Upgrade to Windows 10?

?
I just have to ask this stupid question -

What happened to Windows "9"?????

Here is a good explanation
bored waiting for my update

http://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-review

Windows 10 is supposed to be that clarion call for change. Windows 10 is not just a new OS but an entire platform that very shortly will span PCs, laptops, tablets, wearable accessories, holographic computers and even the Xbox One.

Windows 10 is an OS for all things and all people. So says Microsoft. It is never actually finished either. Microsoft is making Windows a 'service' with constant upgrades, new features, and patches resulting in a more dynamic computing environment. Does it hold up? What does someone like me who liked Windows 8.1 a lot think about all the changes?
....

....referring to the convergence of computing around three screens -- the PC, the smartphone, and the television. This dream was not achieved in Windows 7, nor Windows 8. However, those were necessary steps to Windows 10 (Microsoft has skipped 'Windows 9' to convey this paradigm shift). Okay, there were missteps too. The core of Windows 10 is now applicable to servers, your home computer, and coming this year your smartphone, TV, and even the Microsoft Band wearable.

Assuming the world goes along with Microsoft, this change is a massive paradigm shift. Never have we seen an operating system that can live everywhere and be anything. Microsoft is attempting to transcend the home PC with a forward-looking OS that can be put on any computer no matter its size. Even the 'three screens' part is now outdated. Devices like HoloLens (holographic computer) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are devices that do not even have formal displays with a traditional graphical user interface (GUI). Windows 10 can run there too.

The beauty of this architecture is that if the traditional home PC as we know it dies (and it very well might) Microsoft's Windows will survive. Whether it is your tablet, athletic device, phone, gaming console or whatever comes next.

This introduction brings us to two major meta-level changes to Windows 10: Windows as a Service and Continuum....

Windows Forever

Windows 10 might as well be just called Windows. Version numbers are a conceptual device for demarcating upgrades. It no longer applies. Sure, we still need the '10' designation for other reasons. Try doing a web search for 'Windows' and you'll drown in a sea of vagary - but Windows 10 is the beginning of Windows as a Service (WaaS).

The phrase Windows as a Service is a bit misleading. For many, the word service implies punctuated monthly or yearly financial charges akin to Netflix or even Microsoft's own Office 365. However, this is not the case here. Assuming you have a PC or laptop with a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8 license key, Windows 10 is a free upgrade that will receive free upgrades for the life of the product.

I didn't restart, but I tried to change some setting and it kinda locked up for a bit. When it came back it was a lot better.

Cool Thanks

I guess I can't upgrade for whatever reason even though the tool shows I have no incompatibilities. I have no reason why.

So if I upgrade will my PS3 controllers still work? Seem to remember hearing something about the drivers not being 10 friendly. I use combination of motionjoy drivers and scp server.

Deleting the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download made the Reddit technique download even more than before (4+ GD vs ~2 last time) and it still failed with the 80240020 error.

Trying it a third time, now it's getting 6+ GB.

It won't. You get that after you do the upgrade.

Where is this available?

Deleted the folder, did the reddit trick, ended up redownloading and it still fails during install in windows update, I'm guessing this is still isn't ready here. (France).

It's pretty necessary for gaming. Driver leftovers and such.
What drivers? The only remnants of your previous OS are dumped into a windows.old folder you can remove.

GPU drivers automatically overwrite previous versions as well. Unless you guys also do a fresh install of your GPU drivers every time an update comes out...

So I just got this when trying to create USB bootable from the Media Tool.

What actually happened?

Hmm are you using it to try and upgrade the computer you are using now or make one to use elsewhere?

The file i downloaded was 30 Meg's and when you click the exe it asks if you want to upgrade this computer or make a usb. I clicked upgrade this computer and worked like a charm and kicked off the download and install. If you are upgrading the computer you are using just click upgrade this one

So uh, still not getting an upgrade option.

The Windows-BT folder is at 5.93GB and hasn't gone anywhere in awhile, any suggestions?

Try the media creator file I posted before. You don't need to use the other path. This forces the download. Just select upgrade this PC and don't bother making a usb.

I'm on a domain locked computer so the app never appeared for me. I just downloaded it directly from Microsoft using this link

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Worked like a charm and downloaded fast. Also didn't need the ISO. The tool just does it.

For everyone waiting or complaining just click that link and choose

Running the tool now, it asked if I wanted to upgrade current computer said yes and is now downloading and will install,
hopefully
Thx

No, we use driver cleaners for every update. And yes, some stuff may stick around for new Windows installations, and registry stuff too sticks around for driver updates. Clean installs feel nice, too, and that's not paranoia.

So clinging onto old habits due to being paranoid.

I don't even know how to reply to people online anymore

They're either defensive as soon as you don't agree with them or they just make assumptions

The OS can't even manage automatic GPU drivers without screwing things up, so to put blind trust into it in other aspects would seem foolish. There are plenty of "old habits" people should stick to in regards to Microsoft's operating systems. Perhaps they should stop giving us reasons to be "paranoid".

Stupid question but can I upgrade to Windows 10 if I'm only on Win 8?
I'd rather just go from Win8 ---> Win10 without having to download Win8.1 first.
Can I do that? Thanks.

just giving the "something happened" screen here as well... :/

If you get that screen choose make a bootable usb rather than upgrade this computer. That's one workaround that has worked for some.

I wonder if a lot of issues people are having is because they messed around and tried for force upgrade by messing with the hidden folder

I'm downloading and making a bootable USB. The download and verification process both worked fine, then I suddenly get a something happened error.

I didn't touch the hidden folder yet I still get the "Something happened" error.

Thank you sir. It's allowing me to download it now. It gave me the option to upgrade. Yay!

=D

Digging around a little bit it looks like the media creator gets confused when the hidden folder has stuff in it and then it wipes it and errors. It's not expecting the folder to exist I guess. What happens when you run it again?

So if I use that link to DL Windows 10, I'm assuming I'll need a product key at some point right? Will I be able to use it right away or should I wait until I get some kind of email with a product key (I reserved so I'm assuming I'm getting one at some point)?

It's allowing me to upgrade. It gives you the option. Go ahead and install the executable and give it a try. I'll update what happens once it's done downloading.

Otherwise you can wait until it drops into your notifications on your taskbar (bottom right of your screen).

Oh crap, should we delete that folder first?

Still gives the same error and it did erase stuff in the hidden folder. Shit I hope running it didn't screw up everything :/
