Upgrade to Windows 10?

Anyone else having issues with snapping Google Chrome tabs? When I snap a tab to either side of the screen, after the first couple of times I do it, The content of the tab appears to freeze and I am no longer able to interact with it. I'm using a Surface Pro 3 with an upgrade install, for what it's worth.

Did some initial testing of the first page of my installed steam games.

Win 10 testing (AMD 270x Video Card):

Banner Saga - Fine
Van Helsing II - Fine
Pillars of Eternity - Fine
Bridge Project - Fine
Alien Isolation - Fine
Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate - Something wonky going on with resolutions, 1920*1080 missing in fullscreen. Worked fine before.
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - Fine
Third Eye Crime - Fine
Titan Attacks - Windowed mode very sensitive to the mouse pointer going out of bounds. Probably always like that.
Fist of Jesus - Fine
Back to the Future (Telltale) - Fine
Gemini Rue - Fine
Gods Will be Watching - Fine
Walking Dead Season 2 - Fine
Why Am I Dead at Sea - Fine
BIT.TRIP Flux - Fine
Runespell Overture - Fine
Castle: Never Judge a Book by its Cover - Fine

Happy so far.

My experience was mostly painless. I updated, keeping all my programs. Then I did a clean install with the USB boot on my new SSD. I had to enter my old OEM Windows 8 key during set up. I did not see an option to skip that step. From what I've read, you need to upgrade to 10 before your 7 and 8 keys transfer over to 10. So update first, then clean install, and have your key handy.

Update worked flawlessly, but sadly my custom settings in the NVIDIA drivers didn't survive it. Oh well, that's like 5min of work. Since I didn't install anything myself I'll have to check if Windows10 actually installed new drivers or if I still am on Win8.1 drivers.

Cortana is pretty nice, starting games just by telling cortana to do it is really fun.

Games I've tested are all working fine. Witcher 3 runs as well as it did in Windows 7 if not better.

Bioshock Infinite was perfect.
Vanishing of Ethan Carter..perfect.
Alien Isolation...perfect.

I even ran "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" via GOG Galaxy in Dosbox and had no issues at all.

I'm really happy with this so far!

Only real issues I had was the Nvidia Control Panel not working, and my screen resolution being off. Everything is pretty solid so far.

Double check, it may be windows update stealthy "updating" your video card drivers to MS own version which breaks tons of things. There is already outcry out there with MS force updating drivers with Windows update (on previous win versions drivers were optional on the win update screen, but now are forced). I noticed it was doing this to me until I used Display driver uninstaller utility (DDU) to clean uninstall (the utility forces win 10 to not install its own drivers and leave the one you downloaded from nvidia or AMD). This really needs to be fixed soon.

Edit: Anyone having issues with their video cards, check the windows update page and also the drivers build. Win 10 seems to be "updating" drivers to their own breaking drivers downloaded from AMD or nvidia unless deactivating that function using DDU. It was doing it to me and its easy to miss unless you check the drivers build # (not the advertises driver ver like "catalyst 15.7.1 or nvidia 353.xx" but the internal build, check and compare with your video card manufacturer.

someones gonna tell her to search for porn i just know it

I tried The Witcher 3 before/after upgrade. Lost exactly 1fps (and the other driver was 1.5 month old, so no optimizations happened).

So, Windows 10 is basically exactly 8.1, absolutely nothing changes. Performance is exactly the same and the OS behaves just the same, with a similar install size.

More like W8.2.

I did the same thing but luckily have no such problem
Are you actually using one those apps that may cause the problem like mentioned in the links or just the default apps from Windows?

The only app I added to the default configuration was Netflix, but uninstalling it didn't seem to help at all. What did make a difference was changing the power settings in the control panel. "Balanced" results in much less CPU trashing than "High Performance." The interesting thing though is that I've configured both plans exactly the same, so there shouldn't be any discrepancies. But since there certainly are, am I allowed to conclude I'm dealing with a bug or two here? :P

That issue with Windows breaking the driver was already fixed. The latest driver (which is ahead of what W10 provides) is 363.62 aka the official "GeForce Windows 10 Driver".

