ATP:
Roger "GOAT" Federer:
The 36 year old is once again the betting favourite for a US Open, sadly his back finally gave up
after he had to carry the ATP-tour on his shoulders all year long. If healthy he should be able to go far.
Rafael "Suprisingly Healthy" Nadal:
The new number one will play his last Grand Slam tournament with his long time coach and uncle Toni.
Last time he won a hard court tournament people outside the US didn't even know who Donald Trump was. Good times.
Andy "Punished" Murray:
Andy boasts an impressive 25-10 W/L record and one tournament win in 2017.
He hasn't played a match on hard courts since early march where he lost in the first round of Indian Wells.
These days he's more of a clay specialist and we shouldn't expect much from him in New York.
Alexander "Oti's Boy" Zverev:
The ATP's new shooting star has only just recently found out that the Grand Slams are two weeks long.
Let's see if he can apply this new-found knowledge and make a deep GS run for the first time in his career.

WTA:
Garbine "Never Made The Third Round Of The USO" Muguruza:
WTA's new darling has a chance to establish herself as the clear cut best player on the tour.
At least until Serena Williams returns in 2018 to put her in her place.
Johanna "English" Konta:
Konta is trying to become England's first grand slam winner since the industrial revolution and
make everyone in her home country stop pretending that they like Andy Murray.
Angelique "Oti's Girl" Kerber:
After winning two Grand Slams last year she failed to reach a single GS QF in 2017 so far.
The defending champ is working hard to turn her year around and once again raise the trophy in New York.
Karolína "???" Plíšková:
I'm being honest with you here, I have no idea who she is. Apparantly she's the world number 1? I expect her to go out in round 2.
Simona "No.2" Halep:
Halep is desperately avoiding to become the new women's number 1 in the world. Nobody really knows why she's doing this but she's certainly succeeding.
We can expect her to make a deep run and then lose to a qualifier in the semis.
edit: Halep just drew Maria Sharapova in the first round. Bye Bye Simona.
Belinda Bencic
Next year!

The world number 1 is up for grabs on both sides.

ATP:
If anyone of Murray/Nadal/Federer wins the tournament they will be the number 1 the week after the USO no matter what anyone else does. Here is a handy graphic:

WTA:
On the WTA's side it's a bit more complicated, i tried to put a graphic together:

Shirtless Isner
BELTWENTYVE!!

The thing I want the most is for Woz to lose in the fina vs a random to become #1 with no title.

As for the men, eeeh. If Fed loses I don't care who wins. Hopefully Zverev we need a solid young lad.

Wait a minute, Maria actually drew Halep in the first round?

WHAT

This is too good. If halep doesnt beat an injured rusty and out of form Maria she might as well retire.

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me if Maria won that match. Also wouldn't surprise me if Simona won it, though.

Regardless, it should be fun to watch! XD

I shot people I like more for less.
Btw, Cilic takes Murray's spot, Querrey takes Cilic's spot, Kohlschreiber takes Querrey's spot, Lacko takes Kohlschreiber's spot

Packed top half, extremely open bottom half.
Add to that a potentially slightly handicapped Federer and a not in top form Nadal and it's a recipe for a wild tournament.

shit I think I could make it to the finals in the bottom half of the draw

(not really but the bottom half is 10x easier than the top half. I even have Querrey and Kyle Edmund making the Quarter finals in my draw)

Arthur Ashe night session lineup for Monday

Sharapova v. Halep
followed by
D.King v. Zverev

Ashe night session for Tuesday:
Keys v. Mertens
followed by
Federer v. Tiafoe

?

i don't think that this is an indication of a strong era. it's just that Serena took away 2000 points and bounced and nobody else was really dominant enough to secure her place at the top.

#TheKerbs just wanted to make things interesting for us.

Danke, Kerber. <3

"weak era"

Uh, personally, I'd say this is concrete evidence we're in the midst of a weak era.

Absolutely no one outside of Serena, Sharapova or Azarenka *wants* to be #1 at the moment, or feels they deserve to be #1.

Unfortunately, Serena's about to have a baby, Azarenka is dealing with family issues (and also still trying to shake the rust from her game) and Sharapova can't seem to stay healthy for more than a match or two.

As such, we're left with a handful of women who play one good tournament, only to follow it up with about four bad ones.

Here's hoping Muguruza is able to buck that trend at the USO. I'd be happy for many other players if they won the tournament instead, but I'd really like to have a dominant or at least semi-dominant player atop the rankings again...

Actually Serena didn't play in the final of the US Open last year. It was Kerber v. Pliskova. The reason why Kerber can't become #1 after the US Open, even if she wins, is because she's defending 2000 points. I believe if she loses first round to Osaka, she'll fall outside the top 25

uh Serena won AO -> she took away 2000 points from the race.

Wow, I had a feeling she'd take a tumble if she fails to defend her title (and let's be honest, she's *very* unlikely to defend her USO title), but I had no idea she'd tumble quite so far with an opening-round loss!

Thankfully, I have a feeling she'll win vs. Osaka. Should that prove true, she *should* be OK for a few rounds. Fingers crossed for her sake!

fantastic OP. looking forward to the next 2 weeks here. I wasn't able to get time to go up this year to catch any matches, hoping next year.

Go Federer!

Actually it looks like she'll be ranked just inside the top 20 if she loses first round. But yeah she has a 25-17 record this year so she's lucky to be ranked as high as she is right now
