Upscalers, CRTs, PVMs & RGB: Retro gaming done right!

No, those are just composite and s-video inputs. Definitely not a desirable model, it completely lacks RGB.

Excellent. Thank you so much. I thought that it may have been some fancy high-falutin' connector.

EDIT: Then there's this one, for example, which has the same looking connector, but int he bottom center, you see RGB inputs with BNC connectors. I assume you'd get a scart cable and then use this adapter to get the signal from the console to the monitor. Do I have it right?

EDIT 2: Final question. Retrogamingcables.com offers scart cables with "Composite video" and "Composite sync". I'm reading the guides on retrorgb.com but perhaps I'm exceptionally dense today; I don't understand which one I want.

Little bit of fat scanline porn for my rgb brethren tonight...

Megaman 2 in rgb on my 20" Sony BVM 20F1U. Gotta get better at taking pictures, as these are dark, but you can literally see every single pixel.

The framemeister doesn't include a euro adapter. Make sure you don't plug any euro scart cables into it without an adapter.

Oh wait I think I'm getting cables mixed up. It includes an adapter that lets me use the cables I posted above though, correct? I'm using this on an HDTV in the U.S.

No, you've posted 2 different types of cables. Jp21 and scart are not compatible. Hopefully you haven't already purchased them. You can either buy jp21 pin cables (only really compatible with the xrgb) and use the included adapter, or buy scart cables(more readily available) and get an adapter to use them with the mini.

Ah ok, yea I'm doing a bit more reading on it, didn't realize JP21 & Scart were different. Didn't order anything yet thankfully. Thanks for the help!

No problem. If you have anymore questions just ask.

If you go with scart I have a spare euro scart to jp21 pin adapter cable I'd sell for like $17 shipped. It came along with my used xrgb mini and I have no need for it. Basically it'll let you plug scart into one end and the other end connects to the jp21 pin adapter. It probably came from retro console accessories, but I don't know for sure.

Here's some quick shots of my Olympus OEV 143 rebranded 14" Sony PVM. Only composite right now and not that great of shots but I'm happy with it for $50. RGB stuff is on it's way in the mail right now.

Awww yeah! I got two of the 20" sibling to your monitor from work earlier in the year! Still see a 14" on top a medical cart in the anestetics store room once in a while. Cant help but think of them as gaming monitors now. XD

Where did you get yours?

Thanks - think I'm going to grab a jp21 cable for my JPN Saturn for now, then do a bit more research on my other systems before buying anything.

Retro Console Acc. seems to mostly sell scart cables so I probably have to go that route along with the Scart to RGB Mini adapter for my remaining systems. Forgot to account for having to buy $100+ in cables on top of the Framemeister, so that'll have to wait a bit, lol.

If you're going to go with scart later theses no reason to buy a jp21 Saturn cable. Otherwise you'll have to swap adapters. The region of the console has nothing to do with the cable outside of a few Nintendo systems, and that's mostly just pal consoles.

I'd love to get my hands on a 19" or 20" monitor eventually. But for now this 14" is doing its job perfectly. Played through a game of Musha got to the level 5 boss and died. Definitely a lot more fun to play on a proper screen.

For a Nes modded with a NESRGB kit I assume I need a specific cable to a xrgb or tv but it's unclear to me which cable I need to buy.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

That depends on what A/V port you install on the system and how you wire the NESRGB to the A/V port.

I've seen it commonly packaged with SNES style A/V connectors and Genesis style connectors so that you can use RGB cables made for those systems. I've also seen generic mini-din ports and VGA ports used. You'd get a cable to match whichever A/V port you choose.

Yes, that monitor is one that accepts RGB, and yes that is the kind of adapter that you would need to get from scart to the BNC connections that are on that kind of monitor. For you last question I normally try to go with composite sync, (also refereed to as csync, raw sync, and several others terms depending on where you are buying from), even if it may not matter for most systems. I don't think there is a downside to ever using it while there are a few systems that benefit from it. There are some monitors that only accept csync as well and you would need a sync stripper if you aren't already using csync. Another note is that there are some systems that don't output csync and you should go for a different kind, like sync on luma for ps1.

Lastly, I would recommend retro_console_accessories seller on ebay for all of your cables, other then the scart to bnc one which she doesn't make. She makes a bunch of different cables for about every rgb console and some may be out of stock at any given time, but it is worth the wait if they are. She makes really good cables.

Awesome. Definitely let me know. I tried seperating it entirely --my SNES by nature was actually in a different powerstrip, but my PVM and AVR was in the same strip. I plugged the AVR in the bathroom, so all three were seperated. I really don't think it's a ground loop for us. The SNES does have the reputation of exceptionally bad SCART buzzing. Although, the weird thing is I get some SNES level buzz when I'm in the menu of my Everdrive 64. As soon as I boot the game, the buzz is very, very minor and hard to notice.

Happy to report that even with the audio output fed directly into my Sennheiser HD 25-2's, there's absolutely no buzz whatsoever. None. The shielded cables make a total difference.

So Solaris Japan says XRGB Minis should be available today, but it's still listing them as a preorder! I know it's Saturday, but I want to see my order status change from "Shipping: Pending" to "Shipped"!

