Until Dawn has gone gold.

Who cares if it gets extreme scores? (Aside from devs and publisher) I just can't wait to play this with some friends. Even if its bad, it'll be fun to play and take turns with. That's what made beyond pretty fun. The order... Nah. Hopefully this turns out better :)

My chiclet teeth are chattering at the prospect of this game. Can't wait.

Meaningful variance from game to game will def make me replay multiple times. Looks beautiful, too.

Day one.

I don't think so. Hayden's towel stubbornly clings to her like food wrap in the demo they showed at E3.

Brutal horrific violence is a-okay, but stay away from nudity!

(Sometimes that falls under 'sexual themes', though.)

Maybe there'll be a PS3 SD Edition.
(Oh for that to be a thing.)

What I meant is from what I've seen so far nothing in this game gives you the impression of a game that is going to get +80
While I don't exactly see MC as a relevant metric, 80 seems to be kind of a treshold for these games at the moment, so hitting 80 or above is pretty much as good as the most critically acclaimed entries of the genre.

I already preordered it. Day 1 for me.

Ive been playing games for so long now that I dont need to wait for reviews to see if I'll like the game. Im not expecting 9's or 10's, but if you know what the game is like and are okay with that then I dont see what the problem is. Seems like a good game to play with some friends on a summer night. If youre expecting this huge open world game with 100's of hours of gameplay then that's your own fault. So to the people faulting the game for "no real gameplay", I'm sure we know what we're getting into.

Really curious how many endings it will have. Would love if its only 3 hours long with 20ish endings and a ton of different areas that change depending on your choices.

Had a chance to play this last week. Framerate was horrendous which was surprising as the game itself didn't particularly stand out graphically, especially after playing Battlefront. I guess it was not a final build but they would need to improve quite a bit to make it smooth.

Controls were also pretty clunky whilst walking around, it makes you move frustratingly slowly a lot of the time which I guess is realistic but frustrating in a game none the less.

Overall I was not really feeling it. I enjoyed Farhenheit and Heavy Rain and the style was similar here to those games but it didn't feel as engaging to me as those games. I am guessing this will review mid/low 7s from the small segments I played, perhaps the rest of the game is a lot better...

I played it last year on gamescom and had no technical problems. Controls were ok, but you notice that it was developed with PlayStation Move in mind.

The characters are very unlovable and the story is full of clichés. But that was done on purpose I assume.

It's funny how The Order 1886 was first shown as a seemingly co-op 3rd person shooter and turns to be a distasteful copy of Uncharted 1 (move, kill people, repeat) with a heavy focus on lame/pointless QTEs. As for this game, it was purposely advertised as a horror-slash type of games, with controls that would go in the lines of Heavy Rain and TellTales' Walking Dead games. In the end, I believe Until Dawn will do much better (commercially and critically) than The Order 1886, unless people (gamers and critics alike) were expecting a deep and convoluted storytelling with a major twist ala Heavy Rain.

Nonetheless, I pre-ordered the game on Amazon.ca during the E3 promotion (30% off on all my pre-orders woo-hoo!!)... so day one for me!! :D (I wonder if I'll receive the game in the same package as Rare Replay)

Looking forward to it.

I hope you mean it... :P

3 hours? That would be terrible. x_x

3 hours with a shit ton of different settings and ending that are dependent on your choices sounds great. Hell the story could be completely different as well...think Cabin in th Woods opening when they had 6 different artifacts that would unleash 6 different monsters, then spread out from there.

I wish this game was written by Joss Whedon instead of David Cage.

edit: Wow, this is me finding out late in the game that Until Dawn is not Quantic Dream's next game.

LOL... It had to happen sooner or later mate. :P

Not sure if this is a game I want.

I look forward for the release so I can make my decision.

If you have played Heavy Rain or Telltales Games' best offering (Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us), then you might like this one. In the terms of gameplay, you should expect similar elements, but set in a horror-slasher scenario (like that one scene with Madison at the creepy doctor's house/basement). It could take advantage of that scary vibe... :P

Preordered this a while back when it was really cheap. Really excited. reminds me of a digital choose your own adventure.

Based on all of the interviews, it should be to some extent. They said (if I remember correctly...) that there were several key choices that would impact the rest of the game based of their Butterfly-effect system (could be similar in terms of impact to Life Is Strange, no?). In the end, it will be possible to have the character dead or alive, based on your choices and playthrough. That and you will have different totems collectibles that you can find and pick up to foreshadowing some of the possible future events.

Yeah, I legit cannot wait. I love watching these games rather than playing it (Sorry?) and I really enjoyed watching my wife play Telltale titles. This seems like a more entertaining version of the genre, and I can't wait to see what decisions she make while she gets herself killed. I think having a female character as lead may resonate with her a lot more.

More reasons for us to play together other than Call of Duty!

I'm with you on this. It doesn't necessarily need to have different monsters or killers, but a short 2-3 hours game that you can play in one sitting with VASTLY different outcomes could be superb, it would allow you to start and finish the game in one sitting with a group of friends and have all that content play out differently each time you play...

A short total duration could allow devs to come up with vastly different content instead of slightly different acts leading out to similiar endings.

