Velma (from Scooby Doo) gets her own TV series!

Yea, they only needed to scrap the script, fire the writers, fire the animators, hire new writers, focus on what made scooby-doo fun, and not be openly racist pieces of shit.

Really isn't that hard, yet we have people defending these miserable cunts and this shitty show.

The animators?! Dude... THEY didn't write the show! LMBO! The lady in the video had it right ... She basically said what you said "focus on what made Scooby Doo fun" ... But Kaling isn't a nerd like any of us on here... She has ONE mode.

It'll be some time before I watch the first episode... Maybe May. Or June.

It‘s to be expected when people get really pissed, they turn off their brains half the time. Like The Last of Us Part 2.

”Agh, I really hate Abby, so CLEARLY I should send deaths threats to her voice actress. Because OBVIOUSLY she wrote the script, right?!”

Obviously no one should have been sent death threats period, but the extreme level of haters took an extra dose of stupid that year.

The writers always get away scott free in these situations. I’ll never forget how people barraged Kelly Marie Tran with hateful comments for her work in Star Wars Episode 8, like she wrote that character herself or something. She’s been doing mainly animated movies since then.

I hated what they did to Kelly Marie Tran. But she's gotten so much stronger. She was great in Raya!

This is Gigi. Doesn't look the same to me

Hmm...maybe so. Still, she looks like the same character to me with a different hairstyle and makeup- Maybe because they're on a date?

Oh yeah, I know pretty much all the actors (same with most of the cast in the prequels) got a lot of personal attacks. These people who take it this far are so legit batshit crazy, like a remember a few on another forum who said Rose was ugly, and while I’d say she’s okay looking, obviously calling her ugly seems too far, but then they said the actress herself was really ugly (and fat and so forth).

N1xgzgt.jpg

Like, are we talking about the same woman?! Same shit with Anne Hatheway as Catwoman, I’m not into Anne personally but I would run into a few people back in 2012 who were furious she was cast as she wasn’t “extremely sexy” in their eyes. As if beauty weren’t subjective (honestly, I’ve never been into any of the Catwoman actresses) and obviously Anne’s skill as an actress is more important anyway.

Although at this point it feels inevitable that a new Batman film will be guaranteed to have at least one casting choice that will cause a few people to freak out, only for the film to release and pretty much everyone admits it was a good choice after all. It feels like an inevitable cycle at this point.

That tearful “Dad!” line near the end of the film had so much emotion in it. And I know the cast was at a disadvantage as a lot of recording had to be done in their homes due to COVID, yet they pulled it off quite well.

Jaw is too squared. Eyes are too far apart. Probably because the nose is so wide. Looks like a photoshopped male K-pop singer. Also, is that a skirt? Suspenders and overalls? Mom pants? She has to be fanning that shit out because if that's the width of her ass she needs to become a waitress and bus tables with entire family sized entrees delivered on her ass as she moves. 2/10 would not do the sex with.

Velma discourse has run its course and is getting boring, can we just make this thread about Kelly Marie Tran now? I mean she’s not a supermodel, but damn, any guy would be lucky to land a girl like that. Certified hottie. I feel like, as is the case with most things, a small handful of people will post something hateful on Twitter, news aggregators will run with it, making it a bigger story than it needs to be, causing more idiots to jump on the bandwagon. Anyway, im not really sure what I’m talking about. I’m really drunk and smell like raw chicken from cleaning meat shelves at work all night. Y’all keep having fun talking about Velma.

You got called out for making a dumb comment. Nothing more to it.

Bruh, Claus was the one who made the dumb comment by calling for mass firings (usually an automatic dumb comment) and got called out on the fact that the animators did nothing wrong. Then rather than owning up to it, Claus chose to not even respond to the one who ripped apart their statement and went after me with the usual “it was just a joke, bro!” bullshit that people typically resort to when they get called out for saying something stupid. Ah yes, nothing “funnier” than the idea of people losing their livelihood over something they weren’t to blame for. Trust me, you can’t see it, but I’m just finally able to breathe after laughing for a whole minute at such “great” humor.

