The answer to the Battle of Meereen not happening is simple. This is what I think.

[Both speculation and Season 5 spoilers behind spoiler tags]

The whole Meereenese knot will be streamlined this season, and Dany will be over in Westeros relatively soon. The Yunkai stuff will be dealt with early and will not become a later issue. Barristan's only real role going forward is his coordination of the siege, so he'll get axed early. Possibly Grey Worm too. There will be a big confrontation in Daznak's Pit between Dany and co. and the Sons of the Harpy. Drogon will appear, wacky hijinks will occur, and Dany will mount him.

However, here's where I think it will all branch off. Dany will not fly to the Dothraki Sea and paint it brown. The Dothraki arc in the show is over, and Mago's death is irrelevant, despite GRRM's constant whinging. We saw how quickly Stannis' army issues were resolved in Season 4 - with a wave of the hand he suddenly had the Golden Company in his employ. There's no reason something similar can't occur on Dany's side of the world to get things where they need to be.

Varys has openly declared his loyalty to Daenerys, and Tyrion is by her side by the end of the season. Aegon doesn't exist, and by extension Aegon's invasion of Westeros doesn't exist. That leaves one Targaryen who'll be invading Westeros in Season 6. Everything should already be in place by the Season 5 finale.

Yeah, it really seems like they need her in Westeros next season for finish this in 7 (if that is the plan). Can you imagine the final scene of this season being the 3 dragons flying over Dany's fleet with Dany and Daario on one dragon, Tyrion on another, and Lady Stoneheart on the third. Jorah will be tied behind a ship swimming along with them.
Grey Worm and Mesandre and Missandei will be at the front of the boat doing the Titanic spot. Dany will be wearing Victarion's charred arm around her neck but they won't mention where it came from.

I will be severely disappointed if this doesn't happen.

Well, it looks like it's time for me to bail out of this thread as ya'll are speaking in mad spoilers now and I still want to be surprised by the show.

So an actor who plays a still-alive character in the books and dies in season 5, not only reacted badly to his death when reading the script, but also wrote a letter to D&D about it.

I wonder if it's the same actor who is familiar with the books and who expected a bigger role this season. I thought for sure it was Ian McElhinney (Barristan), but I don't see him begging D&D to stay on the show. My guess now is that the actor is Finn Jones (Loras). From I saw, he's very excited about the show and seems crazy enough to write a letter to the writers. Maybe he thought with Tyrion, Tywin and Joffrey out of the KL picture and the big focus being Lannister vs Tyrell, he'd have an increased role from his whopping two scenes in S4.

I'm okay with Loras dying. I think their utilization of Loras in the show is quite offensive. If killing Loras puts an end to the easy unfunny gay jokes, then I don't have a problem with it.

I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler, I will not click that spoiler.

Gods damnit, can't the show just start already?

It's just speculation, nothing to fret over not seeing.

Yeah, I hope it's Loras. In the show he's just a walking stereotype.

Book Loras is used as a gay joke in a large percentage of his scenes too. Even in the books he's basically a character defined by his sexuality.

And none of this should be spoiler tagged.

.
Book Loras is totally fine. He's absolutely not defined by his sexuality in the books. He was defined by his love of Renly, that's different.

Half of his interactions with people consist of them making fun of him for being gay.
That's not true and plenty of people read the books without even realizing he was gay. Either way I don't like the character or the actor in the show and hope they kill him off. Focus on the tyrells people care about.

Jaime, Littlefinger, Cersei. IIRC even Stannis makes some jabs. Post book 1, much of the time Loras is mentioned there's some dialogue or internal thought joking about his gayness.
I know that. Was wondering about times it was addressed to his face. Besides Jaime, I'm pretty sure it's all rumor behind his back. I guess people are miffed that they made his sexuality overt(shaving, whoring)in a stereotypical way and downplaying his skill as a knight, popularity etc.

Characters mocking Loras' homosexuality =/= Loras being used strictly as a gay joke. In the show, his whole persona seems to revolve around being Renly's gay lover (I can't think of a single scene featuring him where there is no mention of him being gay), where in the book he was a highly skilled fighter and wildly popular knight who just happened to be gay. He's ambitious and skillful. Even the arrogant Jaime Lannister has great respect for him. He halso has a fiery temperament. None of that is true in the show.