So still at this and constant Upgrade Fails. My primary issue is once its done installing, it auto restarts my computer but doesn't boot up after. My tv just hangs with a No Input message. If I wait nothing happens, if I restart the comp it rolls back the install and says it failed.

Ive done the install through the actual windows Update by manually forcing it with the wuauclt.exe /updatenow in the cmd prompt, and it just does the same thing. Anybody have any suggestions?

I love the game streaming feature. Played some Geometry Wars and FIFA and the performance was great. I feel like I have a second Xbox One in my office now.

For nvidia may be but for AMD for me keeps downloading drivers that are not the ones posted by amd and it has not been fixed, in the regard that it may not do it again in the future downloading driver versions that are not the ones posted by your manufacturer. The forced driver upgrade is still in place and not like prev windows versions where drivers were optional. If I were you, always keep an eye its not downloading other drivers (and for other components too). Unless you use DDU to force disable that crap.

Okay...I went through the Media Creation Tool process. Everything there went very smoothly. It went through all the prompts, started installing Windows 10 and I don't know what percentage it got to but it was over 75%, and the system had to restart. Well, while it was doing that I went out to the kitchen to get something to drink. I came back and it was on the Gigabyte splash screen saying something about "boot failure". So I had it just reboot the computer and...now I'm just back in Windows 8.1, like nothing ever happened.

What happened? Am I able to resume installation somehow? It's so bizarre.

I hate dealing and looking for solutions to these sorts of problem, if I were you I'd re-install Windows ;p

Does anybody have any tips to optimize their Windows 10 system for faster startups?

1. SSD
2. Clean up autostart.

An SSD speeds up EVERYTHING while removing programs from autostart simply make the boot faster by having fewer programs to load when booting.

Let's see.....

You're using a TV right? It might not detect whatever the resolution reverts to in that case, which would explain the blackscreen. You'd just have to let it sit there for a good while and install.

Best bet though is usually to give this a try, since upgrading through Windows Update gives people the most issues. Can be done by the program itself or by making an DVD or USB stick.

So I'm having trouble getting my Asus Transformer to update. I'm leaning towards severe lack of space on the internal flash storage. I had freed up 6.5GB but after another failed attempt, I only have 2GB left. & it went so much smother on the desktop.

I don't know about you guys, but I am absolutely loving the new tile system. As soon as you take advantage of it, you'll never be able to live without it.

I just unpinned all of the default tiles (most of them were useless to me anyways) and started adding my own. Here's what I have so far:

aCvO1Cn.png

This wasn't really possible in older versions of Windows, because pinning programs to the Start menu just resulted in them being listed from top to bottom in a very unorganized fashion. With the tile system, on the other hand, you can place pinned programs into groups, customize the names of said groups, and even determine how and where they appear in those groups.

Still having issues with networking related drivers and crap on one of my PCs. Trying to do anytime related to networks bogs everything down to a halt. Even wired ethernet.

I want to do a "reset" to get to a cleaner Windows 10 state. But in case that doesn't help I don't want to post my ability to revert to Win7. Does anyone know if the "revert to Windows 7/8.1" option vanishes after a reset"?

ya I just finishing burning an ISO gonna try it, if it doesnt work, I'll end up grabbing my monitor from downstairs and do it in the morning lol. terrible :(

Guys, instead of letting W8 or 7 update through Windows Update why don't you simply load the ISO on a USB stick and launch the update manually?

This is the direct link for x64: http://software-download.microsoft....1438243344&h=db70cfb1bd17a2a975af81a7f4102a86

(I think direct links only last 24 hours or so, then you need to do on your own: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Then use Rufus to load the ISO onto a USB stick: https://rufus.akeo.ie/ (the program allows to use USB with GPT instead of MBR, to install with UEFI support)

Then simply start the update while you're logged in your current Windows install.

Everything running smoothly on Windows 10 except I got hit with the high clock & temperature bug when 144Hz is on.

Running 2 displays, and SLI, and the first card never idles back to 135mhz as usual, it stays at 899mhz now and with temps around 60°C while it used to be around 40°C...
I'm aware Nvidia said it's running as designed but it's bullshit as I didn't experience the issue with the previous drivers (I think it was the hotfix drivers before the 353.49) and using the exact same setup.

