(US Release) Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Thread

8 Platinum Crests for me so far.
I unlocked the D and K kingdoms and just as I reached the last kingdom in K thinking that it was the last level, another one with a J fell down. Guess it is going to spell out DK JB.

Damn, I am absolutely loving the game though. I am only on the
9th
kingdom but I have probably put well over 10 hours into the game. For some reason the first level was the hardest to get the platinum crest on.

I still suck at the combo system. Can barely get 800 or 900 beats on a stage.

I need to master the combo moves (I don't even know how to do a backflip. :X)

What's the trick to comboing? It's not the same as getting multiple bananas in one fell swoop, right? I noticed that double jumping leads to +2, and for some reason, double jumping and grabbing a ledge leads to +3?

Run in one direction, then hit the opposite direction and jump. One way to really rack up combos is to do a back flip, then a ground pound and there will be a combo of 3 right there, and then clap to grab whatever is near you.(i.e. one of the smaller monkeys or the branches) to continue your combo. I think my highest combo was like 12.

For every aeriel move you perform, you gain +1 to your combo. The higher your combo, the more each bannana is worth. When you touch the ground, your combo resets. Also, you only gain +1 for every different aeriel move you pull off so if you jump between two walls like 5 times, you will only gain +1 for the initial jump.

Well gee I'm stupid. :lol

Cool. What does comboing do for you, exactly?
The higher your combo, the more beats that each bannana is worth. With a high combo you can grab 400 beats before touching the ground as long as you keep it going.

Thanks for the clarification!

On my first try for grabbing the bananas at the end, I got like 83! But now I average 55-60. :(

I don't know how I did it, I can never get even close to 80 now.

Just got this game today. I honestly can't remember when i've had this much fun with a game(actually, I can. It was Viewtiful Joe.) I'm a huge fan of games that feel likr they wouldn't be out of place in an arcade, and this is definently one of them.

I've noticed that this game is one of the most attractive i've seen to casual players. All of my casual friends(whose gaming collection begins and ends with "Madden") love playing this game(they do horrible, but that's to be expected.:)

I've also found that since the game's levels are so short, it's easy to switch people. For instance, one person does the first, switch for the second, etc.

Sometimes, we'd even all pitch in at the same time; for example, at the end-of-level minigame thing we would all clap together. And at the Watermelon Kingdom boss I would jump, my friend would clap, and I would pound the boss.

What a totally kickass game.

The graphics are surprisingly beautiful. I cannot wait to see what else this new Tokyo studio does.

I agree. Some of the effects are just drop-dead gorgeous. Just wait until you get to the
volcano
level. The heat flare, among other things, is absolutely stunning.

Agreed. I've heard some people say the game has mixed bag visuals and stuff, and if you actually play it's far from the case. Besides being 60fps, there's fur shading and there a couple of places where bump mapping appears to have been employed. I bet the programmers had fun with this one.

Yeah I agree. The game runs at such a great speed without dropping the effects. Hell, they even retain the close-up of DK in the corner in all his fur-shaded beauty. Also, I absolutely adore the interactive soundtrack. I was swinging on a vine and I soundly heard a sound so I just left DK swinging there. I noticed it was a violin that was playing to my swinging. Every time I reached the apex of my swing, the violin would play a note and as I lost energy, the notes would get lower in tone. I know it's nothing new but it just blew me away.

Played some more today, I like this game more and more every time I play it. The later kingdoms have more of a classic platformer design and are trickier to navigate through. Definitely makes things more fun.

I'm gonna work on racking up the combos since I regularily only get about 600-700 beats per stage.

This is definitely a game I can see myself playing again and again though. I find tapping the sides of the bongos instead of clapping makes the game more enjoyable for me.

The soundtrack is quite good also. Agreed on the graphics. They're very eye pleasing and lush.

A 2-player mode would've been great in this game.

spoilering that and then mentioning heat flare leaves little to the imagination :lol

I will probably be picking this up next weekend. I can't wait to play it, but I need to see if my friend bought it first.

Yeah, I was thinking that too but oh well. It's not like it's much of a spoiler anyway.

Same here. I really suck at the combo system. I need more practice. I've gotten all 3 medals on the first 4 Kingdoms.

I also suck at that mini-game. My highest is 42. :(

...you're all bastards. I'm trying to be a cheapass gamer here! But no, you won't let me. You have to write glowing impressions about the game and click on the thread for me, propping my eyelids open with matchsticks and grabbing my head and moving it back and forth, forcing me to read.

Bastards.

Alright! Hit up another 2 hours or so today. Went back to the first set of 4 worlds and turned the remaining silvers to golds, and managed to turn my 1 gold to a platinum! Did the 2nd set of 4 worlds and wound up with 1 gold and 3 silvers. Getting harder, that's for sure. The next set of 4 worlds is now unlocked, but tomorrow I'm gonna go back and redo the 2nd set for golds.

Fuck that Gamespot review. Seriously. This game is incredibly awesome. I liked the Sonic reference earlier because thats what this game feels like Sonic done right.

First you have the bongos, the uniqueness factor is great, and its just more fun slamming on a bongo then repeatedly pounding A.

Then there is the INCREDIBLE graphics. Maybe the best 2-D graphics ever.

The sound... I can't say enough about how upbeat and fun it is to have these little monkeys playing music and cheering you on.

And the game design is fantastic. If there's a fault... its that the game starts of a tad slow, but the later levels with the cannons and platforming are just awesomeness. Simplistic at first, but with depth. Sure you can beat it quickly, but the game is made so its almost impossible to die... the real challenge is the medals.