I guess I'm just a little excited to get some high quality retro goodness on my flatscreen...

That's odd - I ordered mine from Solaris on Tuesday and it shipped on Thursday.

Quick question is the PVM-20M4U worth 95? Is that one even worth picking up?

That is a good one depending on the condition. Find out the build date on it (will be printed on the back) and see if you have a way of telling the condition of the screen. There isn't a way to check the operational hours on that one though, but it is a nice unit. Was the first PVM I got and spent about $100 for it.

That's pretty subjective, but FWIW I paid more than that for a 20M2U (same series but slightly lower def tube) and I love it.

If it's in good condition (colors and geometry aren't weird) then I say yes.

Anyone had any experience with the JVC pro monitors? I have an option to buy a TM-H1900 or the 17" version of it, for like 20 USD. They don't have RGB though :/ S-video looks like the only choice - but I still think it would look better than RGB on a cheap CRT on a GameCube or PS2? These have 750 Lines, seems decent :)

There are SO MANY different PVMs. Is there a model number or designation that is generally advised to stay away from?

Apart from obvious things that you can verify yourself by looking at the monitor itself (input connectors, etc.), one thing you may want to avoid is models that can't process composite video as sync. I know someone made a list of those models somewhere but I can't find it right now.

Question: for a US Sega Saturn, what do I need to connect it to an XRGB mini/Framemeister?

I have a Euro SCART cable, will I need an adapter to convert that to the "D21" terminal on the Framemeister?

EDIT--nevermind, I think. I believe the Framemeister comes with an adapter.

Got my RGB cables in today for my SNES, N64 and Genesis. Lets just say I did not expect the picture that I got. It is absolutely beautiful. I don't think I could ever go back to Composite now. Saturn RGB cables are on the way and I'm probably gonna be RGB modding my TG-16. I might get the NES RGB board and mod my Toploader but that is a tad expensive and I am on the fence for that.

Quite frankly I don't think pictures on the internet even do it justice, I was a tad bit sceptical as this monitor put a decent picture out on composite, but it looks like icky muddy poo poo compared to RGB. I will also say I was surprised to see it got rid of the rainbow banding on my Genesis as well.

I do have a few other things to get, specifically a scart switch would be nice as I'll have to settle with swapping cables for now and another RGB cable for the N64 so I don't have to swap them.

So much for playing Tropico 5 on my pc tonight haha. Think my night is gonna be just gawking at the beautiful picture that these games have. Honestly it's like rediscovering these. Never though a picture this good was possible. I can see why you guys are all hooked on this.

I will also say I haven't really played with configuring this monitor all too much. It is basically as is minus a few small tweaks from the front controls.

Anyways heres some CRT porn for you guys. Not the best shots but you get the idea. *Quite a few pictures*

It is incredible. I'm going to be sad when all of the CRTs die, but I guess there's always Framemeister

I have a JVC BM-H2000PN-K which I picked up 99p. Mines is 750 Lines with RGB inputs. The monitor is awesome. Geometry is straight and sharp as hell. I'd imagine the model you are looking at will look great in S-Video. I own a Sony PVM-20M2E and i prefer the JVC due to the great geometry and little setup required in the service menu to get a great picture

If the monitor is in good condition i would say its worth $20

Always happy to post pics :)

And a crop of Mega Man 2 running on my RGB Famicom

Awesome looking pics guys! This is making the wait for my RGB stuff even worse: my Framemeister is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, but it'll probably be another week until my RGB cables arrive. Until then, the best I have is S-video for SNES and N64.

But those scanline tho. Mmmm

Been thinking of getting a PVM-144QM since I got a nice offer. Is it any good? The size is nice since I don't have much space in my room.

Still waiting on my RGB cables from retro_console_accessories, but until then, S-Video looks pretty darn decent:

Still need to play around with the scanlines (On a 720p TV with some nasty overscan). Does anyone know how to enable scanlines outside of Meister mode? I've already updated to the latest firmware.

Can anyone recommend a passive component cable switch? I want to funnel my GCN, OG Xbox, and PS2 component outputs into a single input on my HDTV, with no processing on the signal.

I basically am looking for the component version of one of these composite switches:

view-TRS000-3-Video-Devices-to-1-Composite-AV-Signal-Switch-w-RCA-AV-cable-TV-Set-2.jpg

Preferably, it shouldn't even need to be plugged in. Just a straight up physical component switch with no remote and no bullshit.

Any feedback on a Sony Trinitron PVM-14N6U? Is this a decent high-end CRT or should I look for something better? Any caveats with this unit?

How are Solaris for Framemeisters? After being mucked around on eBay twice, I just want to order one, have it ship within' at least a week of payment received.

I've mailed them about current availability, but have yet to get a response (I wanna say, they had the XRGB-mini on back order until very recently) So I wanna get an idea if they do have the thing in stock and ready to go or will I be put on a waiting list.

Any one recently got a mini through Solaris?

I wonder if anyone has thought about releasing a TV with a CRT filter option. That would be kind of cool. Even has benefits watching SD TV content.

Solaris is great, it shipped 2 days before their restock date, and I had it in 3 days (express shipping). I think my total was $360 express shipped. It was the cheapest I found too.
