Upgrade to Windows 10?

PTGB40j.gif

I'm super into the Windows 1 logo.

1. For gaming a clean install is basically mandatory
2. It would be for the best to reserve and probably is the only way to get it officially without paying.

I don't think I clean installed, and this is my gaming pc. What happens for gaming when you don't clean install. I didn't want to redownload library and reconfigure stuff.

I think they're talking about how games can act strange sometimes if installed on a previous OS. I doubt it'll be a big deal a lot of the time but if you get any games that start crashing or acting really funky just reinstall that game.

Ah ok, I can deal with that. Thanks.

I don't agree with him. Upgrade option is fine. Clean installs used to be necessary a long time ago but not anymore.

Just want to be sure for tomorrow when I install Windows 10 what I have to do..is the best option to use the media creation tool and create an ISO image of windows 10? Will it make the ISO for me or would it upgrade first, I obviously want to do a clean install so I wont be upgrading just wiping the PC clean..I have Windows 8.1 home so I guess I can only have the home version on my PC and not the Pro Version?

Deleting the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download made the Reddit technique download even more than before (4+ GD vs ~2 last time) and it still failed with the 80240020 error.

Trying it a third time, now it's getting 6+ GB.

The upgrade tool doesn't give me the option for a clean install

It won't. You get that after you do the upgrade.

Do I have to claim the offer now for the free upgrade, or can I wait? Also, with it freak out if I switch motherboards in the future? I'm holding off until there's a surefire fix for DS4Windows not working.

I guess mandatory was kinda an exaggeration. It's mandatory for someone who wants to eliminate any possible performance damaging factors

Is that what I'm supposed to be seeing?

Oh wow, they must've just changed that. Mine just gave me that and says it's down. Huzzah.

Goodbye forever, Windows 8. I won't miss you. <3

So I'm upgraded and playing around with the new setup. I have a bunch of Steam games installed, but the Xbox app doesn't seem to detect them at all. My GOG games and my Origin install of Crysis 3 came up, but nothing from Steam. Anyone else have better luck?

Just finished upgrading on my Surface 3 (non-pro) and it's a real laggy experience. Gonna restart and see if that fixes it, but for now, I'm a little concerned.

Finally, an answer on the Win 10 key/clean install situation:
If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

I wonder if a usable key can be extracted from a full installation, though, like it is done on Windows XP/Vista/7/8 OEM installations.

No luck on either my laptop (never had the ready to install prompt, and apparently hadn't been updated for some time); nor my desktop. Tried the reddit trick only to get an error on the desktop. Retried the reddit trick and now both PC and Laptop are just checking for updates eternally. I'm assuming their servers are getting hammered. Guess I'll just try again in the morning.

I've been stuck on preparing for upgrade for 40 minutes or more.. I'm off to bed, I'll leave that in the background.. But I don't think things are going well. lol

I wonder if the fact I'm going through a Netflix DNS region switching service is keeping me from getting it in a timely manner?

I just have to ask this stupid question -

What happened to Windows "9"?????

Additional Details

We're working with our partners to make sure that Windows 10 is ready for your particular PC. When you get your notification, it means that
you can proceed with your upgrade.

Well, that's new. 😲

Looks like I am SOL for audio drivers until October 2015. Thanks Creative! =P Guess I'll try unofficial ones. Or maybe Windows 8 / 8.1 drivers will work.

They wanted the general public to think this is more than just a small step ahead of windows 8, which is unpopular. It's a psychological thing.

"Windows 10? I didn't like Windows 8...I think I can give this new one a shot again since they are on 10 now."

Just my theory ;)
