Stay away from Windows 10.
Windows 10 Solitaire requires a subscription to remove ads
I suspect they're doing this as an experiment, but I imagine that most, if not all of the critical OS components are going to go the DLC route.
Fuck that. I'm just gonna go to Apple or start to really look into Linux if this will be the future of Windows.
It isn't though.
I mean, right now it's pretty tolerable, especially since it's, y'know, Solitaire. Don't get me wrong, I am really hoping that I'm just being one of those paranoid people that make a lot of fuzz over nothing. However, as it stands right now? I've loathed freemium systems like this and this kind of crap really turns me off from 10.
OP is specifically asking whether it's time to upgrade OS. I am simply stating that no, it isn't, and why that is.
I already tried uninstalling every optional Metro app that I could. Before that, I disabled all live tiles. I removed all pinned apps from showing in Start. It has not worked.
I sat and watched task manager after a reboot. I did literally nothing and sure enough after a few minutes, Runtime Broker shot way up in CPU usage. Didn't have this during the preview, which was an upgrade from 8.1. This is now happening on a fresh format and fresh install that I did about 24 hours ago now. It's driving me nuts.
I wish you luck on this. I'll check back a few times before I go ahead and reformat again.

I tried getting Reader and a couple other apps updated many, many times last night and this morning and it never went through, hanging on acquiring license. Other apps would go through after a few tries but not those three. Were you able to update those as well?
I built my PC two days ago, have installed every possible update on W8.1, but I still don't have one of those little windows icons in my taskbar to get Windows 10. Why?

The problem isn't that it's Solitaire -- I don't give two shits about it. If they're going to move to a subscription base where I have to pay for every component I want, then I'm bailing. Especially so when they start introducing ads, which as you can see if you follow the link I posted, they will not be small, unobtrusive ads.
I don't mind paying the license fee at all. However, moving to this system is just ridiculous.
Right, I don't mind if they remove it and decide to offer it as an optional component you can download. But this freemium bs doesn't sit well with me.
I just forced it through the Windows 10 Media tools update
HERE
Anyways, I'm locked into Windows 10 now. Just deleted Windows.old
Streaming X1 to PC is pretty awesome.
Well it took forever to get through the 'Preparing for Installation' process and then of course it ended up with an error again. Ugh.Curious, the files in Download certainly require permission to delete (and without a reboot will probably complain they are in use) but the BT folder had no kind of block for me. I definitely had to use a Windows Update Fixit tool as well, but that was because a prior update attempt crashed during install and caused some registry damage.
It really is. I'm kinda blown away by it, honestly.

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THISAnyone else with custom-built PC's getting something like this:

Do I need to clear my Software Distribution folder and force the update, or should I wait?
The check it does seems to think I'm ready... so I dunno what the holdup is.
DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.
You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

Follow the instructions here:

This is an expected message indicating that when installation begins it may require user interaction. This is the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade, and then following the instructions provided.
Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.
If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.
Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
2.It should exist, but if not, create it.
3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.
Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”
By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.
The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.
My X1 Streaming crashes as soon as I start playing a game on High. It's fine in the dashboard and menu's though on high. I have to knock it down to medium and it'll run smooth, but looks a little blurry for my tastes. Guess I need to try to hardwire my Xbox One...
Not to say you're wrong but this was all from the forced post earlier in this thread. I haven't gone to reddit or another site other than here.Yes, this is what happens when you use bad methods propagated by bad web sites telling you to upgrade based on advice from Reddit.
Instead follow the instructions I provided, which are sources straight from Microsoft
Any fix for Steam ignoring scaling settings? It looks fucking hideous and blurry now. Didn't have this probem on 8.1.

Looking in the windows store how do I tell what games are able to be played on my PC and what ones are for mobile?
Or can they all be played on my PC? (Apart from if they say they need touchscreen for me)
Thanks. I've got it downloading once again via the instructions above but if that fails for whatever reason, I'll just grab the tool here and go with that. Saw that mentioned on the prior page just now. Also Had this error. Download this iso. burn on DVD or run the upgrade directly.

Also I'm curious if users with custom built systems are experiencing more issues that those with stock or store bought.
Edge is pretty slick but man I can't get by without highlight search option, chrome spoils
I imagine something is up with your video card. Try updating the drivers or reinstalling them at least. The cpu and ram are having to pick up the slack for no gpu.I upgraded last night and everything was working fine, but today I'm having major issues. The system launched at a really low resolution, and the whole thing almost crashed when I tried to fix it. But more importantly, every time I open a game, it runs at less than a frame a second. Task Manager says that all of the CPU and memory is being used. Does anyone know how I could fix this? The answer may be in this thread, I will look, but I figured I'd leave this here as I'm really frustrated right now.

Reposting my entire post for the new page:
HDMI port doesn't work in my HP G72 laptop anymore. 10 does not give picture to my TV. I did the fresh install and updated ATI drivers..
Second time I upgrade and this always happens...
It also happened on Windows 7 but only when something using flash player was on, now it does that at every start up.
Well it took forever to get through the 'Preparing for Installation' process and then of course it ended up with an error again. Ugh.
Check HPs website for Windows 10 drivers for your other components.
you're in the matrix
Ok guy is this true in order to do a clean install? I just spoke with a customer service rep about me having to do a clean install but I need the code. The guy told me that I would need to reinstall win 7, download all the updates again, then wait for the notification to pop up and reinstall win 10. I'm like are you being serious? Fuck that shit. I'll just stick to Win 7.
