Upgrade to Windows 10?

GeForce Experience seems like doesn't work in W10. Hope they update it fast enough. I like me my Shadowplay.

Removing GeForce Experience that was installed with the driver and then doing the stand-alone installer for it seemed to resolve the issues I had with it not opening. I was able to record footage of my Rocket League sessions last night with Shadowplay on 10.

EDIT: Forgot about stopping the services, but the link ZalXII posted above was how I got it resolved with the exception of running the GeForce Experience installer instead of re-installing the entire driver.

If hard drive is 100% usage, it's going to make your computer slow, especially if the OS is on it. Googling seems to show many possible issues. Since its a fresh install, just do reinstall again.

I already did. It started well, but after a coulple of hours it was again the same thing.. By reinstall you mean using the ISO again? I did it like 3 times.

Did the installer from the website, and everything is going fairly smoothly.

I am having an issue where sometimes when I open a program I get a full screen distorted image for a fraction of a second before it opens. This is on a 144hz gsync display. Everything is set correctly in the menus. Anyone else having an issue similar to this?

why do you have UAC off? it works fine post-vista

I had to disable it around the time I got Win 8.1 to mess around with some stuff (can't really remember what exactly lol) and I got so used to not getting annoying notifications about me launching stuff I just left it disabled.

Guess I'll enable it again. I want to look at my terrible pictures.

So I was just chatting with MS support. I was asking what happened in the future if I do some hardware upgrades on my PC (since windows 10 activates based on hardware configuration). She told me I would have to purchase a a copy of windows 10...

Anyone have any thoughts on why my GPU is idling at 50% usage on desktop? I've tried closing every program in my taskbar, still no avail. Nvidia GTX 980 Ti, newest drivers.

Yeah so you get upgraded to an OEM version even if you had the full thing.

Define "works", because UAC never did anything useful for me except tell me that im launching an exe that i want to launch. It worked in 7 because you could turn it off without messing up elevated commands, but in 8 and 10 its broken again.

You're disabling it entirely or just turning the popups off?

because apps work fine for me w/ this setting, as do executables that require admin privileges

(I use the option one level up though, to popup but not dim etc)

Completely off. I have had problems with a few programs still requiring right click run as admin before working properly (OpenVPN is one of them). That shouldnt be required as in 7 with UAC off.

Are you sure you rebooted after trying the lowest setting? Cause I had it at that, and had to raise it one level up AND reboot to get the apps to work.

Thanks. Now it works!

10 is taking longer to boot up for me. I get a black screen (can still see my mouse cursor) after the blue Windows logo. This lasts maybe 10-15 seconds. Logging in feels longer and once I'm in the computer is really sluggish for a couple minutes.

8.1 just feel much faster and smoother.

Think I'm gonna use this as an excuse to finally get an SSD and do a clean install.

If you already fresh install Windows 3 times, it would rule out bad Windows install. Possibly corruptied HDD and driver issues. I would try googling for similar issues and possible solutions. There will probably be few, if any for 10, but some from 8 could still applicable.

I had one uac warning, set it to something other than never notify. Rebooted. Set it back to never notify. Haven't had issues since.

So I tried the forced method mentioned earlier in here and it wiped out the 1.5gbish files that were in the download folder, I ran the prompt as Admin and it filled the folder back up with about 90mb of files and now there's nothing happening. The post said to check your Windows Update in Control Panel to see if stuff is downloading but I'm not seeing this anywhere.

Any ideas how to progress or is it just stuck? Been about 20 mins now.

It's stuck, I had that issue many, many times. Turn off Windows updates entirely, disconnect from the internet and then delete the entire hidden Windows BT folder and all files in that Download folder. After that reboot, turn automatic updates back on and then reconnect to the internet. Depending on how it got stuck you could probably skip some steps, but I had issues where if I just deleted the files and restarted the download it'd get stuck again, having a clean reboot with no files and no attempts from Windows to start the update again fixed it.

