Upgrade to Windows 10?

I have this issue and I don't see the x360 wireless driver in the list. What are the exact steps to do this? Did this countless times on win 8/etc (god DAMN do I wish I got a real one instead) but I dont' see the option anymore. I see a list of manufacturers for drivers, and 360 isn't in the Microsoft listing.

- Go to Device Manager
- Search for any unknown device
- Properties - Driver Tab - Update Driver
- Choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
- Choose "Let me pick"
- Scroll to the bottom and look for "Xbox 360 Peripherals"
- Choose "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows
- ????
- Profit!

Well..this wasn't the menu I was given, but somehow attaching the thing directly to a USB port instead of through a USB hub has fixed my issue and it worked just like in windows 8 this time. It was refusing to recognize it as anything but a USB hub device as it was.

Windows 10 apparently fixed Deadly Premonition for me. I couldn't even get to the title screen in 8.1 and decided to give it a last chance before applying for a refund on Steam and it worked perfectly. I still need to play it for longer to see if there aren't any crashes further, however.

Okay...the controller connects, but the computer receives no inputs at all, even when using the "set up game controllers" testing thing in control panel. Why is EVERYTHING regarding controllers broken to shit in windows 10? This is worse than trying to use DS3tool

edit: a reboot fixed it because of course it did

I wonder if anyone can verify this..

I have OEM license of Windows 7, and am planning to build a new computer probably early next year.

I know OEM licenses are for the original setup only, but I wonder if I could still register Windows 7 on the new computer and then upgrade it to W10? I haven't done the verification for my current computer yet.

Or am I doomed to buy a new license?

Yeah, my bad.

This one is recent and shows the issue on the CPU/physics side:
http://www.techspot.com/review/1042-windows-10-vs-windows-8-vs-windows-7/page2.html

Application performance also consistently lower on W10 compared to W7. It's ridiculous.

So you post an outdated link, then post another one, and the first thing I see is Windows 10 performing best.. also in most the gaming benchmarks in that link W10 performs best or insignificantly worse at best. ..And W10 has just been released..so we're not even talking DX12 here or even mature drivers. W10 isn't even supposed to be just about specific benchmarks. I'm not sure I get what's supposed to be so ridiculous here.

My Windows 7 is a Japanese operating system as I had my PC built in Japan, but I put vistalizer on it to get it mostly in English (can't believe only pro version has language options)

Am I going to have a problem upgrading?

Did Firefox just get a big W10 compatibility update or something? Browser feels faster than it was at W10 launch and scrolling seems smoother. Just me? Feels like they added motion blur while scrolling too lol. I didn't want to move to Edge.

edit: yeah. version 40. nice.

My PC turn on by itself while I was sleeping and updated stuff without my permission. How do I disable that?

You sure it was Windows updates and not just normal maintenance? If the latter, just search "maintenance" and uncheck "allow scheduled maintenance to wake my computer".

Upgraded on my work computer. Do not like at all.

How do I make sure it doesn't automatically upgrade for me on my home PC?

IMO it's not ready for primetime yet. I'll be waiting for sp1 and seeing how it is then.

Disable on-board/integrated video/GPU in the BIOS settings.
I had this issue with a system that had a 560Ti installed - open up the hardware manager and right click on the graphics card. Then update the driver via internet and it should work.
Apparently neither of these options worked - her card isn't even showing up under the device manager. Any other tips? I ran the update on my own PC myself to see if I could replicate her problem and fix it, but mine when through without a hitch.

There's no Service Pack on Windows anymore. It has been that way since 8. Updates now are more frequent, with bigger packages being delivered monthly. There's one for August, for example. You can cancel your reservation on the upgrade app if you want.

It should not automatically upgrade, it just notifies you that you can do it.

To dispel some rumors:

Currently, Windows 10 performs WORSE than both 8.1 and 7. It's not a significant margin, but everyone saying that 10 runs better is essentially wrong.

This article shows a bunch of benchmark, the aggregate for games is 8.1 > 7 > 10.
http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1460&page=12
EDIT, DISCARD THIS. I just noticed the article is very old. Still looking for actual comparisons on release version, since I can't find so many of them...

Other articles all reliably show worse Windows 10 performance on CPU physics tests.

On top of that boot times are very slightly longer, and memory footprint is similar to 8.1, but still larger, and so less optimized.

So, in all key areas: loading speed, memory footprint and game performance Windows 10 is simply worse that those preceding it.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the marginally worse performance across the board is due to all the tracking and spywork that Microsoft has layered on top of the OS.

Basically Windows 10 is Windows 8.1 plus a bunch of tracking/spy applications on top of it.

I wish the numbers showed at least some small improvements, instead of things getting worse. What's even the point?

In Windows 7 and 8 I was only able to run games in PCSX2 at about 15-20fps and after the upgrade I can get a stable 60fps in most games. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nothing changed but the OS.

I knew it! Firefox was running smoother than ever the day I upgraded.

Just upgraded to Win10 but now the Steam overlay doesnt work with any games.

Anyone got a fix?

Edit: Lol, it seems to have fixed itself the minute I typed that :V

Overall I'm pretty happy how well the upgrade works when you finally get it to install. I don't think I'll even bother with a clean install.

As an OS, I still can't believe how MS can churn out something that feels so unfinished in some areas. Apple is still miles ahead in usability and polish.

totally agree but you can see where they are going with the new UI - they just need to get it applied to things like device manager, computer management etc.

Does anyone know if you can add the xbox app to steam so you can launch streaming from steam?

I'm getting this when I try to add a shortcut from the desktop

Just saw this, you're adding a shortcut file. Steam may not recognize it. Try searching for the root .exe file of the xbox app and then adding that as a non-steam game.

