Upgrade to Windows 10?

Stay away from Windows 10.

I suspect they're doing this as an experiment, but I imagine that most, if not all of the critical OS components are going to go the DLC route.

Fuck that. I'm just gonna go to Apple or start to really look into Linux if this will be the future of Windows.

lmao this has been around forever. you're just being dramatic and following the reddit hivemind crap. C'mon

It isn't though.

I mean, right now it's pretty tolerable, especially since it's, y'know, Solitaire. Don't get me wrong, I am really hoping that I'm just being one of those paranoid people that make a lot of fuzz over nothing. However, as it stands right now? I've loathed freemium systems like this and this kind of crap really turns me off from 10.

OP is specifically asking whether it's time to upgrade OS. I am simply stating that no, it isn't, and why that is.

Seriously get a grip

Go into programs and uninstall

I already tried uninstalling every optional Metro app that I could. Before that, I disabled all live tiles. I removed all pinned apps from showing in Start. It has not worked.

I sat and watched task manager after a reboot. I did literally nothing and sure enough after a few minutes, Runtime Broker shot way up in CPU usage. Didn't have this during the preview, which was an upgrade from 8.1. This is now happening on a fresh format and fresh install that I did about 24 hours ago now. It's driving me nuts.

I wish you luck on this. I'll check back a few times before I go ahead and reformat again.

Hello again! I've since "disabled" Runtime Broker through a registry tweak, and everything has been fine for a good 6 hours as far as I can tell. All I've done was to change the dword value from a 3 to a 4 in the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TimeBroker] "Start"=dword:00000003 (change to 4)

You'll notice that Runtime Broker will still run when needed, without thrashing your CPU 100% of the time.

I built my PC two days ago, have installed every possible update on W8.1, but I still don't have one of those little windows icons in my taskbar to get Windows 10. Why?

Anyone else have one of those Intel Sticks / Meegopads? I can not install Windows 10 since I need more room on the stick and tried my best to make more room. I also had to make the bootable usb at work since for some odd reason my main PC with Windows 10 kept popping up the "Something Happened" error when creating it.

I was just wondering if wiping the stick and using my windows 8.1 Pro N key will work 100% without any problems. Need to update so I can get back to steam streaming.

You can actually right-click on tiles in the start menu and uninstall the program itself, in addition to the normal Control Panel program management. Get rid of the program. There's no stronger signal you can send if it's that important to you.

I tried getting Reader and a couple other apps updated many, many times last night and this morning and it never went through, hanging on acquiring license. Other apps would go through after a few tries but not those three. Were you able to update those as well?

Eventually, yes. Minecraft and Skype were the ones to hang longest for me. It does seem to be a problem that solves itself (hopefully, I really wish I had been able to write down the error code).

Upgraded early yesterday from Windows 7 and wanted to play around with it for a bit before I post any impressions. So far it has been wonderful. The upgrade only took about 30 minutes, everything transferred over perfectly, all my programs and apps run just as well as they did on Windows 7.

I really like some of the new apps like the mail, photo, sports, news, calendar and weather tiles. Makes everything feel clean and fresh. I just deleted everything that I wouldn't use and I haven't had any issues. However, I notices on some games from Steam, (Witcher 2 and Sleeping Dogs) don't run as well as they use to. Not sure what happened there but I use to get buttery 60 fps on both, now I get a few drops from 60 to 56-58ish. Maybe it'll work itself out.

So I had GoG Galaxy with Witcher 3 installed on a different hard drive when I upgraded to/clean installed W10. Is there any way turn be able to make the game work as is, or am I going to have to redownload the game? Already reinstalled Galaxy.

The problem isn't that it's Solitaire -- I don't give two shits about it. If they're going to move to a subscription base where I have to pay for every component I want, then I'm bailing. Especially so when they start introducing ads, which as you can see if you follow the link I posted, they will not be small, unobtrusive ads.

I don't mind paying the license fee at all. However, moving to this system is just ridiculous.

