Upgrade to Windows 10?

For Windows 10 to activate, do I need to reserve the upgrade?
Or can I just install clean Windows 7 then use media creation tool to upgrade to Windows 10?

You don't need to reserve anything. Upgrade your 7 or 8 with the tool and you'll get an activated 10.

I need driver updates from Nvidia and Microsoft. I got a new laptop and upgraded it immediately to Windows 10. Most of the applications work fine except I have a sneaking suspicion that my laptop isn't performing as well as it should be.

I tried running 3DMark and my score is at least 800 points less than other systems with identical specs(my GPU is a 950m and my cpu is an i7 4720hq). Worst of all, Team Fortress 2 has a consistently low framerate no matter what settings I change.

I don't want to downgrade since I skipped Windows 8 but I'm very tempted.

Do you have GeForce Experience? You could download & install new drivers that way.

I've had the Windows 10 update prompt on my computer for a couple of days now but i'm hesitant to take the plunge. I love Windows 7 Pro, it works perfectly for me, I love the interface and have had zero problems with it....I honestly think it is perfect for my needs as I don't play games on my PC except Diablo 3 which runs without a hitch anyways. I was going to upgrade my dads PC as he is on 8.1 as a means to test out Win 10 (he hates 8.1) but the prompt to upgrade isn't coming up on his. I will have to just wait it out and try it out on his computer before I even think about upgrading my own.

Windows 10 Forced Updates Causing Endless Crash Loops
If only someone could have foreseen that forced updates might cause problems...
I did.

Most of these issues with a profile still in the registry comes from shitty software installs. I had this bug, and it was VirtualBox installing a user into my system, and the uninstall not removing it correctly from the registry after.

MS will probably fix this soon if they haven't fixed it already, but there is no way to predict what sort of shit can be pushed into the registry and not removed correctly. MS just has to find out what's breaking and then fix it for that particular case. The evils you need to accept if you want a semi-open system.

If you're on Pro you can actually disable this via gpedit.msc:

I want to upgrade from 7, but I am using Bootcamp on my iMac. Is it safe to upgrade? Will it break my drivers and make it a challenge to reboot into Mac OS?

The wireless Intel Bluetooth built into my Haswell motherboard is not supported by Windows 10. I wonder if this will be patched soon? Does anybody else have this issue?

It did partially break my MBP.
Make a new Bootcamp USB key, and do a repair install on the Bootcamp drivers after you install Win 10. After that you should be fine.

Did you try looking for drivers on Intel's website? Network drivers framework hasn't changed since Vista so there's a fair chance that Win8 drivers will work just fine.

Hello gaf! I want to install windows 10, but am hesitant about a single driver. I own a midi-to-usb device (MOTU fastlane, www.motu.com/products/midi/fastlane_usb). Their website's driver page mentions compatability for 7, 8 & 8.1. Best guess, do you think it will retain compatability? Currently on win 7.

It should absolutely work, there were no major changes in regards to how audio inputs work. Nor do they use some features that are only in one version on Windows.

All my studio recording equipment just works, even the old stuff that have only drivers for Win7 oficially. Just installed them and they work as they did on 7, 8 as well as 8.1. All the way through, I would have no worries in that regard.

Is it the original or the fake one? For the fake one, you have to manually install the driver through device manager. There'll be an unknown device, then you can manually update and select X360 wireless driver.

I have this issue and I don't see the x360 wireless driver in the list. What are the exact steps to do this? Did this countless times on win 8/etc (god DAMN do I wish I got a real one instead) but I dont' see the option anymore. I see a list of manufacturers for drivers, and 360 isn't in the Microsoft listing.

Does Game DVR not work with games? I tried using it for my Steam games, but the only times where the guide would even show up were in Big Picture Mode's main menu, and MGSV (the latter which would tell me it couldn't record right now, try again later).

So the most I was able to record was three seconds of my Steam libary in BPM.

I just upgraded, and I can't get the taskbar to auto-hide. I made sure the option was checked and rechecked and restarted, and it just won't go away if any programs are running.

It has only worked in borderless mode for me.

I'm suffering from an odd bug in my laptop. The specs are absolutely nothing to write about (a Celeron 2955u procesador running at 1.4 GHz and 4 GB of RAM. Integrated Graphics, obviously), but nonetheless, I was able to play games like Valkyria Chronicles at 720p/30fps, with very, very rare dips to 20. However, ever since I updated to Windows 10, whenever I go fullscreen in my games, I realize that all games run slower than they did in Windows 8.1 (VC fullscreen runs at 20 fps, for example.) What's even more weird, however, is that they run better when the games are windowed or borderless. Not quite like with Win8.1, but close enough for it to stop being an issue.

I'm wondering, what gives? Is it a bug or did some configuration got changed with the upgrade? Do you guys have a suggestion for this or recommend a place to ask for help?

