurry messes.
The only impressive shots I've seen were wide open shots or shots with DOF. Anything close up looked last gen.

Seriously, i don't want to back seat mod here but, all you guys posting games like gears of war or demon souls here are either out of your minds or you just do it for the attention. It's pretty annoying.

Escape From Bug Island is a pretty dang hideous game, and its a chore to play thanks to awkward controls and tedious game design. I can't believe I actually finished that POS.

the Wii hosted a wide variety of low budget, pretty dang crappy games that were an eyesore. Such as Spy Games: Elevator Mission (yes, this is from 2008)

or the unfortunate home version of Jambo Safari on the Wii

or most of the dozens of low-budget rail shooters that populated the Wii, such as, I dunno, Remington Super Slam Hunting Alaska.

That's been my biggest take away from this thread as well. It looks kind of horrifying.

A perfect setting and I think it has great creature design. According to the wiki it should run flawlessly on Dolphin. So 4K bug island it is ...

Deadly Premonition comes to mind as a game that's very enjoyable but also disgusting to look at. York and Naomi Watts had alright character models but everything else looked like it was sculped from low res vomit. But I guess the crude graphics added to the weird charm somehow.

I liked the game somewhat but my god... Like 99 percent of the character's are so ugly and just look... Off for lack of a better word.. I wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way...

and overall imo

Yeah, I actually loved Twilight Princess, thought it was a great entry in the series. But its character designs are not the reason why. Except for a few like Midna, they're all hideous. The more realistic shading/texturing style of the game really does not blend well with the cartoony proportions of the characters, IMO. The villagers in Ordon Village are all the worst of the bunch.

I think Telma was the only "minor" character I really liked the design of in that game.

Twilight Princess had an intentionally bizarre character design style that was consistent with some other Zeldas but now translated into a slightly more realistic style. I actually end up liking (but not loving) a lot of the characters, but there are definitely a good number of characters (mostly found in Ordon Village) whose faces look misshapen in an unpleasing way to me. Overall, I'm probably 70% positive about the designs.

1000% agree. I'm re-playing the HD version of this game now. Hot fricken damn. Every single character is so UGLY!!! Even worse than the faces from Xenoblade Chronicles X (awesome game). It's almost like they purposefully chose to make ugly characters.

I mean how the hell did somebody make this and think "Yeah, this character design looks good."

I think it's mainly the character/enemy models and N64-esque CG cutscenes that look terrible. They're incredibly blocky and low quality by the standard of other Gamecube games, especially when you consider the release of this game wasn't that far removed from REmake which just blows it away in every conceivable way. But Eternal Darkness still has some pretty good environmental design in places.

REmake only has models of that quality because it doesn't have to render environments. Eternal Darkness could have looked like that if it went with prerendered backgrounds, but being able to move the camera was correctly more important to SK. I find REmake to be really static and unappealing, and I remain surprised that it's brought up so often as an example of good graphics. The stationary camera and the lack of interaction between the characters and the environments stand out like a sore thumb among everything else in its era. It feels primitive.

Has Miyamoto or anyone else from Nintendo ever gone on record with any kind of explanation as to why all the secondary characters in the Zelda games went so fucking weird looking starting with Ocarina? The 3D Zeldas, with the exception of Wind Waker, seem to take place in nightmare worlds in which only Link and Zelda aren't terrifying mutants.

Keep in mind it was originally an N64 game that they re-did, and also, comparing a small Canadian company to Capcom and comparing a full 3D game to a game with pre-rendered backgrounds and expecting similar visuals is really unfair. :P I thought ED looked fine for the time. Very atmospheric game.

Drawn to Death. Saw it and hated it instantly. Ugh!
Street Figther IV. Very displeasing to the eyes.
Nightmare Creatures on PSX. Bad

Haha loving this thread but I'm particularly amused by the safari game where apparently part of the game is to take pictures.... Hideous, hideous pictures. rofl.

.

Idk, the PS4 version looks like crap and the PC version just looks like crap with smoother lines.

World of Warcraft .

Yes , these are 2015 screens . Massive spikes , flat colors , green text . One of the reason I stay away from it despite having friends that are totally hooked .

I don't know either someone's graphics card sucks and they can't turn the quality up too far, and the second image seems to be a bit streached.....and also from a website >.>

If there was ever a game that screamed "misplaced obsession with anime" it would probably be this. In terms of visual effects it looked very good for its era, but in terms of literally everything else it foul looking.

Sudeki
Speaking of misplaced obsession with anime, Microsoft tried to make a JRPG once. They never tried again. Technically you can really blame Climax Studios for this, since Microsoft only published, but still. I don't think either company tried something like this a second time.

FUEL
I know what you're thinking: this doesn't look all that ugly, what gives? And fair enough, these screenshots are not especially ugly. But here's the deal: FUEL once held the world record for the largest world in a video game, measuring at more than 5,500 square miles. To get a world that size, they had to make some compromises. I'd wager that out of those 5,500 square miles, a good 80% look like the above screenshots. Just, thousands of miles of the same boring, uninteresting plains and burned out post apocalyptic forests with zero landmarks to make anything feel unique. You see that crashed jet? There's hundreds of identical clones scattered around the world.

I love the game but MDK was really ugly, even back im the day.

mdk-playstation-ps1-004.jpg

MDK is gorgeous, man. The art direction is amazing! Especially the glass levels, damn those are some of the prettiest environments ever.

Kingpin though...
Kingpin_PC_01.jpg

Ugly as a sin and all the textures are undulating all the time which looks like every one is made out of jelly
