Upgrading from window 8 > windows 8.1 > windows 10 is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
Just did this yesterday for my parents and hit zero issues.

Lucky. Windows Update is so fucked on the original windows 8. I just spent 2 hours trying to get the essential updates to download.Just did this yesterday for my parents and hit zero issues.

So for my gaming centric rig I should stay with 8.1 for a little longer right?
Hmmm my folder is smaller- 4.37 I believe.
Wait... is Windows 10 out?
Is upgrading from 7 to 10 a no brainer? Sounds like 8.1 would be best if you have it...
I wasn't talking about any of this. Windows updater just sucks so much. The problems people have with Win 8 are mostly subjective dislike of the Metro interface (Which I agree with). But it takes all of 5 minutes to fix that problem by bringing back the Start menu with free software. I'm running Win 8.1 on multiple PCs & its faster than Win7.
I'm also running Win 10 Insider on my .
It's not *really* out, but people who clicked the icon in their tray and used that to reserve Windows 10, are having it preloaded on their systems today. And since it is preloaded, if you know where to look you can manually run Setup to install it early.Wait... is Windows 10 out?
Why isn't windows 10 on my windows update list?

I'm upgrading regardless as I can't stand the win8.1 start menu. What a dumb idea.
Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps. The default, and what is called an in-place upgrade.
Keep personal files. A migration, in which Setup backs up your documents and other data, clean installs Windows, and then returns your documents and other data to their original locations.
(Keep) Nothing. A clean install, in which Setup erases your existing Windows install along with all of your settings, applications and data, and then installs a factory-fresh version of the Windows Technical Preview.
Wait... does Windows 10 not have Windows 8.1 style start menu? D:
I actually fell in love with it once I got 8.1 on my work laptop...
I'll be going for the "keep personal files" clean install option. Too many leftover bits of old installations I'd like to clean up.

Multiple desktops, multip... you mean I can make a desktop for games and another one for work ? Maybe it was possible before but that sounds pretty cool to me.
I'm on it and haven't run into issues on dota 2 or bf4.
If you're primarily playing modern games that already work on 7 or 8.1 you'll probably be fine.
Games that require work around like dark souls might be more iffy.
Make the jump.

If I can't play Dark Souls, then it's nothing but trash.
Why do people need the start menu will always be beyond me. There's nothing I can't access from shortcuts or typing in the search.
And then there's the taskbar.
It's good though that it's officially coming back.
Fear not. I played DS1 with DSFix and DS2 without issue.

How smooth is the upgrade process to 10? I'm going to be jumping straight from 7 to 10, anyone know if there will be issues with upgrading versus going the clean install route?
Just as a small disclaimer to those upgrading but my Xbox one controller is really wonky in Windows 10. It might just be me but I have to repair the driver constantly. I have been using the mayflash wii u controller since the Xbox controller keeps getting confused and mixes up buttons and thinks both triggers are the same input until I reinstall the driver
my 360 controller still technically works. Though my left stock has some drift but that could be the controller. Xbone controller is hopefully just me but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Another issue is when playing street fighter 4 it recognizes the controller as player 1 and 2 so I challenge my self when I press any buttonjesus now their own xbox one controllers start to go crazy with Win 10? anybody using their pc for gaming + using controller should wait for a fix .
