Smelly, Tabris pls.
Buddy of mine moved there a year ago, seems to be doing fine with his own place working in retail full-time (back room stuff). I'm considering making the same jump with the little money I have scraped up.
If I do make the jump, I'm looking to avoid retail.
Uhm, how is that even an option in your head Quick? Vancouver is the Canadian mecca!
Regarding cost of living, just imagine downtown and direct surroundings of Toronto for cost, plus a bit extra on just your everyday costs.
What industry are you looking for, then? Did you check out workopolis for Vancouver, if retail/craigslist isn't your thing off the bat? Workopolis might give you at least an idea from afar how the situation looks like.
I've yet to do much poking around with jobs, but I will definitely do this. If anything, I can get myself transferred from my store (provided I still work there) to a location in Vancouver and rely on it until I get something better.
This plan isn't concrete, as you can tell.
Like I said, this isn't concrete. Still a back burner idea. lol
I'm partly inspired by my friend. Out of nowhere, he was invited by a couple of friends to join him and relocate to Vancouver. He filled out the necessary paperwork to get a transfer to one of the store locations there, and he just up and left. He did everything incredibly simple and straightforward.

Buildings to soar over Chinatown after Vancouver lifts height restrictions http://soc.li/kymZE0W
Yep, they are planning to revitalize Chinatown (already happening since Woodwards)
They also need to do a lot of construction to improve the streets and revitalization to push the homeless element if they plan to remove the viaducts and add that traffic down Pender and Hastings.
I work very close to Chinatown, and in just the last year, it has significantly changed. There's a lot of restaurants popping up close by and a couple new buildings completed or started. The homeless element does actually seem to be reducing.
The homeless element isn't actually even that bad. I feel more safe walking across hastings and main then I do walking around Surrey. The only crime is drug related (dealer on user, dealer on dealer) or petty crimes (don't leave anything in your car). The main concern with the traffic is just the jay walking that occurs there which slows down traffic on Hastings and Pender.
Oh and everyone has to watch this!! Harlem Shake Surrey Edition

Not really funny and overdone joke on crime in Surrey. Your post yet again shows that you rarely ever leave your apartment and walk around the Metro Vancouver area.
You are _missing out_. No Main St or Richmond? It's true, only times I go outside of Downtown Vancouver is to Kits, Commercial, Cypress Mountain, Whistler, and Airport in Richmond. And a couple of times a year to Delta to see family and old friends.
Sorry, gotta say, that the rest of Vancouver sucks in comparison.

I miss Richmond food. There's a place in the Parker Place food court that does some of the best Chinese BBQ duck in town. I miss all the Asian mall food courts in Richmond, and the Crystal too. I miss Pulp Fiction books on Main and RX Comics a few doors down. I miss T&T and the locally owned Asian markets of Fraserview. I even miss Metrotown mall.
(Of course I like downtown, and Commercial, and Kits to a lesser degree too.)
Vancouver GAF! My first Friday night in this rain soaked city! It definitely won't be the last though! What's there to do tonight? Downtown area, I don't know many people here, the two co-workers I know aren't the going out type. Had a long week working and moving here, kinda wanna take it easy Friday night, a few pints, nothing too fancy, or expensive. I'm kinda in a mood for some dancing but I'm a bit too old for (clubs) that (thirty one) any pubs? I find Gastown (near my work) to be a bit too laid back and "Hipstery"
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Just go to the Roxy, man. Don't blame in the morning, though.
I'm banned from the Blarneystone (I have no idea why, something to do with hitting on someones wife or some bullshit) but it always seemed like a place where kids with fake IDs go to me.
I haven't been in there in years so I honestly don't know if the crowd changed at all, it was definitely where my friends would bring their underage loser friends though. I'm almost positive my picture must be somewhere back there because I've tried on 4 separate occasions to get in to meet up and just been escorted out. This isn't me bragging either, it's slightly annoying since I'm usually a quiet, polite guy and I just want a real explanation for what I did.

right. Maybe next time go at the very beginning of the night and ask before the bouncers are annoyed after a 5h shift of drunk people in front of them?
No idea what you're looking for. Hipster is such an overused word that it's meaningless at this point. Gastown has the best drinking spots in the city, but you're right that they're laid back. Most are best for going out with your close friends and chatting.
Vancouverites don't really dance at pubs. It's actually likely banned because liquor laws are incredibly archaic (Hoko's Karaoke bar used to have "no dancing" signs up on the walls). In fact Vancouverites almost never dance or show interest in anything in general. Where are you from originally by the way?
It sounds like you may be interested in the Lamplighter or maybe the Cambie. Both are in the Gastown area.
Was just about to suggest this. Definitely not "hipsterish", having spent a number of years working in Gastown I do know what he's trying to get at with that statement, though "hipster" is a word I reserve for Yaletown wankers, not the Gastown crowd.
lolwut.
The word you're looking for isn't Hipster, but Yuppie.
I guess this is what I mean when I say the word is meaningless now. Have a look around the Astoria. Those are hipsters. You'll find them in Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, Commercial and definitely Gastown.

Some decent suggestions here guys, and I know exactly what I'm talking about when I say "Hipster" .
The word may not have much meaning anymore, sure, but that still does not explain the certain image young men carry everyday here, when I see them strolling about carring a six pack or a sandwich around Water, Cordova and Abbott Street. (Woodward's D)
You know the types; ginger, curly beards, shaved sides, long slick hair on top, some tribal like piercings, thick frame glasses, military green jackets, and plaid button shirts, skinny jeans (pants more common here) and so on. Anyway, enough of that.
Look at me, been here barely a week, already applying my false and absurd opinions of prople in the city.
I'm originally from TO, I would usually go to a pub and drink with four of my close friends and catch up on our week. Seems like its exact same deal here in Vanc. Friends just order pints and sit in the corner. But when you're new in town like me and left your buddies back in Toronto, kinda hard to do that
I guess I'm just trying to look for a place where there's a bit of an atmosphere and ppl are on thier feet, etc. and I like the mention of cougars, and the over 25 crowd, since I sure as hell don't want to be that old creepy guy, in a bar full of 20 year olds.
Anyway, I just arrived at my place, gonna get changed, and hit up one of the bars mentioned above.
Meeting people randomly is ultra difficult. The Cambie is probably the easiest bar for this. Probably because it's full of Australians and not ice cold Vancouverites. (I'm a Vancouverite, we're the worst)
Pretty much.Vancouver peeps seem to like meeting new people while sharing the same kind of activities. For example, rock climbing, yoga, snowboarding... etc kind of stuff. Sometimes it feels like if you don't share some kind of common interest, then people here are not interested in getting to know you. I also fall into this trap occasionally so I can understand the mentality.
Definitely start signing up to do some activities here. It's the easiest way to make new friends.
Phffft whatever, been one of the best winters in this city for a while.
Anybody excited for Squamish music festival? The line-up was announced today.