Right, I don't mind if they remove it and decide to offer it as an optional component you can download. But this freemium bs doesn't sit well with me.

Solitaire is free and ships worldwide with every copy of Windows 10.

why are people making a fuss here in..... wait i already know why. LOL

Looking in the windows store how do I tell what games are able to be played on my PC and what ones are for mobile?

Or can they all be played on my PC? (Apart from if they say they need touchscreen for me)

I just forced it through the Windows 10 Media tools update

HERE

Anyways, I'm locked into Windows 10 now. Just deleted Windows.old

I tried that last night. (I chose upgrade instead of create installation media, if that is pertinent info.) It downloaded, went through all the prompts, everything went fine. It started installing, and at some point past the 75% mark it had to restart the computer. I went to get a drink and came back and I was on the Gigabyte splash screen and it said boot failure. I selected to reboot the computer, and it just went back to Windows 8.1 with no prompts or errors or anything, like nothing ever happened.

What do I do from here? It seems like nobody has a clue. I've posted about this several times in several threads and have not got a single reply about it.

Curious, the files in Download certainly require permission to delete (and without a reboot will probably complain they are in use) but the BT folder had no kind of block for me. I definitely had to use a Windows Update Fixit tool as well, but that was because a prior update attempt crashed during install and caused some registry damage.
Well it took forever to get through the 'Preparing for Installation' process and then of course it ended up with an error again. Ugh.

It really is. I'm kinda blown away by it, honestly.

My X1 Streaming crashes as soon as I start playing a game on High. It's fine in the dashboard and menu's though on high. I have to knock it down to medium and it'll run smooth, but looks a little blurry for my tastes. Guess I need to try to hardwire my Xbox One...

Yes, this is what happens when you use bad methods propagated by bad web sites telling you to upgrade based on advice from Reddit.

Instead follow the instructions I provided, which are sources straight from Microsoft

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS
Anyone else with custom-built PC's getting something like this:

95sodIs.png

Do I need to clear my Software Distribution folder and force the update, or should I wait?

The check it does seems to think I'm ready... so I dunno what the holdup is.

DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.

You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

INSTEAD

Follow the instructions here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/d695e827-9774-4e10-8972-df8d51a7bb51?auth=1

This is an expected message indicating that when installation begins it may require user interaction. This is the largest software upgrade event ever and we’re managing it so everyone has a great experience. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade, and then following the instructions provided.

Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.

The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.

That sucks, but yeah - hardwire will probably do the trick. Both my computer and X1 are plugged directly into the router.

Anyone else having problems with touchpads? On my MSI Gs70 the touchpad works on the login screen then stops working when you log in. I tried reinstalling the drivers which didnt help. Kinda shocked that something so basic doesn't work.

/edit ok going into device manager and manually selecting update driver on the touchpad changed it from elan ps/2 to elen input device which fixed it.

Not to say you're wrong but this was all from the forced post earlier in this thread. I haven't gone to reddit or another site other than here.

But thanks for posting these instructions, I'm gonna look into them. Wish me luck.

edit: okay download is starting once again. This time 2699MB. *crosses fingers*

Welp everything Steam related is pretty fucked up after the update.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall the Steam client and running with admin priviledges but many games simply won't launch. Sometimes it says it can't read or create specific folders or in other cases I simply return to desktop without any advice right after I launch the game.

Any fix for Steam ignoring scaling settings? It looks fucking hideous and blurry now. Didn't have this probem on 8.1.

Looks totally blurred and hideous to me as well.

I upgraded last night and everything was working fine, but today I'm having major issues. The system launched at a really low resolution, and the whole thing almost crashed when I tried to fix it. But more importantly, every time I open a game, it runs at less than a frame a second. Task Manager says that all of the CPU and memory is being used. Does anyone know how I could fix this? The answer may be in this thread, I will look, but I figured I'd leave this here as I'm really frustrated right now.

I've played 3 games so far.

-Heavy Bullets: Pretty messed for me. The screen freezes a few seconds in, but sound still works. This happens 100% of the time I launch it.

