Undertale |OT| Indie RPG with determination and spider bake sales

I finally finished Undertale tonight, and was completely delighted/blown away by the whole experience. (Undertale and SOMA in the space of a fortnight is a bit of a mind-fuck.) I had high expectations, and they were exceeded. I laughed, I teared up, I swore a lot.

I didn't know about the different types of runs when I started, but I'd been doing what turned out to be a pacifist run, and I really loved it. The experience was an exercise in pure stubbornness and Bisickle hoarding (is that how you spell the bloody thing?), as bullet hell has never been my forte. I could never get over the fact that each boss fight would exceed the last with both creativity and incredible music. I know there isn't an excess of bosses, but they still ended up being some of the most memorable encounters in gaming for me. I'd often be laughing out loud - or swearing out loud - as I madly mashed the keyboard. Mostly all three at once, embarrassingly.

I spent aaaaaaaaages on Undyne's boss fight before realising I could flee. I'd died to her so much I'd forgotten what her 'check' description had been. Cue more swearing.
I can't wait to see all the different kinds of speed runs this game will produce, especially with a pacifist run.

I know that the music is absolute perfection as is, but oh, man, imagine some of these pieces being played by a full orchestra, or a big jazz band. I think it's one of my favourite soundtracks ever. Trying to memorise
a certain melody for a puzzle became so much more poignant when it reappears later.

It's weird, as big a mind fuck as Flowey's giant not-so-sexy Poison Ivy form was, the most horrifying moment for me was in the True Lab 'watching' the videos on the terminal. Wait, what did I do...? They know me? Who am I? (Of course, filling in the genocide blanks later via TvTropes was horrifying - poor, poor Asriel.)

I don't want to do any more play throughs, because I feel like it was such a unique experience that I'm happy to leave it as is.
Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once, everybody lives! That being said, I know I'm still being exceedingly hypocritical anyway by greedily reading all genocide spoilers. It's like getting a horrifying reward while keeping your hands clean. Others do the dirty work, and my save stays nice and Fallen Child free. I also know by not continuing on there's so much of the game missed, and so many alternate boss battles no fought. (Holy shit, Sans!) I haven't watched any videos, though, so if I do ever decide to do a different run through, it'll still be fresh. The whole experience is fascinating. I'll have to think about it for awhile.

...Papyrus may be muscling in on that skeleton shaped hole in my heart that has been previously reserved for Manny Calavera. This alarms me.

Holy shit the song when you fight
Sans
on the genocide run is awesome, what's it called?

Also I can't tell if
the game crashing was on purpose
lol. Awesome stuff!

Thanks!

But.. Geez,
Sans
. Sorry, but I have to kill you.

It's not the worst a game has made me feel, but it is making me feel pretty shitty.

e: Genocide run done! Dark stuff, really liked it though. Aside from the
secret lab stuff
, pacifist run was actually pretty boring compared to neutral and genocide.

All in all an awesome game, maybe not GOTY material for me, but very, very good.

Genocide Run:
So considering some people have been wondering about what Sans exactly is considering he bleeds when you kill him, there's been a lot of discussions going around if he's actually half-human of some sort or if it's just the ketchup he drinks.

tumblr_nvz9bfI4ZA1r323ato3_250.gif

Turns out the Kickstarter Pledge info video from 2013 settles that confusion, and the more I am amused now that you are literally just cutting ketchup out of Sans when you attack him in the Go Hog Wild Run.

I looooooove to death that

Yes. Killing the dummy invalidates Pacifist.

Err ? Really ?

The dummy at the beginning is the only thing i have ever killed in my pacifist run and it didn't seems to influence anything

No, I killed the dummy in my true pacifist run and everything was fine.

Remember guys, you can't actually "kill" dummies under normal circumstances, they're ghosts possesing the dummies, (Go hog wild spoiler)
you can only kill mad dummy on genocide because his anger makes him incarnate as a dummy, in neutral and pacifist you can't actually "kill" the dummy and it's implied even if you smash toriel's dummy, you can't actually hurt the ghost inside).

Speaking of ghosts!

All Runs spoilers

So im replaying the game to go for all the stuff i missed and i got the chance to uncover Mettaton's full backstory and... holy shit, Mettaton is a back stabbing, egotistical, greedy piece of shit, it's incredible how awful he is to Alphys during the core part of the story when you take in account everything Alphys has done for him and the way he ditched Blooky and Shyren is such a dick move, Blooky doesn't even know where his cousin went until the end of the game and...fuck Mettaton and how he basically makes people close to him miserable.

Also, im too dumb and naive, i finally understand why people said Alphys kills herself in all the neutral endings, called Undyne on the garbage bit of the waterfall, holy shit, Alphys would have killed herself if it wasn't for Undyne, she truly was suicidal!!

RIP, Shyren's sister.

Now that some guy all by himself has produced the greatest JRPG or all time, is there actually any need for Japan to continue producing videogames?

