Upgrade to Windows 10?

Go to task view (windows key + tab or press the icon in the task bar)

Click on the new desktop icon in the bottom right.

Hmm, I don't like how this behaves with "singleton" apps (apps that you can only run a single instance of, and trying to run a second instance activates the first instance). It just switches back to the other desktop. Was hoping I would be able to run different copies in each desktop.

Still, better than nothing.

Man, I'm really hating the new update system. You can't disable auto updates when manually changing drivers, which has led to Windows installing an outdated driver while I'm trying to clean install the newest one in the past. It's very irksome to boot into safe mode, wipe every trace of the last driver away and have the OS idiotically install the shit right back in. Disabling wifi altogether seems to be the only sure way to prevent that from happening.

Not to mention it keeps installing shit I don't want. I try to keep my system as clean and minimal as I can, and it really bugs me that my devices have several extra drivers running at all times. This is a pretty big drawback for me.

I'm also not seeing many benefits in game performance anywhere, so aside from DX12 I'm not finding a whole lot to be excited about. 8.1 was actually not bad once you got settled into it (aside from the damn corner swiping). If anyone is satisfied with 8 or 7 now, I'd say there's no reason to install right away. Go ahead and wait for the initial bugs to be ironed out.

If you use DDU it will disable that crap...

I will put up with the driver problems, compatibility issues, launch bugs, and all the other bullshit in the world for this right here.

Truly a dream come true.

holy shit

And you can finally use copy/paste keyboard shortcuts! And it can go full screen. And you can even set the transparency of the command prompt (in the Colors tab -- 90% for life).

It was pretty funny (read: awesome) when at the original Windows 10 reveal last year, one of the demo's they had was the improvements to command prompt. Very long overdue, but very welcome.

It boggles my mind that nearly 40 years after the original Bourne shell, Windows cmd still feels infinitely inferior, even with working selection.

Indeed, it's sad. I keep telling myself it's time to learn PowerShell. everyone who uses it says it's complete shit, and then after they use it for longer they say it's not so bad, and then after they use it for a while they say it's amazing. I know it sounds crazy, but I've heard this same sentiment expressed by hardcore Linux people.

But this is just the shell, not the console. The real killer was just how shitty the console has been all this time. Now that that's essentially fixed (there are useful keyboard editing shortcuts now if you click the o[ption under the one I highlighted), hopefully cmd can start to become useful. I'll have to play with it some more.

just driver issues but they should eventually figure themselves out...honestly 8.1 drivers work find for most things

Hmm, the one major issue I am having with Win 10 is my internet doesn't work sometimes. I get this error message. Shutting down the system and powering it back up fixes it.

"ethernet doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

I don't suppose you know how to fix this, do you? I never had this issue on Windows 7 or 8.1.

That just happens to me like 30mins ago.
I just disable/enable the devices.

Downloaded the drivers, restarted the computer, and the games are still freezing. :( Not showing the "display driver failed" prompt anymore; it just freezes. This stinks so bad. I love this OS but I'm afraid I'm going to have to revert back to 8.1 since my games aren't working.

Have you updated all the other drivers? Audio, USB, chipset, SATA... an audio driver was causing me huge issues at 8's release but getting the latest from the vendor fixed it.

Should I try to do that from Device Manager? The thing is, everything seems to be working great, except I can't play my games. Anytime something 3D comes up on the screen in the game (on Burnout Paradise it was the car selection screen, and on Dishonored it was when I loaded up my saved game), it just freezes after a second.

10 is taking longer to boot up for me. I get a black screen (can still see my mouse cursor) after the blue Windows logo. This lasts maybe 10-15 seconds. Logging in feels longer and once I'm in the computer is really sluggish for a couple minutes.

8.1 just feel much faster and smoother.

Think I'm gonna use this as an excuse to finally get an SSD and do a clean install.
Oh God, I thought it was just me that felt that Win10 felt "sluggish" compared to 8.1.

I too am thinking of doing a clean install once I get an SSD. All of my art programs though...and custom brushes/settings/tweaks, not to mention games....ARRRGGGHH (reinstall process is a pain considering trying to tweak them took a couple of days).

having problems with the graphics.
Like 1 in 7 times, windows 10 doesnt seem to load the geforcedrivers.

Sometimes it happens when the screensaver starts also, and resets to ugly resolution

and agree about W10 not feeling too fast.

Mine doesn't feel sluggish. My boot time is slightly faster than it was with 7.

I'm using an SSD though. But my Windows 7 install was 3 years old and I had a ton of programs installed.

Couldn't the command prompt go full screen with Alt-Enter back in Windows 3.1 or 95? It went away at some point, but I really thought it used to be there as a feature.

