Upgrade to Windows 10?

So after the upgrade the drivera should mostly still be in place?

I went from 8.1 to 10 and only had to do that one thing, so I assume it will be a similarly easy transition for everyone else. Didn't break anything except Nvidia control panel, which I fixed with a clean install of the drivers.

I originally botched my update because of something like that. Plugged in another monitor, disabled SLI, did the forced update and it worked.

I can't even get into settings for it. It doesn't recognize that it's there even though dual monitor support is still working. I don't get it either.

EDIT:
Having restarted Windows, it's doing updates, yet has been stuck at 32% for a couple of minutes. UGH. Damnit to hell MS and Nvidia.

My god this thing is so sweet on my surface 3.

It is the best OS I've ever used and thats in two hours

Hope it holds up as well when I get it on my desktop

Yeah this is working exceedingly well on my Surface 3 as well. The touch features even feel better.

The only thing I don't like is I had to clean shop of all the useless apps and notifications. They access the internet way too often and the Surface 3 just doesn't need all of that going on with an Atom processor.

So MGS GZ doesnt work for the upgrade so far but pretty much the only other thing that bugged out was xcom, just re-validated the files in steam and that made it work again but didnt fix MGS GZ.

Dam. I went and deleted everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution instead of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\download and now windows update doesn't work at all.

wuauclt.exe /updatenow

That command also does nothing for me.

I think I done messed up :(

Sorry for these potentially stupid questions,

Ihave the update downloading now.

1. To do a clean install do i have to use an ISO or can it be done using the windows 10 update options?

2. If im using an ISO how do i delete existing OS and files? through initial setup in Bios?

3. If im using an ISO will i need to also download essential MOBO, GPU drivers too? ( reason i ask that is when i initially setup my pc i had problems connecting to internet until i downloaded MSI killer network drivers from another PC)

Right, installed now after the refresh.
It uh.. Seems to have not deleted my old files though, as I only have 200 GB of my hdd left, which is what I had on it before I did the "clean" install.

After reading the Microsoft FAQ about the upgrade I think ist like this:

You do the upgrade, get a win 10 license. However if you reinstall Windows 10 you do not Need (or it is not possible) to use your key for authentification.
Your Windows 10 license is tied to your Hardware. So if you reinstall (10), it recognises your Hardware and checks online whether this Hardware has a win 10 license.
Sadly I did not find any Information about what happens if you reinstall win 7 and try to activate it with your key :(

So if I do a new build/upgrade components, I have to buy a new Windows licence?!

I was very cynical about upgrading from Windows 7, especially after Win8.

So the biggest compliment I can give after 45 minutes or so trying out Win10 is that I'm completely at ease. It seems snappy and all of my previous programs are working fine.

Saying that, I've had to re-download Kaspersky. No biggie.

Are you running the tool to download Win 10?
I'm using it and that folder appeared after I started to download, while BT reached 0 mb size.
Ah, that explains it.

Yeah, I did use the Media Creation Tool to burn a disk/ISO of it. It ate up 10 GB of space alone, and I was intending to go for the Windows Update route.

I have Windows 10 installed. It was very easy.

I want to do a fresh install on my new SSD. My old computer that the OEM license came with does not have my Windows 8 key on the case. Is there another way I can find out what my key is?

Does nothing for me either.

I may try the media creation tool. I knew this wouldn't go smooth.

I did a clean install of windows 10 and I'm still having trouble with the Nvidia drivers. This time I let windows update do everything, and it says I'm on version 353.62 on the NVidia control panel, but it's not detecting my second GPU at all.

Do a restart. I'm like 3 steps ahead of you.

finally finished updating. everything is in working order. no incompatible apps. everything much faster. not a fresh install, just an upgrade.

windows 8.1 to windows 10.

The 'connect' option in the Xbox app doesn't show up so I can't do Xbox One streaming, has anyone else run into this problem?

How many files do you have in the Windows BT Folder with Windows 7 Home?

I`m at 17008. Yesterday "Loading" had 17300. It didnt download anything new since yesterday.

I keep getting an error when I do this method guess might have to wait a while for my upgrade.

You probably have corrupted and/or missing install files. You need to delete all files in: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Then, run the cmd again. It's going to redownload everything again.

Thing is i haven't downloaded anything yet, I did also delete everything from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download but one file just doesn't delete

The media tool is so easy to use, I don't know why people are still trying the other method.

It worked for me and I didn't even reserve windows 10.

I really wish we had a dedicated OT for upgrading to Windows 10. Haven't reserved an upgrade and I currently have no idea where to start.

Apparently they're "validating Windows 10 for your PC".

Is there anyway to download it anyway, I can't really be bothered to wait for them to do all that...

I got it to work. Win10 is pretty cool so far. Some games aren't working, which I am trying to mess with and see if it's Win10 or not.

Indeed, the other method doesn't work if you're in a country where they didn't roll Windows 10 it seems. I mean I must have download over 30GB of Windows 10 trying to get it right.

Upgrade tool is downloading now, will see how it goes.

I am liking Windows 10 but also didn't have any issues with 8. Didn't see what all the fuss was about. Don't like tiles..... Don't use tiles, that wasn't hard.

I am though having trouble on Parallels, the performance in a VM is wonky at best, 8 is buttery smooth. Not a Windows issue, likely just need to upgrade parallels, just odd that it's visual performance is struggling so much when it doesn't differ to much from 8.