It's just an RPG. It's not even similar to any JRPGs, weird how so many people think it is

Swery playing Undertale is one of my favorite things this year.

My favorite "Japanese video game developer playing Undertale" is moa, the creator of Hatoful Boyfriend.

Well, (True Pacifist spoilers)
at least Mettaton seems to realize this at the end of the game. And Shyren does get her sister back as part of one of Alphys's monstrosities.

This is true, and he makes good on his word in the end by performing with Blooky and Shyren and even giving a little role to Burgerpants, but still i think he did a lot of bad stuff (defacing the Asriel memorial is kind of a big deal too), tho i do admit, i felt for him when he nearly breaks down when he realizes the first caller at the end of his battle is Blooky.

Hahaha, this was pretty much my experience, down to a T (including looking up the spoilers bit). I'm pretty interested to see what kind of games Undertale will have inspired a couple years down the line!

On another note, usually I should be so sorry about linking to this tumblr on neogaf, but here's some cute pieces of fanart. (hidden boss spoilers)
It's a shame he got harassed over backing Undertale. :/

This is going to come off kinda...like I'm a big asshole (which is probably the truth!) but I think after watching a couple streamers and Tubers playing this and mash through dialogue and get angry at not figuring out shit and getting a neutral multiple kill ending or saying they don't get something or that something is random or that it doesn't make sense...

...I think I really REALLY love the design of the game. That if you play through this game the way a lot of people play games, just rushing through text and not paying attention and playing it like you're "supposed" to play games then the game places you down the unfulfilling and generally less impactful routes, ones specifically designed to be unsatisfying or emotionally confrontational to the player. And as a result you'll find the game not as great as other people and leave it unsatisfied or disappointed or not find all the wonderful things in this game. I keep seeing people having difficulty with bosses and not understand how to do the fight because they just mash and don't read the dialogue or check the enemy or see if anything changed when they do an action. A pretty big streamer was playing it and shitting on it the whole way and shit-talking to his viewers while he moved through dialogue and then raged at a battle that he called stupid when the boss was literally telling him how to beat him. The number of people I have seen wonder why the battle wasn't over when an enemy's name turned yellow and kept doing actions and get angrier and angrier is enormous. And this was well into Waterfall for a lot of people (there's a Youtuber that is particularly infuriating to watch).

I'm not saying there's a "right" way to play the game as ALL ROUTE SPOILERS
I actually believe that fucking up your first game and realizing you need to do pacifist and then experimenting to do genocide is probably the best emotional route you can take in the game
but seeing so many people play the game in an antagonistic and closed way deriving no enjoyment from it makes me appreciate the design of this game.

Reminds me of back when I used to watch Game Grumps. They'd mash theough dialogue while talking and then usually complain about not knowing what to do. That was how they made Sonic '06 into a tediously long series. The game may be broken but they made it out to be way harder than it actually is.

Amusingly enough, the Game Grumps playthrough of Undertale is one of the best ones. They're loving it and reading everything. Probably cause it's Ross and Barry and not Arin.

I don't know if I wanna draw attention to shitty players to have a good ole round table of crapping on them (cathartic though it may be). I'd rather point out people like this girl I watched two nights ago who was so into it that when she figured out it was
Toriel
sans was talking to behind the door, she fucking exploded into tears and hiccuped her way through the rest of the text. Or this girl from last night who identified herself as being a lesbian and bawled her eyes out at the
RG01+02
fight as well as the
Undyne/Alphys
date sequence just because they were both so positive and well done. There was also a dude who lost his shit when he could
save his friends in the last fight
and a girl who made ME cry from being so happy
seeing the cut scenes of Asriel discovering Chara and realizing you could save him and seeing his name.

I love watching other people play this game because seeing them become so invested in it is really special.

Dodger's playthrough of it is one of the best I've seen so far. She really gets into the game, the story and the characters (whom she all voice acts), and figures out quite a bunch of stuff plot-wise. You can find it on her Twitch VODs (though she also said she'd put it on YouTube at some point).

Started this on a whim yesterday and played all the way through to the true ending in one sitting. I don't think I've been as profoundly moved by anything as I was by the last 10-20 minutes in a long time.

When
Asriel finally shows up (with rainbows and stars)
she freaks out for what feels like a full minute. It's glorious to watch.

This Let's Play is also pretty nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K007dTYLsko . He does pretty good voices.

All these metal covers are so, so good.

I need one for Save the World though.

well this one is already metal enough, a cover would be cool, but it's not the most interessting

personally i want
asgore battle, spider dance and battle with a true hero

i would love to hear more piano or violin cover, or an electro swing cover of "Dummy!"

Just got done with
Papyrus' disco floor puzzle
explanation. Got an honest laugh out of me on that part. What a great couple of characters he and his brother are.

Just finished the demo even though I'd already bought the game a week after starting it and hearing such good things about the game. Can't help feel like I definitely shouldn't have played the demo in small bursts, and unfortunately I knew a little too much about the
importance of pacifism and non pacifism to not expect the tug on the heart strings
at the end (of the demo).