But of course it would be hated and everybody would be asking for it to sell at 10 dollars, omitting the fact that there could be 50 hours of completely unique content.

It's gonna be funny how happy people will be regarding the choices they make under a what-seems-to-be-shorter input time (when compared to TellTales' Walking Dead or QD's Heavy Rain).

If Heavy Rain is anything to go by... it could be done in a good/fun/pleasant way with a 7-8 hours long game. People still need to justify their purchase... and how long it needs to be completed is gonna be a huge factor of its total sales number. Good thing SCE didn't try to sell as a more traditional horror games in the likes of Silent Hill or the original Resident Evil. It should do great if advertised as Heavy Rain-esque type of game.

It will be interesting to see the reviews for Until Dawn. I wonder how many of them say negative things about the story and characters, saying things like it's cliché and the characters are annoying, but totally missing the point that it's supposed to be that way, in a b-movie cheesy horror style.

Hopefully a lot of reviewers like horror movies and get that the game is doing these horror movie tropes intentionally.

I fear another Driveclub fiasco where they just "dont get it".

I imagine this'll be another Order situation, stunning production values wrapped around an okay game, but we'll see. I'd love to be surprised.

Unlike The Order, this one won't be able to get away with lackluster writing, though.

Seems like a game that you'd only want to play once then trade in. I enjoyed the little I played at PSX and E3.

I don't think there's anything not to get. It's seems a pretty simplistic game.

Did you miss the point of the quote?

They will complain about it's elements more than likely. They will call it teenage slasher campy cheese, and probably penalize the game for it, because they "don't get it" is supposed to be that way. Or pretend to be ignorant to the fact.

But hopefully that does not happen.

There are eight characters, each character can survive or die at the end. I'm bad at math, but the game should have 100+ endings based on that alone, & that's if the characters' survival is the only thing that affects the endings.

As for the length of the game, they already confirmed that it's a 9 hour game (it can probably be shorter if you kill everybody very early).

More often than not when reviewers pan a game because they "don't get it" it's got nothing to do with their opinion and a lot more to do with the opinion of the person who almost always hasn't played it, but who wanted the game to be highly rated.

Each one dead or alive would count up to 256 endings, 2^8. If catching the killer or not is something that would happen in the end, double that to 512 endings. As you say other factors may also determine the ending so it could be even more!

Oh man, all those endings & The Phantom Pain comes out one week after this game. I'm gonna need to dedicate the entire week to this game if I want to play The Phantom Pain day 1.

Quite interested on reading reviews at launch

I'm really excited for this but i decided to wait and grab the game around Halloween, perfect time to play a slasher :)

except that like in Heavy Rain, Beyond and many of these other "non-games" you can walk around, explore the environment, make decisions and so on, you know like in "real" games. QTE is used for action scenes.

You sound like 99% of the people who call these games "interactive movies" or "non-games" who you can just tell have never played any of these games because they assume that QTE is all there is to it.

I think the success of this game really depends on how good the story is. The Telltale Walking Dead games have great stories. Beyond Two Souls was similar but the story sort of sucked. I really wish it was directed by someone in Hollywood who could tell a good story. If the story sucks, it is not going to be reviewed that well.

I think this type of game fits a certain audience on the platform well who really don't care about framerates, review scores, challenge, and traditional game play. They just want to be entertained. For them, it will be the game of the year regardless of how it is reviewed. If this game is a success, maybe there will be a whole market for these type of QTE movie-like games on consoles. I want a horror QTE game from the makers of the Saw.

There's already a sizeable market for those games, some people on GAF are just resisting the idea of having more diversity in the industry.

Those games (Quantic Dream & Telltale) have a large female following as well based on the let's plays & twitch streams, it's great that the industry is expanding to all types of people & I don't understand why some people refuse to accept that.

Beyonds issue was the lack of impact your decisions had on the out come. The sorry doesn't have to be amazing just make it solid, but give the choices some impact, make the user feel their choice matters.

Never was interested in games like Heavy Rain or Beyond Two Souls, but this game looks really appealing to me, The framerate does look like total ass occasionally though, and I find it to be pretty distracting, so I am hoping they fix it

My biggest issue with Beyond was more that in response to the QTE complainers from Heavy Rain they made the inputs for actions very basic. I really loved the way that the inputs in HR reflected the characters' abilities, state of mind, and the action they were performing. Brought me much deeper into the game world.

May purchase come Oct. Seems like a fun game with friends around all shouting at each other on what choice to take. Also it better pay proper homage to teen slasher films,
bare breasts and all.

Yeah, here is modern Metacritic as interpreted by the internet:

60 and below = filth
60-70 = unplayable
70-80 = basically an utter failure
80-100 = legendary masterpiece

It looks like they're thinking about putting out a demo -

RZmp9IM.png

Good idea. I remember the demo for Heavy Rain doing a lot to boost hype and exposure for the game prior to it coming out. Until Dawn's demo should be a similar type of affair - split it into two segments and have one be an action-heavy sequence that does a proper job of showcasing the differences your choices make, while the other serves as a more mellow part of the game that focuses on atmosphere and exploration. Would help the game out a lot I think.
