The GM was speaking nonsense during that press conference.
Well I was still spanked, but it was pretty light and they would make it seem worse than what they were gonna do.Like bluffing or something?

I think I got two (open hand) spankings in my entire life. Neither were vicious or all painful.Did anybody have parents that did scare-spankings? When I think back, I never really got hit hard at all. I think as a kid, it seemed a lot scarier. Once I caught on and stopped fearing the weak spankings my parents gave ms, they stopped. Still think it was wrong of them to try and discipline me with fear. I'm just curious if others here had a similar upbringings?
Taking away his livelihood, banning for a year, etc, is ridiculous. Spanking a child with a switch is LEGAL. It will leave marks. I have no doubt that for most the whooping was too far. But his kid didn't even cry - I know how it was for me, the parent tries to ensure the kid realizes his mistake and tears are part of it. He states he got 5 more than normal.
I don't think this kind of spanking should be legal, maybe no spanking at all should be legal just because it just becomes degrees and gray areas. That would be where to start - if corporal punishment is just wrong for kids no matter what, then make it illegal.
Finally - for those who think spanking with a switch is worse than a hand you are dead wrong.
Legality has nothing to do with it. Bronco players still can't smoke weed. Think about it. In the eyes of the NFL, smoking weed is worse than beating a 4 year old child with what is essentially a wooden whip.I think folks here calling for his head are the ones out of touch. GAF is very liberal and I am now liberal after being raised conservative.
This is nothing like the Ray Rice case, you don't hear anyone stating it is OK to knock your wife out with a fist if she is getting out of line.
It appears a very significant portion of america continues with corporal punishment and all the gray areas that come with it. My parents are part of that culture - it isn't just the south, but I bet it falls on conservative lines and religious lines.

No way does AP play this week. The sponsors are going to put a stop to that.
Who is going to suspend him? Spineless Goodell? The Vikings after today's press conference in which they were absolutely shameless?

We'll see. We are less than a day from the Vikings shitshow of a press conference and you are already starting to see the tide turning against this decision. If that continues to escalate I think the Vikings and/or the NFL will bow to the pressure.

I was also a pretty good kid. But I knew that if I didn't behave, spankings were always on the table. That fear stopped me from even thinking about doing stupid things.
I would love to have parents who have to incentivize me to behave. One of my friends disobeyed his parents and bought a motorcycle. In order to get him to sell it, his parents promised to buy him a new Acura.
Great parenting.
Fuck America's obsession with fame and sports.
yeah sports suck oh and this guy should be in jail.

One of the most disturbing things about this is how so many seem to be stating this belief that "whuppings" like this are the common and expected way to raise black kids. Even Sir Charles made it a race issue when defending AP.
Really harkens back, and I hate to say this, to a slave mentality that beatings are the only way to teach.
This is probably one of the most ill informed posts I've read on GAF.
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said:It is an awful situation. Yes, Mr. Peterson is entitled to due process and should be "innocent until proven guilty." However, he is a public figure; and his actions, as described, are a public embarrassment to the Vikings organization and the State of Minnesota. Whipping a child to the extent of visible wounds, as has been alleged, should not be tolerated in our state. Therefore, I believe the team should suspend Mr. Peterson, until the accusations of child abuse have been resolved by the criminal justice system.
However, I will not turn my back on the Vikings and their fans, as some have suggested. The Vikings belong to Minnesota and in Minnesota. This has been the team's only home; and our citizens, including myself, have been its most dedicated fans.
As a black man it makes me so sad to see this. For some reason we expect toddlers and kids to be so different entity than adults and I don't understand why.
Bosses would never beat their employees to make a point, but with kids it's expected. And some stupid black people (yes I'm upset at my people) want to make it seem like we a special and it has to happen to our kids especially rather than to all races of kids and toddlers.
In another indication of the hit to the NFL's reputation, major sponsor Anheuser-Busch is expressing concern over the league's handling of the recent domestic violence and child abuse charges facing active players.
Anheuser-Busch, the official beer of the NFL since 2011, previously had declined to comment on the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson cases, among others. But Tuesday, an A-B spokesperson released this statement:
"We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season. We are not yet satisfied with the league's handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league."
wow.they usually defend it because you did something stupid as a child. You're getting actual child abuse (not taking care of a kid) confused with a spanking.it's not like whether you're a fan or not makes them less factual.
I'm not a fan of my family's genetic predilections towards things like diabetes and heart disease, but that doesn't mean I'm going to disregard the facts. It means I'm going to change the way I live to minimize that risk.
The facts are overwhelming that hitting your kid isn't a positive thing, not in the short run, and not in the long run.
There's a reason that the majority of people who defend their own beatings as a child usually say "I turned out okay." Not "well," or "great," or "wonderfully." But "okay." As if somewhere inside, even as they're defending their parents from the accusations that what they did was wrong, they know that they weren't really helped by what was done to them. That those beatings didn't really unlock a new level of potential that they achieved thanks to that "discipline."
They're "okay," yeah. But I think even they know that it could have been better. That it probably should have been better, honestly.
But they settled for "okay," and so it's okay if others do too.
Good idea:

Vikings and Catholic Charities canceled event at St. Joseph's Home for Children, which gives shelter to kids affected by abuse, instability.
Why cancel that event?Good idea:

If that's true, then that's like the opposite of what they should've done.
Why cancel that event?

They're fucking over the victims twice. Not exactly good optics while supporting the very act this charity is against.
Nooowww we're talking:
Jon Krawczynski
@APkrawczynski
An eye-opening development: Nike stores in Twin Cities have pulled all Adrian Peterson merch from shelves. Nike.
Also:
Anheuser-Busch: Deep concern of NFL handling of abuse cases
Not as good as pulling sponsorship obviously, but that's a pretty big voice.
EDIT: Also, how do you post tweets on here like they're pictures?
They're fucking over the victims twice.
Of course it's hypocritical, but saving face seems to be more important to them than actually helping people.
I need to read into that. I had/have no idea what happened there. The same way CBS cut Rihanna from the NFL show last week?
Organizations and businesses are starting to jump ship and rightly so.
This guy beat the hell out of a kid with a stick and says it is not abuse. He doesn't get it and the Vikings certainly don't get it.
I don't understand how a guy that had a child die last year from a man physically killing his kid for domestic reasons, would then turn around and beat his kid like this in his "whooping room".