Finnally a question for you guys... would it not be the coolest thing ever if they would of included Mario 1 in the game.... that you could play with the bongos? mmmmm.... bongos.

What a phenomenal game! I still haven't unlocked all the stages yet (saw the end credits though), and I only play four stages or so at a clip before I stop to give my hands a break, but other than hand pain, I don't have a single complaint. This is clearly proof that 2d platforming isn't dead.

I only get something like 56 bananas as the end of the stage smash-a-thon. I have to learn to go faster!

It would actually be pretty cool to play old platformers with the bongos.

I feel like I'm missing something critical, because I'm stuck between the 800 and 1000 mark for all stages. :/

GaimeGuy,

Combo system = Doing tricks and never touching the ground

it can easily quadruple your score ---- even if you just do a jump-pound and grab bannanas on the way down.... also, claping for bannanas you often get double for 'em.

Anybody know how to do any of the more hidden tricks? I know you can palm-slap the ground, but I've never figured out how... Also on the ice level, I did a wicked spin --- donno how tho.

Combos? Also, many worlds have at least one stage where the ENTIRE thing can essentially be done as one extended combo. So satisfying. I've passed 1350 on some worlds.

I consistently get around there at this point too, but I can see places in each stage where I could link a few more moves. I'm sure the mid-air manuvers are key, though doing them is a different matter. :lol

I've gotten a few Gold medallions, but no platinum yet...

I just earned a platinum in the Orange Kingdom--1301 beats this time.

The trick is definately a combination of mid-air combos and clapping for bananas. Use your back flip and ground stop when applicable (you could do both before clapping for beats in some cases, but the stomp will send you down quickly so clap as soon as you can).

The best places for earning beats are the areas where you can move without touching the ground. In Orange Kingdom, 2nd level, at the beginning there is a flower shooting thing. I backflipped then butt stomped into it, then it shot onto bending flowers--shooting from that to a vine towards my left added a fourth multiplier to my combo. AFtef the vine there is another bending flower that I could reach without touching the ground--I hit that and was shot up to another shooting flower, which I ground stomped into. Then I shot myself towards monkey swing thing that added another multiplier. Finally, I was launched towards a platform with a gliding bird on it. I latched on to that with a 7 combo rating without hitting the ground again and slowly moved myself towards the ground collecting the rest of the bananas with strategic claps.

With the banana collecting and combos combined in that section, I easily turned what might've been 40-50 bananas into an excess of 300 beats, pusing me towards--if not over--1100 beats at that point. I still had a few bananas and the stage bonus, so it was clear that the platinum was going to be a slam dunk.

Hopefully this example will give people an idea of how to make the combo system work for them.

I'm starting to ge the hang of the combo system. I've gotten 2 platinum medals. :D
I have 16 medals in total and I have yet to play 3 of the 8 worlds.

Ok, so after being out for a week and what little hype there was dying down - do you guys still recommend a purchase? I almost picked it up today when getting Yoshi Touch 'n Go, but was still hesitant after reading some of the reviews claiming it was too easy.

If you mean "too easy" as in, is the game easy to get the end credits, then yes. I honestly don't know how someone could die in this game.

If you mean "too easy" as in, is it easy to unlock everything, then no. The Platinum Crests are quite difficult to get.

In short, you get what you put in.

It's significantly better than Yoshi. And I like Yoshi.

Well that seals it then. I've been playing Yoshi off and on all day and I love it. If JB is even better, I'll have to pick it up right away.

DKJB is the most inventive, most fun, and downright best platform game I've played this gen, spanning all platforms.

I'm improving at a remarkable rate. I've gone for stuggling to get golds in the first couple of days to getting a platinum crest in Watermelon Kingdom with a beat total of 1592 just now!

Anyone who seriously loves platformers should get this game. There's no need to cry about the platformer being polluted by other genres or to wish that Nintendo would make a Mario game like the old NES games--DKJB is the remedy. EAD Tokyo was truly inspired with this project. It combines the speed of Sonic, the moves of Mario 64 and DKC, Punch-Out! style fighting, and a scoring system that matches the satisfaction of the some the best modern shooters. You can't ask for anything more than that.

This game is so much fun. I'm starting to get good at the combos too. Only reason I had to break was because my arms were tired.

I'd agree that DKJB is better than Yoshi. I have almost all of the Golds up the the B barrel at this point (haven't tried those levels yet), but no platinums. I ususally have around 1000 at the end of a world. I have to get better at comboing!

I cannot agree more! It is just so refreshing and sadly many people are going to think that the bongos are a gimmick but I really coulnd't see myself enjoying this with a controller. Everything just comes together to make DK: JB an absolutely excellent experience.

Didn't get a chance to play today but I will probably finish the J barrel with all platinums tommorrow.

If you want to get better at combos, really study those hint movies that play at the end of the levels. Some of them have hints at how you can initiate a combo without having to jump from vine to vine or use any of the other special environmental platforms. With just a wall, and one of the smaller monkeys, you can rack up a combo of 4. 4! Just backflip onto the wall, there's one, jump off the wall, there's two, groundpound, there's three, then grab the monkey, there's four. Just experiment, you can surely come up with your own methods of racking up combos, there is no real "trick" to it. Good luck.

It was like a switch was flipped. I went from 800 beats to 1250 in about 10 minutes. :)

and boy, the reviews were right. It DOES feel great to just breeze through a stage, executing move after move, combo after combo. It's so satisfying. :D

*hugs Nintendo Tokyo*