Edit: I'm thinking about installing the Windows 8.1 driver, instead of using the Windows 10 one in the meantime. If this fixes my issues, then I'll just have to wait for Intel to update my drivers.

Edit 2: Nevermind, found what was causing that. If you have GameDVR on on the Xbox app, it forces V-sync at all times, even at fullscreen. Disabling it solved the issue.

Edit 3: Scratch that. Valkyria Chronicles performs better, but it's still not 30 fps locked like before (it's around 25-27), and Fairy Fencer F still performs better when using borderless than when fullscreen by 3-5 more frames.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times, but if I want to stream my Xbox One to my PC, do I have to physically turn my Xbox One on every time?

The Xbox App will let you turn it on remotely, but I think they have to be connected once before you can do that. Also, Xbox One can't receive the signal if it's power settings are set to energy-saving.

What program is recommended to dig the serial key used for Windows? I got mine from school but don't have it up anywhere so need to check it somehow.

Laptop is scheduled at 4am to install the upgrade. Will it just go over Windows 8 or will it wipe everything? I have documents and things I can not lose and no way to back them up at the moment.

I read that laptops that came with Windows 7 have their serial key tied to them but those who came with Windows 8 are not? That you are able to somehow transfer that key and use it for desktop? Is that true?

Does that mean if I upgrade a laptop the key I'll get in Windows 10 on the laptop will be the type of key that can be transfered?

GF reported some issues with her installation tonight but it was over the phone so I didn't get a chance to see it myself. She says her resolution's off and it defaulted to the integrated GPU. She's attempted to download the latest nvidia drivers but she says they're not installing correctly, and prompts her to redownload them every time. Wish I could give more information. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Upgrading to Win 10 allows you to keep your settings, apps, and data without having to back them up (there is an option to select what to keep and what not to keep, or you can keep everything). I upgraded from 8.1 Pro and all my programs were still in tact afterwards with the exception of CPUID HW Monitor and CPU-Z having to be reinstalled.

Disable on-board/integrated video/GPU in the BIOS settings.

when should it ask for the key? when you reserve your upgrade or when you actually install the update?

If you have a genuine copy of Windows currently, the upgrade option will not ask for a key. A clean installation will though.

After having some solid time with it, I can honestly say 10 is a HUUUUGE improvement on 8.1. It actually feels like Windows again

Thank goodness. I was about to have a meltdown.

I had this issue with a system that had a 560Ti installed - open up the hardware manager and right click on the graphics card. Then update the driver via internet and it should work.

I've finally made the leap to W10 - However, I seem to have no sound. Anyone else having this issue?

I literally just went through this too. My fix was right click sound icon in task bar -> playback devices -> click "speakers" -> set as default.

My machine was treating the audio out like headphones for some reason and I couldn't hear anything. Good luck.

To dispel some rumors:

Currently, Windows 10 performs WORSE than both 8.1 and 7. It's not a significant margin, but everyone saying that 10 runs better is essentially wrong.

This article shows a bunch of benchmark, the aggregate for games is 8.1 > 7 > 10.
http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1460&page=12
EDIT, DISCARD THIS. I just noticed the article is very old. Still looking for actual comparisons on release version, since I can't find so many of them...

Other articles all reliably show worse Windows 10 performance on CPU physics tests.

On top of that boot times are very slightly longer, and memory footprint is similar to 8.1, but still larger, and so less optimized.

So, in all key areas: loading speed, memory footprint and game performance Windows 10 is simply worse that those preceding it.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the marginally worse performance across the board is due to all the tracking and spywork that Microsoft has layered on top of the OS.

Basically Windows 10 is Windows 8.1 plus a bunch of tracking/spy applications on top of it.

I wish the numbers showed at least some small improvements, instead of things getting worse. What's even the point?

I wouldn't be surpise if Windows 10 is slower. It seems to have more things running in the background which should require more resources, but that article was posted in 09.10.14. Windows 10 has probably changed a lot since then.

This article is very old, I'm almost certain I saw benchmarks where performance was 'slightly' better. Nothing really noticeable, basically the same as 8.

I tried to play Pillars of Eternity last night in windowed mode, boy was that a mistake. UT was running in 1280 x 720 @60. This caused my game to drop many frames, stutter and even freeze. I had to play in full screen 1920 x 1080. It worked flawlessly. Anyone else encounter any issues playing games windowed?

Yeah, my bad.

This one is recent and shows the issue on the CPU/physics side:
http://www.techspot.com/review/1042-windows-10-vs-windows-8-vs-windows-7/page2.html

Application performance also consistently lower on W10 compared to W7. It's ridiculous.

Looking at all the benchmarks, seems like a mix bag, sometimes faster and other times slower, but no huge differences. Windows 10 is the future and should improve more overtime, and thus, I don't see much of a reason to go back to 7 or 8.
