Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
If Obama wins any of FL, OH or VA Romney is done unless Romney sweeps the rest of the swings including ones he's not currently projected to win like NH or IA.

Could you elaborate?

The number of electoral votes is proportional to the state's population, right? It just seems like there is no reason for us to not directly elect the president. I would think an argument could easily be made that it harms democracy, especially since the swing states are the only ones that matter and get any play under the EC

Originally, slaves counted as 3/5 of a person when it came to representation in Congress as well as the electoral college. But these slaves couldn't vote. So southern states were in favor of the electoral college because their influence was artificially increased. Low population states also like the electoral college, because it artificially increases their representation.

Can somebody explain the electoral college to me? I know what it is and how it works, I just have never heard a compelling argument as to why it exists, or why it originated in the first place

The electoral college in its present form is significantly different than its original intended incarnation.

Originally, the drafters of the Constitution intended for the people to principally vote for electors, who would then vote for a president based on their own discretion. Originally, the common people weren't trusted to know enough to vote on the president directly at all. Electors were meant to be people campaigning in their own right. Of course, back then the vice president was the guy who came in second place in the vote (that didn't last long).

Over the decades, the electoral college was reformed so that the vote on ballots was directly for the presidential candidates, and the electors became duty-bound to match their votes with those of the popular vote from their state. This is a process that happened slowly on a state-by-state basis.

So the answer is that our present system is the result of a contradictory mix of original intention, shifting expectations, and lots of political compromise.

People from America and foreign countries posting in here like they are fearing Romney winning like it's the worst thing ever need to chill. Sounds just like people tripping out when it was looking like Obama might win. Neither candidate is the worst ever and will ruin everyone's lives and the world. There are still tons of elected officials and other members of government who have an enormous influence on the direction of the country. I don't particularly love either candidate, but neither am I fearing the election of either as a possible embarrassment to our country/ vessel of imminent destruction.

This. No matter who wins everybody else in power will be "lol nope".

Romney might be lots of things, but he is a politician. Of course he is going to be a terrible guy.

Obama will win easily anyway. The daily show will suffer because of it. Everybody needs to relax.
