Upgrade to Windows 10?

Reading this thread I feel I must have got very luckily to have got Windows 10 installed on 3 machines with no problem!

I was going to complain about not being able to update (yet). The updater appears stuck with a "Please wait" message. Reading the thread, I think I'll stay with W7 for a good while yet.

Please continue to beta test, though. :D

It seems like the wrong one, but I can't remember what's it's supposed to be. Installing realtek now

Hope you properly uninstalled the old sound driver before :P

But yeah realtek is a safe bet, most motherboards use their chips for onboard sound. If that also doesn't work you'll need to read the manual of your motherboard to see what chip exactly is used, searching for "chip name + sound driver" should net you results.

I updated my secondary PC. All went smoothly, thankfully, and the most difficult part was instigating an update in the first place. The nVidia drivers seem okay and I haven't come across anything serious, albeit in my very brief use of the operating system.

I haven't followed much about Windows 10 so I stupidly thought that the separate desktops would also allow for different icons on them
unless it does and I am an idiot who missed something obvious.
.

I´m using Windows 10 since the beginning of the WIN10 Insider program and I never had any bigger problems and I really thought this could be a working OS on the release day , so it´s kinda sad to read that it´s not working for some of you

On my 4 year old laptop, Windows 10 preview worked just fine. I thought the same thing. Upon doing the upgrade, I ran into some of the weirdest problems. Even problems where my wifi connection strength was stuck at a 1 bar with a significant slower speed. Reinstalled my drivers, same problems. Upon uninstalling Windows 10 to wait for them to fix their bugs, everything went back to normal.

I'd say the roll back feature has been my favorite part. Not in a sarcastic way. It's cool you can revert back if you're having problems until they get addressed.

Did anyone have any hick-ups with Razer Synapse? Mine kept loading constantly.

Installed it and so far seems to run fine and the installation went smoothly.

Just some annoyance I can't figure out how to solve: How can I stop Windows from adding random links to the quick access list when you open the explorer?
I prefer to only have some manually selected folders listed there that I actually need regularly. Like the favourites under Windows 7.

And how can I increase the quality of the wallpaper? I use the same as I had with Windows 7 but now it looks like it's converted to a really badly compressed jpeg.
I read saving it as a higher quality jpeg manually instead of using png as a solution but that's what I already did and it still looks bad.

By default the the icons on the desktop are wastefully spread out. Not sure what's the point of this. Seems like the registry is the only way to fix this (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowsMetrics -> IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing if you need). At least that was something I could fix.

And last night I woke up because my PC suddenly started. Seems like some maintenance/update that Windows had planned but I don't have a very deep sleep and my dog was startled as well. I don't like this.

Installed it earlier today, although not thru the reserve dealie. Seems good. I dig the more cell phoneish approach to notifications. I just wish I could pull in all my Google apps data, instead of them forcing the OneNote/OneDrive Microsoft ecosystem nonsense. I would use alot of the Start menu, live tile things. Cortana was IMMEDIATELY deactivated. Stop getting to know me, Halo-lady...

The upgrade went really smooth for me. Looking forward to hearing about any potential performance boosts in games.

I didn't do any game comparisons, but I do get better scores in SLI benchmarks.

WIndows 7 Firestrike ultra

Windows 10 Firestrike ultra

Better SLI scaling I guess.

Can you do a single card test?

I only have time to test once last night before going to bed but i got a worse score. Not really promising. Haha.

Ok after a day with windows 10 I had the following issues.

The steam ui was really unresponsive when it was first starting by booting up the PC. Closing Steam and starting it again solved the issues. After that i switched to the steam beta client it seems to be fine even when first starting steam.

The ethernet drivers had to be manually updated by downloading them from broadcom site because I was losing internet connection when starting games.

Everything else seems to be fine. Inputmapper also works for the DS4. Tested it with Dishonered, Castle Crashers, Risk of Rain.

Can't complain about Windows 10 at all... although not given gaming a proper go yet.

I installed 2 new Intel 730 series SSD's in RAID, then installed Windows 10 onto those, it's damn quick to boot (11 secs) and I like the overall aesthetic... except for the over abundance of white (especially at the top of apps/programs) but there's a way to change that now so can't wait to do that.

I gave Minecraft slight enhanced pocket edition Windows 10 Edition a go which runs extremely well compared to the normal Java version of Minecraft. It's interface is very much that of the Pocket Edition version, but works well with Mouse and Keyboard as well as with a Controller. There's no real 'graphics' options or keyboard rebinding at all so hopefully they add those.

Using an Xbox 360 controller to play my Xbox One via streaming was a real "woah" moment for me.

I need to give this a go - I hope latency isn't an issue. The idea of streaming from the Xbox One to my PC seems amazing, also wouldn't you livestream super easily like that? Just screen/window capture in OBS and it'd be pretty good quality.

Latency doesn't appear to be an issue because it's constantly scaling the resolution to match network conditions. This is a bit annoying in itself, but clearly preferable to lag.

Upgrade deleted some programs for me

- Opera
- Open Office
- Thunderbird
- Uplay

I did an Upgrade, no clean install and all these programs were on the same drive as windows. Normal?