You're welcome :D

Be warned though: Depending on what resolution you choose to downsample from it'll chew away at your resources mercilessly. Depending on your rig you'll have to do with 1440p for newer games (or not even that), but many games from ~2013 and just about any older game will run in 4K flawlessly even on mid-tier cards (GTX 770, for example) and get a huge boost in Image Quality.

I'm using a 980ti. The way I was downsampling before only allowed me to go to 1440p. This DSR opens up so many possibilities!

Looks like it's there for me:

Weird, my only option is "display". The card is working perfectly.

Yeah i have it at lowest, the modern app splash screen opens then it dies. It wont work unless its above the lowest one.

If you create an admin account, it also wont work.

10 is taking longer to start up for me. Takes longer to get to log in, logging in takes longer, and the computer is sluggish for about a minute or two after logging in.

8.1 wasn't FAST (i'm on a 7200rpm hd after all) but wasn't this slow.

Think I'm gonna just use this as an excuse to finally buy an SSD.

My upgrade was slower than 7, but fresh install is faster or equivalent.

If your os prior to win 10 was oem, yes if you upgrade the mobo i believe then you will need to buy win 10 outright. If your os was full retail then your license transfers to the new hw, change what you like and it will still work and you own win 10. This was detailed in the official ms win 10 faq, il try and dig out the link.

I've seen the 100% disk issue on a couple machines and in both cases the hard drives were failing. The OS is probably trying to use a portion of the drive that was not used under the old OS and may have trouble with lots of error corrects or relocating sectors. In my cases, replacing the hard drive was the only thing that caused it to go away permanently.

I've tried that tweak, but it only seems to work for folders, not the drive itself. I may have found a way to take full ownership of the drive though. There's no longer an Owner tab in advanced security, but it's now a small word you can click. Still, trying that out.

I really, really don't want to do a reinstall. The DOA5 issue seems to be with the game and not the OS, as other people are having the issue as well in Win 10 and DOA5 is the only game with the issue. As for Thunderbird, it's still easily accessible and I'm ok with that.

Clean install isnt going to fix it, the permissions are inherited from the drive by the OS, the OS is not forcing permissions on it. I had many problems with migrating my data drives from 7 to 8, an on 10 its better but only because i kept the same computer login names. When the login names change its messes up, atleast in 8.1 it did. Since the permission system hasnt changed in 10, its probably the same thing.

Yeah do you have the link? I had a full boxed retail version of windows 7.

3DMark showing very slightly lower results except for physics being slightly better while using the same overclock I did in Windows 8

I'm at the lowest setting from the start (immediately changed it to that) and I can use all and run all apps without problems.
Geforce Experience running well too.

For me the OS is pretty much on point, but Nvidia gotta move their ass and release some good drivers.

How are people liking Edge browser? I think im done with IE finally

MS has been done with IE for like 4 years now, so that's a good choice :). It's still not as good as chrome in functionality, but it's great in speed. They really need to figure out a way to sort/organize favourites better. Bit of a mess now.

Well, I can't seem to disable the incredibly loud system sounds, but at least my DNS problem was fixed with Windows 10! I had super long DNS lookup times for the longest time on 8.1, took 5-10 seconds of waiting before the browser started even loading a site usually. Absolutely no idea what caused it but whatever, apparently it's fixed now. Yay!

Also, how do I change my keyboard default layout? Seems to default to US, I have to change it back to FIN with Win+Space now and then which will surely get annoying

Huh, that's weird. Mine kept saying I have to enable UAC.

Erm...8.1 was always superior to 7.

The 8.1 UI is atrocious. Talk about 2 different operating systems. The under the hood enhancements of 8.1 still weren't enough for me to make up for Metro. It looks like 10 merged them well enough though, but it's not a good idea to bite into a new OS on release. Take a look at

MS comes out with a decent OS, then a dud OS, then it takes a service pack or two to make the decent OS great.