The showrunners are incapable of writing a homosexual man who isn't some kind of cliche. Let's not forget this is the show that turned Renly into a wimp who's scared of blood. The only cliche thing about them in the books that I can think of is Renly's guard being named the Rainbow Guard. It was pretty stupid but there was at least an "in-universe reason" for that name (that has zero link with homosexuality).

I think all of our discussions featuring EW articles have been spoiler tagged so far. We need to come up with some consensus about what should be spoiler tagged and what shouldn't

There's no point in openly talking about what the article says and then spoiler tagging only the speculation based off of that.

That's exactly what you did!

I openly talked about stuff coming from a legit youtube video featuring D&D (discussions emerging from GOT Youtube videos haven't been spoiler tagged as far as I know) and then spoiler tagged my speculation since it was mostly based on the EW articles (and discussions emerging from them have been spoiler tagged so far).

tbh I had no idea Renly/Loras were gay/lovers until I saw the show. I forget if I'm just dumb, or just didn't pay enough attention to scenes mentioning them.

And yeah, I definitely don't really like how they've portrayed Loras in the show. His defining characteristic is that he's gay. In the books, the main thing I knew about him was that he was a really good knight/fighter.

It's pretty easy to miss in the books, especially your first time through where there's so much information coming at you that some things just slip by. Once you know about it though it becomes a "how the hell did I miss that" thing.

Since I watched the show first I knew when I started reading that he was gay but was surprised at how subtle it was. I don't even think many people in Westeros know it, unlike the show where it seems everyone knows. However, I had no idea John the Fiddler was gay in "The Mystery Knight." Upon re-reading it for like the third time I was like "how the fuck did I miss this?" Dude straight up hits on Dunk 24/7.

Yep, I was the exact same. Especially since the guy's name is "The Fiddler". I facepalmed over my own stupidity.

More wood for the fire. From his blog:

Dear Mr. Martin,

I just read that you have a lot to do and I think every real fan is extremely excited about this fact and I don't want to hold you back any longer, from writing one of the last books, but is there any chance you could tell me (us) if you will be attending other events or will you have to stay at your castle the whole year? My mother just told me, she bought three tickets for her, my wife and me for an event in Hamburg, Germany the 21. of June. Do you know if this will be canceled?!

Best wishes and happy writing from a big, big fan from Germany.

Julien

I hope not.

I have cancelled two events. So far I am still planning to attend the others on my schedule.

But that depends in large part on how the work goes. I may be forced to cancel other appearances if I find myself in desperate need of more time. I will do my best to prevent that from happening.

Sounds like he has a specific goal in mind.

Things that should be tagged: exactly nothing.

Talk about the show or don't. Don't make other people tiptoe around you.

506 right there though. Ironborn dream still alive.

Not sure if I buy these, but if they're true: They wouldn't name an episode "Kill the Boy" without some dark alternate meaning about actually killing a boy, lol. RIP Olly and/or Tommen.

Don't know enough about how they're pacing the Dorne plot to know why the Martell words would be for episode 6. Intro to Dorne is in ep 2, and I think Jaime gets there in like episode 4. Maybe this is where Jaime and Bronn get captured? Or maybe they're going really quickly and the Queenmaker stuff happens here?

And I didn't expect they would ever even mention the Gift on the show. And I don't know what role it would have in episode 7. Seems a bit too late for Stannis to be negotiating to hand it over to Wildlings, and Jon should be en route to Hardhome for episode 8 at that point. This is the one that really strikes me as odd.

Kill the boy is the quote from Jon's storyline. He frequently repeats it in his mind before he be heads Janos Slynt.

Actually, to me anyway, The Gift seems the title to make the most sense, in that it refers to various things--the Gift at the Wall, as you point out, but also, the gift of mercy (Arya kills Meryn Trant?). Plus, Cersei says something to the effect that Margaery being arrested is a gift from the gods, and creepy LF says something to Sansa about the 'gifts' he's giving her--the Vale, Harry the Heir (in the books anyway) and now, Winterfell.

Kill the boy
and let the man be born, is what Maester Aemon says to Jon, when Jon has to begin making hard choices, a leader's choices. The thinking among some fans is that Maester Aemon will die shortly after this conversation with Jon.

Disagree about double meanings, tbh. I was always pretty certain that the 'Myhsa' episode was also going to be about Catelyn showing up again as a dark mirror to Dany's themes, but nope. They don't always do that.