I really do like the game based off the demo, just disappointed I
didn't feel more sad about Toriel dying, since I somewhat expected a tragic situation to occur.
. Please no main game spoilers, but would you say this was just the tip of the iceberg? Of course it is a demo, but you know.
I'm just sad I'm not more sad.

I think because I knew that there was
commentary on traditional reliance on violence as a solution in video games, and I had seen enough of other trailers for the game to guess that Toriel would die early or something, along with others' impressions of the demo remarking it made them sad and feel like a monster
, and I didn't have enough time to play the demo in one sitting, the
impact was lost on me. I tried to avoid killing her by not fighting at all and only talking the first time I fought her, and when I wasn't getting anywhere after 7 or so tries, and sparing her wasn't working I fled and went to bed and some text came up urging for action.

I actually tried once again to avoid conflict and went to bed to no effect. Same message, and only a small deviation in dialogue when I confronted Toriel again. I also tried resolving the situation by trying to get hit by her projectiles when she stopped trying to hit me, but to no avail. I then planned only to weaken her and then to spare her, but the final hit I landed straight in the middle of the bar and it did way more damage than I expected.

She died and I felt bad, but unfortunately I had expected the conflict based on the factors I already listed, and because I played the demo over around 5 different sessions, there wasn't enough build up I guess to get majorly emotionally invested, even though I felt for the character as soon as she showed up and I wanted to avoid killing her. I want to be more sad about it, and I really did like the character, but I guess the idea I had for playing this game in bursts doesn't work out too well. Would you all agree that when I get to the main game, I need to play it all at once to help me feel more connected?

I know the game keeps track of restarts, but I still would like a small hint towards what I could have done differently. Again, please no main game spoilers at all, I've only just finished the demo. Also, what were people's completion times for it, I got about 10-15 minutes over an hour since I did a little bit of farming of gold for the spider cookies and I always resolved conflicts without violence until the end. Just wondering how much broadly this demo covers of the main game. Please no percentage estimates, just let me know if the "six hours" play through estimates are probably based on violent playthroughs or not.

So I just beat the game again doing another true pacifist run. Best game. Saw a lot more secrets this time around

PACIFIST ENDING SPOILERS
Talking to Asriel at the end made me incredibly sad. I really do wish there was a way to save him. It's sad to hear that the First Human was basically the reason things turned to shit for him yet he still cares for him. I know we will never know why exactly the First Human hated humanity but you can't help but wonder.

The demo is from 2 years ago and also doubled as a proof of concept
The ruins in the current game
has better hints on pacifism, and one direct hint on how to save toriel. Also the encounter rate is lower, and Vege monsters are possible to defeat passively.

The 6 hours estimate is one playthrough, start to finish, without going for any alternate endings.

The portion of the game in the demo took me about an hour and a half, and my time by the end of my first playthrough was about 8 hours.

Though, to me, the amount of time played doesn't really matter to me in this case. I think there's pretty much the perfect amount of content in the game for what it set out to do.

And, well, I'll just say
you haven't solved the demo yet. ]; )

Thanks for responding! Interesting that the demo's content is improved upon in the main game. I'm not too worried about play time since one of the reasons I was glad to pick the game up was it seemed like it'd be compatible with a play style accommodating my little free time by allowing frequent quick sessions. I just don't want the game to feel too quick and I was a little worried that based on my play time for the demo, it constituted about a sixth of the game. Apparently others have beaten the demo in half the time though so IDK. Would you two agree that playing it in one or two sittings would be better than playing it until a save point, stopping, starting a few days later, repeat? I want this game to affect me as much as it clearly has the potential to, and I feel I may have botched the early parts of the game by playing them in this way.

I did think it was idd that I had to just run aeay from the vegetable guys, good to know that's changed I guess. As for the "hint" on how to save Toriel, it isn't something that is missed before she blocks the exit, right? As in if I don't catch on to it in the main game by the time she goes downstairs, I can still take my time to figure out the solution? It isn't something as simple as I was thinking with the demo, which would be to weaken then spare her, right? I guess I shouldn't be asking specific questions because I want to avoid specific answers, if you could at least answer the second question that'd be appreciated, thanks again!

Also is ];) a Toriel version of ;)?

Edit:

Does waiting around for Toriel early on do anything besides bring up some dialogues? I tried it out one day while using the final game copy I have from Steam (before finishing the demo) and I got some funny/cute dialogues to pop up occasionally, but I had to quit the game (because I had to sleep) and wasn't sure if there was going to be an "end" to the waiting.

Now on Uncharted 3, surprisingly quite a large graphical jump after 2. Maybe not on the scale from 1 to 2 but it is noticeable. Aiming has definitely been fixed but enemy hit reactions are the same as ps3. Much worse than 1 and 2 in this regard.

Hahahah man I have almost clicked on the uncharted thread by accident a few times trying to get to the Undertale one.