Anyway, as for YOU, stop acting like a clown and butting in before you even have a vague idea of what’s even going on. I hope you lose your job over what you just did. Hey, what? Why are you getting mad? It was just a joke, bro!

It does suck to a level which makes animation fanatics like myself cringe. But, I'm going to cringe over it and at the end of the day, it's a cartoon. Shouldn't be race wars for any form of art medium. Not defending this turd by any means but I remember when they banned Mike Judge & his team from using "fire" in Beavis & Butthead because a boy supposedly burned down his trailer (killing his sister) after seeing Beavis do it (according to the Mom). The boy spoke up as an adult and stated that they never had cable, he never watched Beavis and Butthead and the mother was using drugs. There was so much contraversy on Beavis & Butthead and didn't start a war. Or to touch a bit closer -- watch Ralph Bakshi's "Coonskin." The movie actually portrays how elite white Hollywood or John Q. Public viewed black people in the 1970's. Everyone shouted racism but in recent years people who've seen it in the black community admitted it's one of the most accurate depictions in animation of how things were. Velma will never have a cultural impact like that. By the way, they did want a war over that film. Noise was so big outside Bakshi's producer studios that they were advised to scrap an entire early version of "Hey, Good Lookin'" ; a movie which he later remade almost entirely in the early 80's.
I didn't mean just this show, but all the shift in entertainment.

Well I watched the first episode out of macabre fascination. It's definitely one of the worst-written shows ever made. One needs to watch it to truly appreciate it - simply reading or viewing the reactions of others cannot fully communicate how terrible it is.

A weird aside: it's like Mindy forgot how to act. She's doing voice acting here, and it's easily her worst performance. Her voice performance feels unenthusiastic, almost as if she knew she was making a piece of crap and was phoning it in.

Really, if you have HBO Max or some other service outside of the 'States that is hosting it, watch the first episode. It will make you appreciate all other TV shows just a little bit more.

I feel like after everything we've written...that's almost where we need to go if this thread discussion continues. Just watch an episode if you don't believe it's that bad. Or since Scappy Doo used to be the most hated thing from the Scooby Doo franchise, watch an episode of the Scooby & Scrappy show from 1977 and then watch one episode of Velma. It won't be hard to say then where they've villianized the whole animated cast rather than Scrappy just pissing people off as he was added in 77 to bring ratings back to Scooby Doo.

John Dee and his 'conversations'. What he brought to them and what they gave back.

A dark mirror.

It's interesting how often reality/the universe plays pantomime with us on stuff. In this case it may be something as prosaic as a bad adaptation of Scooby Doo.
These shows, as national culture, sometimes point to the zeitgeist when many factors line up. Millennial influence is fading and Gen Z is beginning to strongly exert itself with the eldest hitting their mid 20s and the youngest approaching adult self-assertiveness. The show appears to mark the tipping point as it brought out vulnerable quarrelsome people to yell at clouds. In many cases by only being shown a picture of a cloud and not seeing the weather for themselves. There's a subtext of nascent self-awareness from the cultural allegory in the show that points to Gen Z as they mature into the dominant cultural force that through self expression and reflection will be less easily manipulated by emotions than Millennials were by youtubers and cropped images.

Personally I think rian Johnson stuck her in a garbage bag ,gave her the dumb hair cut and make up to look awful at Kathleen Kennedy's request, Kelly Marie Tran is significantly better looking than daisy ridley, and she couldn't have her proxy being upstaged could she?

