I posted about the same thing just above. I checked for the folder that has W10 downloaded and I seem to have it. I'm not sure if Windows is trying to update to 10 right now, or what.

- Welp ... pretty lame that this is the only way to get your copy.

You can just download the installer.

I don't know about disabling it, but I'm certain that you're not forced to use it.

Why do people need the start menu will always be beyond me. There's nothing I can't access from shortcuts or typing in the search.

This setting has been shown to have no effect on Win 10 (unless something has changed in the last 48 hours), but in the thread over in community there is a link to an MS KB patch that will let you block automatic driver installs from the new Windows Update.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed - I was able to select the nvidia driver from a list of new updates and Windows should no longer update it automatically.

How does the update from technical preview work? I installed the preview from a genuine 8.1 version. Now Windows update says Windows 10 home and activated. Does this mean I'm good to go? Some things still don't work though ( like the mail app)

Nope, install the upgrade first and make sure it's activated - THEN you can do a clean install and "skip" any prompts for a key until it's at the desktop and it will automatically be activated.

- You use your Windows 8.1 key to upgrade to Windows 10 which then upgrades your license key to a Windows 10 key.

Also, for all of you trying to force the update via the BT folder just don't. The ESD files (including the .wim) needed to create a checkpoint on your system if not properly hashed will cause more harm than good.

For a gamer , as grief.exe mentioned - likely would be a good idea to wait a bit - which i am going to be doing.

Ill be upgrading my surface pro to try out windows 10 but leaving my desktop on windows 8 for now.

That's always been true of OEM and system-builder keys. But I've found that if you call Microsoft and sort of play dumb, they'll give you an updated key for your new build.

What about retail keys? I have a retail copy of windows 7. If I ever change hardware I can call them and have the key activated on a different machine and deactivated on the old one right?

I had to call and reactivate windows when I got an SSD.