-CS:GO: 1 crash stating I'm missing the Tahoma font. Went to go download and it says that fonts already installed. hasn't happened since though. Also maneuvering through menus causing a longer stutter than usual.

-The Evil Within: I haven't had any problems with this game so far. It seems to work great. I've only played an hour of it though.

at worst you will have to use a mouse as your touch input but most games I have messed with usually work one way or another.

It would be nice if the store filtered games by control scheme but maybe microsoft didn't want to do that right now.

Also I'm curious if users with custom built systems are experiencing more issues that those with stock or store bought.

My desktop was custom built and my laptop (though was built by pcspecialist). Desktop worked like a dream after the upgrade. Laptop not so much. Very unresponsive and would just loop on shutting down and/or restarting. Thankfully it seems doing a reset has massively helped it. No issues like I had before. Only pain now is reinstalling everything. Thank god I put my games on the D drive or we would have had a Veryyyyy long download ahead.

I imagine something is up with your video card. Try updating the drivers or reinstalling them at least. The cpu and ram are having to pick up the slack for no gpu.

ok so have upgraded an Intel NUC running win 7 pro and now have Windows 10 Pro activated. took about 25mins.

new os looks nice and snappy but i am getting freezes or sluggish-ness every now and then. its pretty consistent. either windows is updating or something is up with edge. scrolling just keeps mvoing betwen fast and slow and then freezes. maybe i shud clean install now..mmm

Anyone else unable to launch an email from notification action center into Outlook 2013?
Notification disappears but does not launch email message

Thanks alot for this. Solved my problem immediately after doing the RegEdit. Cheers!

Edge is cool and all but man. They need to make it more touch/tablet friendly... if you are holding tablet with two hands on sides there is no way to change tabs in any easy method... I need to reach up and pick a little sliver of screen space and hope I hit the right one... really hope they bring back some "metro ie" features as it improves..

And swipe back and forward option please

Against my better judgement I got impatient and went through with the upgrade. I can't help but want to play around with new tech.

Even though I have nvidia and 4 screens everything went butter smooth. No issues after about a day of use. Cool! Glad I'm not having the seemingly plentiful issues that others are having.

Took me a long time to sort out that mess of a start menu, though. But now that I've got everything the way I want it, its fine.

I still havent tested all the main stuff yet, though. Tonight I'll find out if the screens still switch properly when i use the win+p shortcut. My 4th screen is actually my TV so it's not always in use and I use that shortcut to make it the primary/only screen for when I play games on it.

HDMI port doesn't work in my HP G72 laptop anymore. 10 does not give picture to my TV. I did the fresh install and updated ATI drivers..

Well it took forever to get through the 'Preparing for Installation' process and then of course it ended up with an error again. Ugh.

Yeah, you're running into the same problems as I had. I had these errors and crashes during install for almost an entire day. Various combinations of deleting all the files, disabling updates and internet access, rebooting, running update Fixit tools and doing system restores many, many times ended up leading to it getting past the endless stream of stupid error codes. I couldn't honestly tell you what the exact trigger was in the end to get it to work.

I have an old NVIDIA card on my desktop pc... so what's up with drivers now?

Do I need to download newer win 10 drivers to load at install before triggering the upgrade there? And then install after? Or will it function until I find and load them in win 10?

Ok guy is this true in order to do a clean install? I just spoke with a customer service rep about me having to do a clean install but I need the code. The guy told me that I would need to reinstall win 7, download all the updates again, then wait for the notification to pop up and reinstall win 10. I'm like are you being serious? Fuck that shit. I'll just stick to Win 7.

Your first install of windows 10 needs to be an upgrade so it can activate. After it is activated you can burn a windows 10 disk and do a fresh install.

Anyone know how you can share the clips you take using Game DVR?
edit: nevermind my Xbox App wasn't updated lol

edit: now it saying it can't be shared because it doesn't recognize the game?? it's rocket league.

edit: I think I figured it out.

edit: nope haven't figured it out. Fuck.
