VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican has officially recognized the state of Palestine in a new treaty.

The treaty, which was finalized Wednesday but still has to be signed, makes clear that the Holy See has switched its diplomatic relations from the Palestine Liberation Organization to the state of Palestine.

The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012 to recognize a Palestinian state. But the treaty is the first legal document negotiated between the Holy See and the Palestinian state and constitutes an official diplomatic recognition.

"Yes, it's a recognition that the state exists," said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is due to visit Pope Francis on Saturday before the canonization of two new saints from the Holy Land a day later.

The Vatican has been referring unofficially to the state of Palestine for at least a year.

During Pope Francis' 2014 visit to the Holy Land, the Vatican's official program referred to Abbas as the president of the "state of Palestine." In the Vatican's latest yearbook, the Palestinian ambassador to the Holy See is listed as representing "Palestine (state of)."

The Vatican's foreign minister, Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, acknowledged the change in status, given that the treaty was initially inked with the PLO and is now being finalized with the "state of Palestine." But he said the shift was simply in line with the Holy See's position.

I was seriously not expecting this, not from them.

Catholic =/= American Evangelical. This has been in the works for a while and the Vatican has spoken out against Israel's treatment of the Palestinians numerous times. There are a lot of Palestinian Christians being affected too by Israel that actually makes this a no brainer besides the political shitstorm of officially recognizing the state.

I can't blame him. A lot of conservative 'Catholics' in the US basically sold themselves out to the American Right during the Bush Admin.

Fake state recognises fake state.

Waiting for the Vatican to recognise the other Palestinian state in Gaza, which doesn't recognise the Palestinian state the Vatican just recognised.

Are you either Zionist Jew, Israeli, or Evangelical American, and just went with the flow, or made up your views on Palestine through examining the facts and reason?

Could someone explain to me what's the difference between Evangelical and American Evangelical?, I'm catholic and my girlfriend is evangelical, and we both agree Israel is wrong.

They are both extant, legal and universally* accepted entities.

*with a couple of exceptions to prove the rule.

That's because you exercised independent thought.

need to group everyone who doesn't agree with them by stereotype.

Ah, you're back, right on time.

I think the point is to recognize that this entity exists, or rather the group of people. Rather than pretending they aren't there while building settlements.

It's not that surprising. While a lot of American liberals have beef with the Catholic Church over its handling of abuse by clergy, role of women in the church, attitudes towards homosexuals, etc., and abortion, the Church has a heavy focus on social justice issues, and aligns pretty well with modern Democratic platforms in those respects—repeal of the death penalty, outreach for disadvantaged populations, caring for the poor, and highlighting human rights abuses. The Vatican has called out issues of the latter sort with respect to Israel's policies before, although I can't think of any real political stance they've made (it's an area I'm not familiar with, so I could be missing something recent.)

Israeli government probably thinking about building a wall around the Vatican and then shaking their fists there already is one.

I'm not sure if a two state solution is the best plan anymore personally. The way Israel has treated the Palestinans is terrible, but the way the land is divided now with Israeli's now living in parts of the land that Palestine want as a state, it just seems it won't work well I think.

I'm German. The people mostly care about the Palstinean's plight a great deal (in my experience at least) but we'll be among the last three countries to recognize their state, I fear. With our good friends Israel and the US, of course. Shamefull.

Just for fun, some data on the sentiments expressed comments on the news article for this in ynet, the most popular Israeli news site (http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-4656989,00.html).

Please note, these are comments on a popular website, treat this as you would youtube comments. Out of 69 comments:

3 mocked the Israeli response.
4 expressed support for a two-state solution.
5 expressed animosity towards Christian institutes due to "silly beliefs" or "pedophilia"
5 were about how Israel is holy and belongs to the Jewish people only.
6 commented about how the Vatican "did nothing about Stalin / Hitler" and thus cannot claim a moral high ground.
9 were accusations of anti-semitism / an "Islamic" Europe.
10 were about how this is all Netanyahu's fault / a general "Fuck you Bibi"
The rest were miscellaneous (27).

That's the point. And you know what else? A one state solution is unacceptable to Israel as well, because it would "disrupt the Jewish hegemony".

So it leaves you wondering what their long term plans are then.

Good. There are a good number of Palestinian Catholics living under occupation and quite a few of Christianities holy sites are inside the Palestinian territories. I'm sure Israel will respond to this by saying something something holocaust something something oppression of Jews by church because oppression, apartheid, and genocide are bad except when Israel does it.

No need to be aggressive with me. The only reason I asked him that is because I tend to aprecoate people who don't have a dog in the fight's opinion more. However, if he is SA member of those groups, there is a good chance that he has never thought about this issue critically.

Ireland sort that shite out wtf!

Honestly, if someone were to ask me to make a guess about weather Ireland recognized Palestine, I would have said yes. The Irish people have been much more sympathetic to the Palestinian cause than the rest of the west.

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
I look at this and wonder how much has Canada changed has to not be art of Team Green

Me too, it's embarrassing. Oh well, I think Alberta going orange is a great sign of things to come so who knows.

Then again I doubt we can really go against the grain of our big Bro to the south.