I've been looking for a fix like mad, it's fucking annoying. Running the desktop at 120hz fixes the issue but then I'm not running at max refresh rate and you can somewhat feel the difference even on desktop.

Anyone running into the same issue?

I upgraded normally through bootcamp, if fellow Mac users were wondering if it works. There were some issues with the res (max was 1920x1440 instead of 2560x1440). Bluetooth keyboard is working, I haven't restarted yet to see if I can get the media buttons to work.

smooth upgrade on 3 pc's, keep in mind, my laptop is from the stone age and runs the new windows like a champ

i used the tool kit on 2 of them to burn an iso on dvd cause it didnt give to go ahead from that taskbar icon

Successfully upgraded on a cracked version of Windows 7 due to my OEM key being missing for years now. Can't believe how smoothly the upgrade went - everything is working just how it was a few hours ago. Quite like the tiling system.

nvidia came out with a windows 10 driver, i had the same problem when it booted up for the first time but them i installed the new driver and everything was normal

Okay, new problem that's pretty big. Foobar is chugging on FLAC files occasionally while the rest of the system runs fine. Any known compatible issues? I'm running audio through HDMI and video through VGA.

Just tested a few huge FLAC files on Winamp and they played fine. I don't have foobar to test though.

So, I had no problems installing, but I have no internet access via ethernet. Before hand, I backed up an image, optimized my boot drive, and updated my mobo drivers, including the network (MSI Gaming 5 mobo, Killer Network driver). Everything worked just like before, so I upgraded, and now I'm at this current issue.

Reinstall your motherboard's ethernet driver? You updating your drivers before upgrading to Win10 doesn't really help since Win10 needs specific drivers. Here's the current one for your motherboard: http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-5.html#down-driver&Win10 64

Thanks! Yes, it seems to be a fairly common problem, though one I've never had before with previous versions of Windows, or with any of the Windows 10 preview builds. I'm using FileMonitor to try and pinpoint what's triggering it, but haven't found anything so far. I'm also uninstalling every Metro app I can find hoping to find the culprit. In any case, I'll continue working on it, and will update my post once I find a solution.
I already tried uninstalling every optional Metro app that I could. Before that, I disabled all live tiles. I removed all pinned apps from showing in Start. It has not worked.

I sat and watched task manager after a reboot. I did literally nothing and sure enough after a few minutes, Runtime Broker shot way up in CPU usage. Didn't have this during the preview, which was an upgrade from 8.1. This is now happening on a fresh format and fresh install that I did about 24 hours ago now. It's driving me nuts.

I wish you luck on this. I'll check back a few times before I go ahead and reformat again.

So whats the deal with the my games section of the xbox menu? They didn't somehow retroactively add achievements to multiplatform games right?

i7-4790k, 980ti.

Upgrade from Win 8.1 went fine (actually started the download and install from a MacBook Pro via Remote Desktop!), Nvidia driver took two attempts to install, post-upgrade.

Ultra SFIV works just fine, with my Mad Catz SFIV Tournament Fightstick no less!

Plugged in an Xbox One controller, tested out the game streaming stuff. Video is definitely not as great as local, but works well.

Here's a few more games I test on my i5-2500k, 7850 2GB, Win 10 Pro setup. Everything seems to be working great, I'll test some more tomorrow.

CSGO definitely has an fps difference. I used to be on Win7 getting 300-500fps, on Win10 I get 200-400 with 100+ ping in every server.

Though it's probably all the garbage that is forced on in Win10. So many pointless processes eating resources. That's Microsoft for you though!

hey Gaf, havent got my DL for Windows 10 yet but i got a question.

i have a install of win 7 on my first hdd, i wanted to install Win 10 on another drive. i know theres that tool to put the Win 10 install on a flash drive and im hearing that you gotta upgrade to install other places. is there a way i can keep my win 7 install while having win 8 on a diffrent drive? i do plan on giving up my key for Win 10, i just dont wanna lose all my stuff.