Just personally, the show isn't funny, it keeps trying to be this weird sense of edgy that gets more annoying as it tries. Like for example, Velma the character is written like someone who has heard of Daria but never seen it. They know she's aloof, quick with a sarcastic come back, and believes she's better than society, but none of the reflection Daria had. Daria is surrounded by people who aren't as pathetic as she believes them to be and her learning and coming to an understanding of that is what makes her endearing. It's too soon to judge but it doesn't feel Velma is headed that way and thus she just comes off as insufferable. Doesn't help that the rest of the cast are worse than she is. Norvel constantly not trying to be a stoner stereotype isn't funny and neither is his "beta male" tendencies. Fred is literally just an unfunny joke, they do nothing with him but make fun of him the moment he's on screen. That twitter post going around with the four moments they talk about Fred is literally all they do with him. Daphnie is forgettable and doesn't feel like she's there for any other reason than sexual tension.

The show just doesn't feel like it was made in any form of earnest. Like it was made to be hated. I don't believe it was, I believe the writer thought they were funny or smart, but it doesn't feel that way.
When viewing the characters and situations as they appear to Velma as narrator, their portrayal makes more sense and is well written. The characters appear to have been broken down to basics and recontextualized from the perspective of a 21st century Velma at that age. The latest two episodes seem to have developed Daphne further than love interest with an investigation of her own going on.

Yeah, All the problems with Rose Tico had nothing to do with Tran herself. That said, I still would have preferred the actress who played her sister to have had the major role instead of her. She was great in Furie.

Obviously no one should have been sent death threats period, but the extreme level of haters took an extra dose of stupid that year.

Why do people cherry pick these extremely rare messages (as reprehensible as death threats are) and pretend they represent all of the annoyed and angry people at the ridiculousness that is the script and characters of TLOU2, when you can't find threats of violence in 99.9% of annoyed people?

Oh, I actually know, it's an easy way to dismiss criticism, like you are doing now.

Yeah, it seems like they are trying to do a sort of "comedy of manners" wherein they satirize contemporary attitudes and outlook. It's not particularly funny but if you watch it as a lampoon of the excesses of wokism through a particularly media-centric lens- some of the gags actually land.

I get why everyone hates it, especially those most enmeshed in the culture wars themselves- but its pretty depressing to see how very few people seem to actually care about anything beyond the surface level - stuff like the deconstruction of a "beloved" franchise and the fact that Velma is so (deliberately) unlikable.

The third episode is built around a sort of combat tournament at school to find the "least vulnerable" female student, and is actually a pretty sharp satiric angle to rip on the way "aspirational" female characters are presented in modern media. I honestly struggle to see how any of it could be read as being the sort of "unbearable wokist propaganda" that people are claiming.

These types of folks have never used logic or critical thought. Take a look at all the people trying desperately to pretend the show is actually deep with a critical look at the modern social landscape. Then look at who those people are and their history of slacktivist tendencies.

So bad it's good? It sounds like it has nothing to do with Scooby Doo.
As someone who loves to watch truly awful movies for fun, no. The show is too self-loathing to laugh at even ironically, because the show is trying and failing to laugh at itself the whole time.

The cringey ultra-woke rhetoric that Velma spouts is not played straight, like literally everything else in the show its an inversion for ironic "laughs".
That's the problem, EVERYTHING in this is played for some kind of irnonic meta humor.

It doesn't just break the fourth wall, it fails to ever build one in the first place. It spends so much time snarking at itself that it rarely ever lets the characters talk to each other as characters. Everything is a joke about how terrible the characters are, delivered with cold, ironic distance, to the point where the characters barely even feel like characters at all.

Completely agree.

The thing that's kinda bothered me though is that so much of the criticism the show's getting is failing to address its real failings, instead being totally mired in culture warrior "us versus them"-isms.

I'd welcome a show that takes pot-shots at excessive wokism, because its basically self-evidently silly to me. But it worryingly also strikes me that it might be impossible right now; not just because the gap between reality and parody has got so thin in the worst cases recently, but because the topic is such a sacred cow to some that its almost inconceivable that anyone could mock it. Everyone has to be sincerely on one side of the aisle ideologically or the other.

Shout out to South Park, though, for managing to slaughter sacred cows on both sides and not fall into the chasm.
