Did anybody have parents that did scare-spankings? When I think back, I never really got hit hard at all. I think as a kid, it seemed a lot scarier. Once I caught on and stopped fearing the weak spankings my parents gave ms, they stopped. Still think it was wrong of them to try and discipline me with fear. I'm just curious if others here had a similar upbringings?
I think I got two (open hand) spankings in my entire life. Neither were vicious or all painful.
I was also a pretty good kid. But I knew that if I didn't behave, spankings were always on the table. That fear stopped me from even thinking about doing stupid things.

I would love to have parents who have to incentivize me to behave. One of my friends disobeyed his parents and bought a motorcycle. In order to get him to sell it, his parents promised to buy him a new Acura.

Great parenting.

I think folks here calling for his head are the ones out of touch. GAF is very liberal and I am now liberal after being raised conservative.

This is nothing like the Ray Rice case, you don't hear anyone stating it is OK to knock your wife out with a fist if she is getting out of line.

It appears a very significant portion of america continues with corporal punishment and all the gray areas that come with it. My parents are part of that culture - it isn't just the south, but I bet it falls on conservative lines and religious lines.

Taking away his livelihood, banning for a year, etc, is ridiculous. Spanking a child with a switch is LEGAL. It will leave marks. I have no doubt that for most the whooping was too far. But his kid didn't even cry - I know how it was for me, the parent tries to ensure the kid realizes his mistake and tears are part of it. He states he got 5 more than normal.

I don't think this kind of spanking should be legal, maybe no spanking at all should be legal just because it just becomes degrees and gray areas. That would be where to start - if corporal punishment is just wrong for kids no matter what, then make it illegal.

Finally - for those who think spanking with a switch is worse than a hand you are dead wrong.

the Vikes GM comes off like such a fucking sleeze in that press conference. How do these assholes have zero self-awareness? If you are out there having to defend child abuse maybe you are doing something wrong.

How often do grand juries indict people for doing things that are LEGAL? You are dead wrong. Abusing and (really) assaulting a child is NOT legal.

Legality has nothing to do with it. Bronco players still can't smoke weed. Think about it. In the eyes of the NFL, smoking weed is worse than beating a 4 year old child with what is essentially a wooden whip.

Who is going to suspend him? Spineless Goodell? The Vikings after today's press conference in which they were absolutely shameless?

We'll see. We are less than a day from the Vikings shitshow of a press conference and you are already starting to see the tide turning against this decision. If that continues to escalate I think the Vikings and/or the NFL will bow to the pressure.

I had to do a double take this morning when I heard about the Vikings reinstating him. For a second, I thought I had imagined the pictures that were on TMZ. They should have been enough, not sponsors boycotting.

My mom never beat me on a consistent basis. Got hit on the arm maybe twice but that's about it. My mother hated the idea of beating her kids. When I was around 10 years old I was trying to adjust the TV because the viewing angle wasn't right for me. The TV ended up falling and stopped working completely. I knew I was fucked. She came home. She didn't yell or hit me or nothing. All she did was not buy a new TV for an entire year. I never touched the TV again until I was strong enough to handle it.

People need to understand that there is never only one way. Just because you were raised by on one method doesn't mean the method is right and it doesn't mean you have to apply the method on your children. "But I was raised like this." Are you a fucking sheep!? Do you not have a mind of your own!?

Also, the idea that "real" black parents beat their kids displays some deep rooted slave mentality. My mother is a Jamaican woman who didn't follow the general trend of beating her kids like many Jamaican parents do. She was clever enough to teach me life lessons without much physical force.

I'm a Vikings fan and I've had to see this team go through a bunch of dumb shit. Love Boat, Whizzinator, you name it. Not to mention all the heartbreak. Was really looking forward to this season, new coach and QB to hopefully lead us in the future. Reasons to be optimistic. Then this happens. He abused the kid, there's no excuse for it, he admitted it, and should not be playing. The Vikings could of done the right thing today. But did they? Nope, of course they didn't. And now it's all blowing up in their face. How the hell did they think this was gonna go? This shit is just so damn depressing, it makes me mad. Two weeks in and I already want the season to end. Just fuck the NFL in general, I'm getting ready to quit it altogether. Sorry if this comes off as a rant but I needed to blow a little steam. I'm just so sick of all the incompetence by this league.

As long as people watch games, buy merch and endorse the league/teams they're not going to care. Gotta impact their bottom line.

McDonald is still active too. Joke of an organization.

1- this is a 4 year old kid for chrissakes.

2- there were defensive wounds on his hands, not to mention lacerations on his legs, buttocks and scrotum.

This is probably one of the most ill informed posts I've read on GAF.

One of the most disturbing things about this is how so many seem to be stating this belief that "whuppings" like this are the common and expected way to raise black kids. Even Sir Charles made it a race issue when defending AP.

Really harkens back, and I hate to say this, to a slave mentality that beatings are the only way to teach.

As a black man it makes me so sad to see this. For some reason we expect toddlers and kids to be so different entity than adults and I don't understand why.

