UK: Charlie Brooker to host "How Video Games Changed The World" 2hr show on Channel 4

Now they're going to show Indie Game The Movie right after this, which is pretty cool to put on TV even if everyone here has already seen that.

I know it is in chronological order.
The point was what you even include in the list.
Might as well go 'LIFE IS A GAME' for 1 and be done with it
Hell, the fact that something like that would be mentioned would probably mean that MGS2 would be among the influential titles. It's just a shame that it (or the other games) didn't get even a mention on the show.

...They basically hijacked the one amazing opportunity to finally have a TV show that said "hey, here's video games, here's why you should give a shit" to make a metaphorical commentary on social media.

Don't get me wrong: it's a brilliant metaphor, but wrong place, wrong time, guys.

Indie game is very interesting to watch how incredibly different each developer is.

Blow is super relaxed and aloft, team meat is depressing and somewhat crazy and well Phil fish is Phil fish

Interesting list and choices, my only question is which is the best platform to play this twitter game he was talking about?

Gameswipe was better, but this was a pretty good show overall.

Although it should have been called A Beginners Guide to the History of Videogames.

I only caught the last 15 minutes but listening to Robocop's theme tune in the ending credits made me eager to watch the repeat.

The comments here are dire. This wasn't a 'best games' list. This was a chronological list of games that fit the narrative the show wanted to express.

Number 1 doesn't mean it's the best 'game'. It means it fits the narrative. What it's saying is that gamification of the internet is now a big thing.

Heh, they clearly were pushing the narrative of "video games have gone from silly entertainment in a screen to influence real life", that's why the #1 was something recognizable as Twitter. They wanted to be smart and say "see? video games are all over us and you didn't even know!"

Except the connection between Twitter and "game" is faint at best. It's a "game" in the same way we could say life (the competition to get a job, to get a couple, to success at life) is a game. Or even less connection.

Full list for anyone who missed most of it?

Best not to treat it as an IGN-esque "best-of" clickathon.

It was more of a documentary from Pong onwards. Channel4 do love their "Top X" shows so this was probably the only way they could get it commissioned.

Maturity, bitches.
Yup. Were any RPGs talked about? I guess the problem would be what you'd pick. Fallout is a bit too niche, and the problem with Final Fantasy or the Elder Scrolls would be which one you'd pick.
Also Britain wasn't really into JRPGs for years so the "big two", Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, only had their impact with the 8th and 7th iterations of their series respectively.

I guessed Last of Us would be on it given they had the Naughty Dog guy on earlier. Though given the nature of this list it's probably a bit premature to gauge it's influence yet.

How many people are misunderstanding this whole show and the list? The games on the list aren't necessarily games that have 'changed the world', they are games that allowed Charlie to narrate how games are changing the world. The Last of Us was a good point to talk about emotional storytelling, at the right chronological point, where he couldn't fit it in before.

the reaction in this thread to the last 'game', was so predictable, lmao

Where was God of War for impacting us with QTEs?

Where was FFVII for making FMVs popular?

Might as well ask where the extra minutes needed to cover some extra material were

Is that right?

Well, if Twitter's a game, I'm about to make it Dark Souls levels of hard.

something something, proving Brooker's point about gamers being overly defensive.

Full list for anyone who missed most of it?

just watch it when you hvae time, really. cutting it down a simple list really does this program a disservice