Does anyone know how to copy bookmarks from chrome to Edge? It only gave me the option for IE. Would love to get all my bookmarks onto edge too. Might actually decide to use it more then when I am in the need, the need for speed.

Yes I agree, IE favorites wentnto shit, you cant click and drag anymore either or at least I cant. Have to go to organize folders section

Can barely see the scroll button. No 'Save Target As' right-click option. Favorites now list the full URL underneath, taking up a bunch of useless space so where before, I could have everything sitting there at a glance, now I have to scroll through. Many settings options from before are gone. Navigation bar is too big.

It's fast and I love the dark theme, but otherwise, I don't really like it. I was a long-time IE user, but I'm probably gonna have to switch now. You may feel differently, so don't take my word for it. I see many people who seem to like it, so I guess I just have different priorities.

After playing Rocket League on PS4 for a while, I decided to support the developers and buy it on PC. It was a completely unplayable chugging mess on Windows 7 unless I put it at horrendous-looking minimum settings. My PC is very old at this point, so I knew this would happen eventually and began speccing out a new machine. But after upgrading to Windows 10, It chugs for the first couple seconds of a match, and runs like a champ after that on max settings except for AA.

It seemed like it was getting hung up on physics calculations on win 7; every time the ball was struck it would freeze for half a second, and all CPU cores were pegged at the limit at all times when playing. (You'd think physics would be a GPU operation, and maybe they mostly are, but use some CPU too? I don't know) At any rate, Win 10's lightweight operations seem to have cleared up just enough CPU to allow things to process smoothly.

Definitely worth the update for the performance increase on my end. Saves me the cost of a PC upgrade for at least a short while.

I upgraded, and went back to 8 after 30 minutes.

Spotify started crashing randomly, all of my Adobe software became very unstable and some games wouldn't load at all. VLC also started crashing a lot, even after an update.

It's crap.

it's probably something you did wrong, but go ahead and declare it crap.

Pffft. Clearly you were doing it wrong :P

Maybe you'd need to do a DDU clean + fresh driver install.

When windows automatically updated my drivers last time, DSR flat out didn't work at all. I could select the factors, but the resolutions were never selectable in-game or in windows.

My new monitor doesn't really like custom resolutions all that much so DSR really is quite nice. Especially when you have 2 980TIs in SLI and a 60hz refresh rate isn't going to push them at all at 3440x1440. Though I do miss the flexibility of custom resolutions.

Opening the Volume Mixer and lowering the System Sounds slider does nothing for you?

And try switching the default language around a bit but end it on Fin. I had that problem on W8.1 already and now on 10 and this fixed it.

Thats fair, but imo, i still found issues with 8.1 over 7. The UI inconsistencies mainly. The underlying OS is better however in 8.1, and again better in 10, but having 1fps more or some insignificant performance gain doesnt excuse a poor UI that i use all the time.

I believe it should be mentioned for those who disable UAC because they think it's a nag / annoyance and don't want to deal with the prompts and think it's just to make the user experience more complicated. Contrary the alternative becoming an even bigger annoyance when one unscrupulous program installs itself unto your computer because you disabled elevation requirements to run something and basically gives itself administrative privileges. Things like root kits that install themselves at lowest levels of an OS kernel.

Even on exploits that your antivirus software won't detect that UAC will because it's trying to run at a elevated level and needs those privileges to execute.

There are some cases such as malicious Active X or Java Applets that basically run their code through your web browser, UAC will basically pop up during this times with it's permission prompt "Yo someone is trying to run something on your PC are you sure you want this to happen?"

More often then not people with UAC disabled won't get this warning, and the malicious program will just assume it has administrative rights and install itself and then well...

I've had a lot of fun with this in College when we used Virtual Machines and tried to do "network attacks" on these virtual machines some of them running Win 7 and Server 2008, normally the VPN tunnel was security enough, but our experiment with machines with the UAC disabled gave a obvious backdoor.