Oh man, it looks purdy good. I just need to find a way to get rid of the ugly white title bars, I want my accent colour everywhere

It's not showing up in the list, thats why I made a shortcut which resulted in the above

AFAIK the metro style apps are stored in a hidden folder named "windowsapps" in the program files folder. Just had a go at accessing it on my windows 8.1 machine and it won't let me in due to it me having the wrong permissions (even running as admin).

I'm assuming the same folder structure is used in Win 10, seems like they want to make it hard for anyone to do this with Steam. If you can get the file address itself it should be easy from there.

Edit: this is how you can access it. Go to program files, select "view" and check "hidden items", then follow these instructions. the xbox app should be in there. But I don't know what it'd be called.

Edit 2: this may also help. Windows 8 instructions but it should still be relevant.

Yeah I just read that theyre hidden and locked for security.
Oh well.

Just unlocked mine. There's a whole lot of indecipherable shit in that file. I've been making shortcuts using .bat and fake .exe files in Steam for ages.

This is the first time I've seen any company make that task very hard.

Sounds too hard for me :V

I can live without it

the last bunch of updates broke my Internet connection.. it kept saying that the connection between the pc and router was interrupted.. had to regress to 8.1 again

Anyone had any issues upgrading if they installed an SSD and used Samsung's packaged software to transplant your OS onto it?

I keep getting an error with no attached error code:

'Something Happened

Sorry, we're having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 10. Please close Setup and try again.'

It's not an OEM copy, so I'm not sure what to do.

I just did this one: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/611696927924132613/, on Windows 8 with the "Games" app which is the basically the same as the xbox one.

Took 5 mins and worked perfectly.

Hmm, that launches it, but as soon as it launches, it says im not in game on Steam

Used to do that on battle.net

Edit: did the second command and it works now.
Thanks a lot man
Now to get the overlay working with it so I can take screens and chat :V

Funny thing is that it did work significantly better during the beta period but today all that disappeared for some reason - it's laggy and choppy again and h/w vsync is missing even though there were no updates and I didn't change any settings.

Win10 is a very unstable OS at the moment.

Firefox works flawlessly for me, no lag or chop.

PSA: if you use Bitdefender anti virus(2015) and download the latest Win10 patches the built in firewall will block all internet access till you toggle off stealth mode in the firewall settings menu. This is a critical flaw and I hope it gets patched soon.

I wasted an hour wracking my brain over why all my other devices were connecting to the internet fine but my PC.

I found a random copy of Windows 7 OA (Chinese edition) in my house.

Two questions:

Can you use the OA key to get a non-OEM Windows 10?
Can you use the Chinese key to get an English Win 10 key?

As I've said it did work flawlessly until today when they've released 40 from beta. Beta was working flawlessly for me as well. Currently I don't have any vsync and everything is choppy again as on 39. No idea what's happened.

Weird.
I've just this minute updated to 40 and it's fine

you can set the language to whatever you want

Yeah, I did some investigating and bumped into the same lack of vsync in YouTube after the previous post and decided that the NV's driver got fucked up in some unimaginable way. Did like ten different driver un/installs (I'm really loving this forced installs of all crap from WU feature!) and now it seems fine again.

It was kinda the same on Vista at first, until both NV and AMD found out a way of installing their driver in such a form that would not be messed with by WU/DM. Here's hoping that the next driver version will fare better. Turned off everything "automatic update" everywhere I could for now.

Edit: Ok, I don't know what the fuck is going on with WU and NV's 353.62 drivers. As soon as I install them they work fine and then it looks like WU is installing some other driver on top of them which completely fucks them up.

I'm seriously starting to hate Win10.

Yeah, Windows Update has pushed out several broken nvidia driver packages, one was even missing the nvidia control panel since the archive for it was corrupt causing it to not get installed. You'd think that microsoft and nvidia would at least test these before forcibly pushing them out to millions of people but nah.
Anyway you have a few options to deal with this issue:

Use this microsoft tool to hide the updates https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 You'd have to keep hiding updates as they come out though.
Another option is the Display Driver Uninstaller http://www.wagnardmobile.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=92 to clean out the driver and disable automatic driver updates.
Advanced users you can hide all future updates matching a string (NVIDIA* for example) with a powershell module http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=401588

Could try reseating the GPU and double check that the PCI-E power connectors are plugged into the card (sounds to me as though the card isn't properly seated in the PCI-Express slot and/or isn't receiving sufficient power therefore the motherboard defaulted to the integrated adapter). If that isn't the issue, try the following:

1. Run command prompt
2. Enter set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
3. Enter Start DEVMGMT.MSC
4. Hit the View menu and select show hidden devices.
5. Remove each instance of the card including all "unknown device".
6. Reinstall drivers.

Upgraded last night, and everything (including my wireless 360 controller) has been smooth sailing. I actually feel like my day to day OS use is snappier but I dunno, could just be placebo.

Win + X > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > Never install driver software from Windows Update

(Don't forget to uninstall drivers from WU after that)

Also, I feel like I'm one of the lucky ones in Windows 10. No bugs, no crashes, nothing at all, except for one bug in Edge that freezes it when I hit "run" in a download. Then again, I'm a Chrome user, so no big deal. Loving the system so far. Hope they release updates to fix the issues you guys are having.

Better use my option. More definitive and secure.

I have an old Creative Labs X-Fi sound card in my system. Every time I reboot, I have to re-install the (unoffical) drivers, as windows updates what I have to something that doesn't work.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Any idea how I can stop it from "fixing" things when I reboot?

I have a minor but annoying problem. When I try to extend my desktop in the display settings, it gives me an error unless I duplicate the desktop first. Anyone else have this? Is there a fix?
