I think it's safe to say that this is going to get nothing but praise. I just know it. It's the last Uncharted, you can be damn sure ND made something special here.

I can see this being a 77/100 game. I can't imagine it getting more than mid 80s.

I think we are starting to move past this genre of game in general.

You sure you ain't confusing this with Quantum Break? Like no offence to that game, I'm sure it's great, but it just happens to have that MC score and is a 3rd person, story driven shooter.

But there's still a lot of difference between the two games. So I don't think what you're saying is entirely true.

Give some examples
I think it's important to make distinct discrepancy when talking about "genre" in video games.

in terms of the type of game. it's a 3rd person shooter, mostly. with a lil puzzle and platforming mixed in.

in terms of the type of entertainment. it's an action adventure.

I'm expecting Game of the Year material. Along with Gears of War 4, it's my most anticipated game this year and I'm itching for a more linear experience.

The beta played like a dream so I have high hopes.

I'm willing to bet "linear" is playing into his definition of genre more than anything.

Gear of War 4 singleplayer gameplay has me interested and the game informer info sounded great, but I just wish that they had better writers. That's by far the series biggest flaw. It's like day and night between Gears and Uncharted/TLoU writing/dialogue lol.

94-95 metacritic and a lot of hyperbolic statements like "definitive game of the last 100 years".

This gen has been crying out for a huge blockbuster and I think this won't disappoint.

eh? maybe that's what he was talking about but linear isn't an adjective that describes the genre. that's talking about a game's structure, irrespective of the type of game it is. you know what i'm sayin?

Yeah but he wasn't talking about 3rd person shooters or action adventure games dying out because that's like 90% of games that come out

Maybe multiplayer wise but I haven't seen nor read anything particularly amazing about single player. Though that could be bias since I've never liked Gears that much besides multiplayer.

Will be interesting to see if Uncharted 4 can score as high as The Last of Us. I expect this to do really well but 95 Metacritic is a tall order.

I've enjoyed the characters and worlds in both games for totally different reasons. Yes, Gears isn't Shakespeare but I've grown to love those characters over the years every bit as much as the cast of Uncharted.

I expect stronger writing in Gears of War 4 with a lot more depth. Not anything approaching TLoU, because they've said they're not aiming for that, but an improvement.

But anyway, I suppose that's a conversation for another day. :)

My biggest worry with UC is how the more open areas will impact the pacing. It didn't help Rise of the Tomb Raider (not that I expect that much emphasis on freedom).

To be fair, we've not seen a single second of SP gameplay (the E3 showing was an early tease and is not in the game) so hopefully upcoming showings can convince you it's worth you're time.

No, I agree. Gears 4 hasn't shown anything SP wise to be excited about yet. The demo they showed off wasn't interesting at all to me. And this is coming from someone who didn't even touch multiplayer and played the Gears games for their campaigns.

linear games dying out then? of course not. that's like saying single player games are dying out.

I'm not saying I agree with him lol I'm just saying that with open world being a big trend that people often linear games are dying out or don't review well. But action adventure is a far broader design umbrella than linear, you never hear anyone say "action adventure games are dying out!"

Yeah depending on how much we see, I think this will all depend on the player. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to avoid unnecessary combat or engage at first but then lose the enemy. Pacing will only be as issue if ND makes it so that every counter ends up being long and drawn out. Both the first uncharted 4 gameplay demo and Africa demo we saw seems to indicate that you can get through that part quickly if you want or stay there and play around, disposing of enemies.

Ever since Uncharted began, Naughty Dog hasn't made one bad game. The three Uncharted games were great and TLOU was fantastic. Judging on what we've seen of the game so far this is going to set new graphical standards for console gaming I think and i expect the gameplay to be loads of fun.

My poor effort.

Haha. That's a good effort.

I'm expecting high scores, but I haven't even entertained the idea of this scoring higher than TLoU. I just can't see that happening.
I'd love to be proven wrong though.

I don't think it'll score higher than TLoU, but I don't necessarily think that means it won't be a better game. As people rightfully point out, standards change and reviews reflect that.

I agree with this. There's also the "been there, done that" factor, what with this being the 4th (5th lol) game in the series with Last of Us being fresh. Reviewers like to throw out the concept of execution over novelty all to often IMO.

lol what? 77? I'll just assume you're joking because if not, that's the worst prediction I've ever seen.

I think Uncharted 4 will be in the 93-97 range.

Rise of the Tomb Raider averaged an 86, and I thought it deserved a few points less than that.

.

yeah that's what we're saying here now, agreeing and disagreeing with him and i disagree with him too. i think linear games are here to stay in the industry just as much as open world games. just like single player games are here to stay just as much as multiplayer games, even though multiplayer games are what we hear about more often these days.

How did Ratchet and Clank get an 86 on metacritic then?

It's also one thing to say that the game might score a little lower due to the industry not being as universally on board with linear games...like perhaps 87-92 MC instead of 93-96. But predicting a 77 MC like the other poster did is just plain stupid. Naughty Dog is one of the best developers in the world. Uncharted 4 is not getting below 80...very unlikely below 85.

Why do people think critics are applying more scrutiny this Generation? I've never heard this standpoint before and quite curious to understand this.

I think it's more like there's less they haven't seen or been impressed by this time around.

Last gen was the birth of some really magical open world games, online multiplayer games, etc as the technology and hardware finally came together to allow these experiences (yes you had that sort of on Xbox and PS2, but Red Dead Redemption's open western world and games like Warhawk were unheard of multiplayer concepts for consoles).

This gen, with the even longer dev cycles, we haven't seen anything truly groundbreaking yet that feels next gen in the sense that it was impossible last gen.

I think with the new large install base of the PS4 and the high marketing efforts and the word of mouth from good reviews, this may be ND's best-selling game yet. I think it's going to break expectations.

I think it'll score somewhere in the midst of 8 space bucks.

I definitely want some more linear shooty games. Quantum Break was fantastic and a breath of fresh air after some of the open world stuff I was playing.

Id bet it lands well above 90, but theres an outside chance it gets a low 80 if Druckmann tries to Last of Us up the story and kill Drake or something lol.

I hope Gerstmann is reviewing.

Me too -- it should be a good litmus test to see if it can differentiate itself from other third person shooters like The Order and Quantum Break that have failed to break the mold in any way, instead falling into several hyperlinear trappings.

He gave both 2/5, so it would be interesting to see his opinion on how Uncharted 4 compares.

Heh. That would be amusing (not in a good way... I love the series and don't want it to get fucked up) due to how completely out of character it would be for the series. Come to think of it, ME3's original ultra-vague ending was so horrible largely because it was utterly out of character for the series as well.

I've been saying this again and again because I really believe it: Uncharted 4 is going to be sony's Halo 3.

alright but what sort of source or trend is being referenced to insist the idea that linear games are a dying kind?

I dunno who to believe now. The GOTY Edition box art reviews make it sound better than a 77/100 game.