Bosses would never beat their employees to make a point, but with kids it's expected. And some stupid black people (yes I'm upset at my people) want to make it seem like we a special and it has to happen to our kids especially rather than to all races of kids and toddlers.

Minnesota Governor: Vikings Should Suspend Adrian Peterson

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said:
It is an awful situation. Yes, Mr. Peterson is entitled to due process and should be "innocent until proven guilty." However, he is a public figure; and his actions, as described, are a public embarrassment to the Vikings organization and the State of Minnesota. Whipping a child to the extent of visible wounds, as has been alleged, should not be tolerated in our state. Therefore, I believe the team should suspend Mr. Peterson, until the accusations of child abuse have been resolved by the criminal justice system.

However, I will not turn my back on the Vikings and their fans, as some have suggested. The Vikings belong to Minnesota – and in Minnesota. This has been the team's only home; and our citizens, including myself, have been its most dedicated fans.

It makes me sick bruh.

Nooowww we're talking:

Jon Krawczynski
@APkrawczynski
An eye-opening development: Nike stores in Twin Cities have pulled all Adrian Peterson merch from shelves. Nike.

Also:

Anheuser-Busch: Deep concern of NFL handling of abuse cases

In another indication of the hit to the NFL's reputation, major sponsor Anheuser-Busch is expressing concern over the league's handling of the recent domestic violence and child abuse charges facing active players.

Anheuser-Busch, the official beer of the NFL since 2011, previously had declined to comment on the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson cases, among others. But Tuesday, an A-B spokesperson released this statement:

"We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season. We are not yet satisfied with the league's handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league."

Not as good as pulling sponsorship obviously, but that's a pretty big voice.

EDIT: Also, how do you post tweets on here like they're pictures?

it's not like whether you're a fan or not makes them less factual.

I'm not a fan of my family's genetic predilections towards things like diabetes and heart disease, but that doesn't mean I'm going to disregard the facts. It means I'm going to change the way I live to minimize that risk.

The facts are overwhelming that hitting your kid isn't a positive thing, not in the short run, and not in the long run.

There's a reason that the majority of people who defend their own beatings as a child usually say "I turned out okay." Not "well," or "great," or "wonderfully." But "okay." As if somewhere inside, even as they're defending their parents from the accusations that what they did was wrong, they know that they weren't really helped by what was done to them. That those beatings didn't really unlock a new level of potential that they achieved thanks to that "discipline."

They're "okay," yeah. But I think even they know that it could have been better. That it probably should have been better, honestly.

But they settled for "okay," and so it's okay if others do too.
wow.they usually defend it because you did something stupid as a child. You're getting actual child abuse (not taking care of a kid) confused with a spanking.

In fact,if you smoke or drink around your child, now that's child abuse.because i feel if you aren't trying your best for the child. It's abuse.

Good idea:

Ben Goessling ‏@GoesslingESPN 11m
Vikings and Catholic Charities canceled event at St. Joseph's Home for Children, which gives shelter to kids affected by abuse, instability.

Dan Bernstein ‏@dan_bernstein now
Sources tell me #Nike has privately contacted the #NFL to express concern and ask about what the league plans to do regarding #Peterson.

No I'm not. I was both spanked, and beaten. The line between the two ended up being very thin. Thinner than the belt I caught more than a few times, in fact. I'm personally familiar with both practices, and neither of them were positive means of teaching me things. They were done because my parents had lost their shit, and that was it. The educational aspect of the punishment was secondary, if not tertiary, to the primary concern, which was to hurt me as a means to express anger. That was it.

If people want to be honest, that's almost always why it happens, too. It has nothing to do with teaching a kid not to do something, and has a lot to do with being angry at a kid and making sure the kid feels just how angry you are.

And yeah, you probably shouldn't be smoking around your kid. But I wouldn't call that abuse, just carelessness coupled with a mild lack of concern in general.

Actively hitting your children is abusive. Especially when you're hitting the children with a stick to the point that a week later the wounds are still visible and in some cases haven't healed yet.

They cancelled the event because they're doubling down and not going to change their minds. So they'd rather not deal with the hypocritical optics they would otherwise get. I don't disagree that cancelling is bad in of itself and that it's going to result in bad optics anyway, but clearly their media team has a different opinion.

They're fucking over the victims twice.

Of course it's hypocritical, but saving face seems to be more important to them than actually helping people.

The same way CBS cut Rihanna from the NFL show last week?

His own charity bails. #AdrianPeterson "All Day Foundation" goes on hiatus until everybody has "reflected" on impact on his philanthropy

Organizations and businesses are starting to jump ship and rightly so.

This guy beat the hell out of a kid with a stick and says it is not abuse. He doesn't get it and the Vikings certainly don't get it.

I don't understand how a guy that had a child die last year from a man physically killing his kid for domestic reasons, would then turn around and beat his kid like this in his "whooping room".

Oh. They have pics of the whooping room? Or just the statement from his child/ the four year old.