Edit: Just noticed, Nvidia Drivers and everything related is wiped too.

Goodbye Chrome.

Hello Windows 10 and Edge browser.
I wish I could, it actually looks minimal and feels snappy. Just no extension support yet :(

Pro tip: You can stream remotely!

You can put your Xbox in your DMZ on your router (hungover, can't be bothered to figure out the ports yet, not standard XBL) and you can connect to it remotely! I tested it locally by tethering to my phone on 4G and it worked without a hitch. Just get your public IP and in the app, click "add a device" and put your IP in.

My Thunderbird upgraded just fine, all extensions and settings saved as well.

Does the windows 10 media upgrade tool check the license before it completes the upgrade? Its all ready to go on my PC but i'm not sure about the license as I bought it of ebay and didn't know a lot of them were dodgy at the time!

Are you using the license currently on your PC? If so, just hit "skip" when it asks for a license. In fact, I don't see why you'd enter a key there unless you bought Windows 10 for some reason.

Anybody figured out how to use Cortana to run launch programs like Word?

I say "launch Microsoft Word" and all I get is the results of a google search on "Launch Microsoft Word".

Recognizes the DS4 as an Xbox controller and all that jazz? It's the only thing keeping me from upgrading right now, don't want to lose the functionality of the best controller I own

Windows 10 has been a nightmare so far, I'm having serious issues with the audio. For some reason no matter what I set the system audio levels to, it'll just randomly decide to jack everything up to 100% volume (but still report the correct levels) while I'm watching a video or something. Moving the volume slider even 1% fixes it, but having to rush and tab out to the volume control every time it decides to murder my eardrums is not on. And yes, I did update the Realtek drivers, it made no difference.

Another annoying issue is how auto-hide taskbar will randomly decide to stop working and lock itself at the bottom of the screen, obscuring stuff I need to click. Restarting the PC seems to be the only way around it so far.

Alright guys!

I am a PC gamer, that is why I own and use my PC everyday, gaming..... I've been on Windows 7 since release, and I love it, it's going to be hard to let go....really hard actually. I feel so comfortable and safe here, I know every little tweak and all the corners of the OS like the back of my own hand.

I'm hearing great things about Windows 10, and I'm ready to take the plunge.... the thing is, is there any benefit to do so right now? dx12 games probably won't be out for a while... and it seems there are some compatibility issues at the moment....

I just want to avoid any headache, and figured waiting a few months might be better, no?

Thanks it worked! I guess the magic word is "Open", I tried "run", "launch" and "start" and none of it worked.

Yeah it's pretty odd. I was hoping that they'd integrate the speech control features already present in Windows into Cortana, but I guess we'll have to wait. Cortana's development throughout the insider program has been really odd. She's a lot better now, but I think we've lost some features such as opening playlists, although opening songs by title still works.

Nah. Reminds me of PS4 launch, just get it if you want something new/shiny. There's nothing worth upgrading for right now and I kinda wish I stayed on 7 longer.

Is there any way to fully disable Cortana? I'm never gonna use this trash and I'd rather it not use mah resources.

What, why would you ever remove that? That's literally the first thing I tried D:

I reverted back to 8.1, lol. I was not happy with my performance in The Witcher 3, and I want to continue my Shenmue play-thru on NullDC which I couldn't seem to get working on 10. Roll-back was pretty smooth at-least with the exception of Chrome. Spent way too much fucking time troubleshooting that shit, was really getting me heated. Think I'll try again in a few weeks, maybe try a clean install next-time.

Yes. Dishonered without input mapper doesnt work at all. With it you get xbox button promts. The touchpad moves the mousecourser, share is the back button and options is start.

I played through Shenmue I just fine on NullDC and Demul works as well.

Everything looks weird. Like a bit grainy or compressed or something. Going through some screenshots I took in games and none of them look crisp. And it goes for just about everything. Something is off.

I also cant get everything the size I want. Icons are either too small, or I can make them a better size, but then text is too big. Really annoying.

Also, Edge brought back the annoying as fuck scroll bar that has a light gray background with the location indicator just minutely darker, so I have to stick my face up to the screen to see where it is sometimes. There was a script I could use previously to help this in Windows Explorer, but I'm guessing it might not work for an entirely new browser. Really hope it does cuz it fucking sucks.

I couldn't download my Nvidia driver through Windows. Couldn't install it manually, either. Had to download GeForce Experience and then install it through there.

Audio was working, but my Asus Xonar Station wouldn't open until I redownloaded some hack audio drivers for it(what the hell?). Also, I couldn't find the audio settings anywhere. Absolutely anywhere. I had to manually type it in to find it, which is bullshit. Shit shouldn't hidden away where I cant easily find it through a menu. There was nothing wrong with Control Panel, for christ's sake.

It's fast, though. But overall, first impressions are not good. I know a new OS sometimes takes some getting used to, but I need to figure out why everything looks off. If I cant, I'm gonna have to go back to Windows 7 and I *really* don't want to.

EDIT: Restarting seems to have cleared up the lack of clarity for the most part, I think.
