UK Retailer GAME is dead | Brera's Lament

Upper level GAME in the Trafford Centre has now shut. I thought one of them would go. At least it can have all it's stock easily moved to the one downstairs.

This is brutal.

More news trickling in from sources. Apparently the company has got enough assets to pay off the banks which means if they liquidate the company the banks will get paid. It is now a realistic proposition for GMG to be fully liquidated.

I preferred the upper floor shop. It's a lot more spacious. The staff were nicer too.

Just got back from work today, thankfully our store was one that survived but there have been a lot of casualties in the region. Obviously it doesn't count for much what with the big shadow still looming overhead.

My deepest condolences to checkeredknight and all the other guys who had their stores close, everyone has been fighting as hard as possible to keep going and the company has no doubt lost a number of talented staff today.

No sign of my local Gamestation being shut as of yet (Peterlee), hope it stays open as when I do pop in on the odd occasion the staff are really friendly and nice to have a chat with about games and stuff. There's no GAME in the town either, although they do have competition from a Grainger Games and ofc ASDA.

GAME in Winchester was closed today. Had a handwritten sign on a piece of A4 paper. Classy.

To be fair if I lost my job today the last thing I would do is start typing a formal document. Obviously they had no formal document sent to them from head office via email. It was just, close the doors and go home.

I'd do the same.

I'd do a nice typewritten one, with the obvious inclusion of "This is all due to the upper management, who are a bunch of utter cunts".

might as well go out with some dignity

But you need to be a subscriber. Anyone?

MCV are probably your best bet for a store closure list. A lot of people (including myself) are tweeting the editors to let them know which stores are closed.

I also got an editor of the local telegraph replying to my tweet (bizarre.) She reckons there will be an article in the paper tomorrow on a possible take-over of GameStation. We've shut love and we're losing our jobs. What does she know that we don't?

My heartfelt apologies to those who have lost their jobs, and best of luck to you getting back into work.

I still find it ridiculous that in my area the stores acquired through the EB and Gamestation deals both remained open all these years, despite that meaning 3 stores within a minute or two's walk of each other. Not at all surprised things have gone this way with similar stories around the country.

It will be interesting to see if any new player enters the market, after the assets are sold separately or otherwise.

Long Eaton gamestation gone eh?

Wonder what'll replace 'em.

Who am i kidding? It'll be another charity shop. lol.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Parfitt's posting of rumours and murmurs on MCV which was once more of a srs bizness publication than the usual games journalism riff raff it seems to have become has really seeped into other traditional avenues and being taken with more weight that they should be.

I don't know if anyone's already reported this, but the GAME in Clayton Square, Liverpool closed "forever" (according to the notice they put outside the store) today at around 2pm.

I met one of the blokes who worked there as he was shuttering the place. I said it was a shame about what happened, and wished him good luck on his travails. Poor guy looked resigned to it; I guess he'd had a chance to go through all five stages of the Grief Cycle into Acceptance.

I didn't check the GAME in Liverpool ONE (edit: confirmed closed in the list provided by zomg) or the Gamestation in St. Johns, but the Gamestation in Lord Street was still fully open today, business as usual. Can't say for how long, though.

As said many times before, the best of wishes to all those adversely affected by these events.

Pleasantly surprised that the two closest to me, Workington and Carlisle, are still open. I was expecting either Game or Gamestation in Carlisle to close but so far they seem to be hanging on.

Shopto are offering £3 credit on your next order if you send in your GAME card to them (new customers only)

So only one of the stores in Plymouth has shut down, eh? That's the big one, and it hasn't had much traffic since the other one opened up in the mall.

Yep, you're spot on. I tweeted her back more or less saying "Well, we're shut as on 1PM today. I have no idea what you have read" and she replied saying "Sorry, I saw the news about 30 minutes after you tweeted. Sad to hear." I guess they were just going to report on rumours again. That's news!

I've made a little search thing for the list: http://isgamedeadyet.com/stores/

Sad to see us on this list, but nice job. Very handy.

So just Gamestation stores left in Liverpool? Wasn't expecting that!

It looks like the GAME nearest to me closed, but the Gamestation less than 200 meters away is still open. Not that anyone deserves to lose their jobs, but that sucks since the GAME staff tended to be a lot easier to deal with.

But really, the company had far too much retail space than they ever would have required. They should have closed the redundant shops years ago.

As has been said multiple times on this page, a sale is unlikely to occur unless it becomes absolutely necessary to totally liquidate.

Even during liquidation I would be surprised if there was a massive sale, the administrator would do much better closing all of the stores and selling the stock in bulk lots to CEX or other competitors.

Wow, looks like they've closed BOTH Sheffield Town Centre stores and two of the Meadowhell ones (probably one GAME and the Gamestation). Well done, administrators. Now you have barely ANY presence in Sheffield. Ah well, got the better Playtime games anyway. (Seriously, fuck Meadowhell with a rusty pipe covered in rustier nails, hate that place...)

Sad news for the employees, however...

Any word on a big sale to clear stock?

We were told there was plans to re-open again for the rest of the week and have a big "closing down" sale. However, we were also told to act like nothing bad was happening? It was all a bit of a mess... then just before we left, we were told to scrap the sale. Use the rest of the week to box everything up and prepare it for being sent back.

I would make sure that you are clear they will pay you for your time upfront, cash if necessary. Remember that from the day of administration (12pm today) the administrator has no obligation to pay staff for hours accrued post-administration.

Reportedly there is going to be a sit-in at my local Game. Staff unhappy with the redundancy arrangements I think, manager has been there 17 years.

Sad stuff.

They aren't going to get anywhere. The police will come and clear them out on instruction from the leaseholder, PwC.

Looking at that list of closed stores makes me feel pretty sad.

Incredible to see that the only one closed in Stockport is the Comet concession. The GAME and Gamestation which are next door to each other live to fight another day! Godspeed.

Eventually, but it's become de rigeur almost for retail sit-ins here. There were ones when La Senza closed for example, there's been an ongoing, long one at a non-retail business called Vita Cortex. Not sure what happened in the case of La Senza...kind of fizzled out I think.

Quite a few of the La Senza locations got saved.

You shouldn't bother going in IMO, chances are you won't get paid for those hours, and I'm sure the other staff who were laid off will consider not going in too