Is this a desktop or laptop? It might be an issue with integrated graphics.

You don't do it from Device Manager, but that can tell you what might not have a driver. I mentioned device manager to get details on what model devices you have in your system.

If it's a PC from Dell or the like, just go to the manufacturer's site and enter the model (better off the serial number/"service tag") and get the latest drivers - if they don't have a Windows 10 section, make a note of what devices are in your system and Google for the manufacturer's driver download page. There are generally newer drivers available from the chipmaker than the PC seller.

Or downgrade and try when 10 isn't so new. It can take some time and effort to troubleshoot stuff like this, so if you have a valid restore point (I've not upped to 10 yet) that takes you back a version, I see no reason not to try? Create a restore point first.

I had Windows 8.1 going to Windows 10 via upgrade. Windows 7 feels slower for me now...

It might also be just drivers. But I did see an increase in boot-times right after I had deleted my previous install, and also cleared some programs from startup (my startup is also very clean), not to mention a goodthorough defragging.

I still might want to do that bit of advice and turn off live apps to see if it will start up quicker more, but I was wondering if there are more tweaks I can apply to have this sucker zip through. I'm not sure if this is a "clean install privillage" though.

That's awesome! I'm glad things improved on their own for you. As for me, Windows 10 has been running flawlessly since changing that one registry value. Apps work, search works, everything works as far as I can tell. Like I said, Runtime Broker is most definitely still running on my machine, it's just much less demanding now.

I'll give the default value another chance in a couple days. Hopefully by then it will no longer an issue. :-)

Well, shit.

Rebooted tonight after it being fine all day and guess what? Yep! Runtime Broker was back with the fury of 1,000 suns. I went ahead with the registry fix until Microsoft does something about it, if that ever happens. At least now I can get some favorite Metro apps back and put some tiles back on my Start menu and not wonder if those are causing issues.

Edit: Also, it's still running, just at 0-1% CPU usage and next to no memory usage. And as far as I can tell, everything else (Start menu, Metro apps, live tiles, etc.) is still working just fine.

Anybody own a Creative Sound Blaster ZXR audio card and have Win10 installed? I want to see if the card will work with Win8 drivers on Win10 at least. May buy one but If I do, I may stay on Win7 if its not working properly. (recall some issue with Digital audio out)

It's a desktop that I built a few days ago. Worked perfectly while on 8.1. I really don't want to have to revert back to that since 10 is so nice, but I may have to unfortunately.

Just update every driver you can based on the parts you picked. Also check into updating your motherboard BIOS.

Is there any way to check which parts get force-updated (e.g. GPU or touchpad) versus which ones you can safely update drivers yourself? Or was the preview build issue resolved where older drivers were getting auto-reinstalled back on top of manual drivers?

I also have a pc that I just recently built running 8.1.

I'm thinking of waiting on upgrading that one for a bit.

I guess I'm using my old pc as a test subject. :p

Is it true that Windows 10 Pro lets you prevent the FORCED windows updates?
From what i've been reading, it is said that Windows 10 Home Edition is the only one to force automatic updates and that Pro lets you chose to update or not.

It lets you defer them for an unspecified amount of time.

Defer upgrades in Windows 10
Some Windows 10 editions let you defer upgrades to your PC. When you defer upgrades, new Windows features won’t be downloaded or installed for several months. Deferring upgrades doesn’t affect security updates. Note that deferring upgrades will prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as they’re available

Hey, everyone just came from Windows 10 subreddit and AMDs support forums, and it seems that there is a problem with the current drivers on Windows 10 for some users (seems to be dynamic graphics users mostly). The problem causes the machine to hang with a black screen for a minute after the bootup logo, again (sans black screen) right after the desktop loads up and during shutdown/restart.

I've tested by uninstalling AMD drivers with DDU. Reverting to the Intel integrated alone allows the machine to boot/shutdown/restart just fine without hangs.

Just wanted to put this out there for AMD users experiencing this problem, so you don't waste your time trying to reinstall the entire OS/drivers.

Installed no problem at all on my Asus laptop. I've got a 960m in here and updated to the Windows 10 driver with no issues. Haven't tried any games yet but regular desktop usage seems fine.

Everything worked (touchscreen, 4k display with all system stuff like toolbars and icons set to zoom 250%, webcam) except for the Asus proprietary facial recognition software for logging into Windows itself. But for everything else, Asus had a Windows 10 driver ready to go. Everything seems great so far A+++ would upgrade again

How do you update the BIOS? Sorry about all of these questions.

I haven't tried updating an UEFI, but I assume it's basically the same way you update a BIOS these days; you just download the .exe file for your motherboard BIOS and run it in Windows. Updating BIOS these days is a cakewalk compared to how it once was.
