Just woke up and checked the results... That DID seem pretty close in the end.
Granted i don't exactly know how the EC voting mechanism works in detail but it did seem a little weird to see just HOW many states Romney won in compared to Obama and yet he lost hmm...
Anyway, the main thing is that Obama won which seems to be clearly the lesser of 2 evils at the very least.

Edit: Rather, the actual vote tallies weren't in for the West Coast. Just the electoral predictions.

The amount of electoral college votes is in proportion to the state's population. So you can win a bunch of states that have low population and not gain a whole lot of ground. These tend to be rural and less populous states that go red.
that was early before the votes were counted... Obama is now up 1.6 million and counting

Electoral college is complicated but suffice to say it's based on a calculation of representative population of each state rather than the state itself.
Obama leads that 303 to 203 and is winning FLA which is worth another 29 EC votes

It's based on the State Representatives and Senate members. So my state Missouri has 8 representatives and the 2 senators making it 10 electoral votes.
Representatives are based on your share of the population of the United States. So the least votes your state can have is 3.
Some states are different but the vast majority have their votes cast based on the popular vote within the state. The majority of Missourians voted for Romney so he got the 10 votes.
Also we didn't elect Akin guys! Hooray!
