Did any of you guys actually try watching it? I watched it with very low expectations since it seems to be universally panned by left and right. Plus I don't like Scooby Doo anyway so don't care if they ruin it. I have to admit I laughed a few times. Wasn't that bad to me.
It seems best to watch something objectively before forming an opinion instead or echoing one given, but that's not how some people are. These uniformed opinions have little to do about the show.

The humour was more moderate and organic than shoehorning things in or pure unchallenging blandness that loud online people seem to appreciate.

Anti-white humor is probably the safest humor left around - yet those that rely on it think it's edgy!
It's just as lazy as the "breaking the fourth wall" humor that plagues unfunny shit nowadays.
Anti-southern humor is much safer. Much smaller group to offend, and pretty much no one defends them.

I havent seen it and dont plan to since Ive never watched Scooby Doo. But Mindy Kaling can do no wrong. The Mindy Project is pretty much the spirtual successor to the Office in my mind.

Looking at this thread.. she was right.

People are way too triggered these days.
This isn't about being "triggered" by one show. I don't have a problem with racial jokes in general, but society has shifted from tolerance to being openly racist toward white people. Honestly, tell me a white person could make a show or make public statements like these without receiving immense backlash and even loss of employment if they said the same thing about any other race? Dave Chappel is my favorite comedian, and he made fun of white people all the time with some pretty hilarious impersonations, but he was never so cynical about it.

Also, what's the point of a comedy show where the main character is just a pos? Where is the joke in there? Velma herself seems to be one of the biggest criticisms of the show because of how abrasive and unlikable of a character she is.

Man, i wonder why this won't be renewed for a second season... 🤔
I almost don't even believe this is real but apparently it is.

Absolute garbage.

It's almost like it's purposely garbage.

Well, is a possibility. Social media is all about politic those days, but when you make a show that both sides hate is get suspicious.

People are talking about a new/old concept of mentality: Hate watching.

I don't even know if is lucrative doing this, but indeed get engage over social media with people posting clips about what they hate about.

If I had colon cancer and the only way to be cured would be to watch this show, I would rather shit myself to death in utter agony. At least it would be less painful.

It doesn't sound like it's the shows fault for your obstinance.
So you're saying that the advertisement for it was misleading and the show actually isn't a complete pile of dogshit like the trailed has led me to believe?

Because that's what the trailer is supposed to do - sell me on the show. And it didn't So why would I waste my time subjecting myself to the whole thing?

I didn't watch the trailer. What convinced me to watch the show was the prescriptive of being informed about the subject directly to see what everyone is missing, intentionally or not, that is getting them worked up. That it turned out to be mildly entertaining satire was a bonus.

Did Fred...just rip off one of students leg? Is this supposed to be a comedy or something?
Also Fred has now brain damage, big surprise...
Cheap regurgitated shock comedy and nothing new. Not done remotely well. Seems like the newest Beavis & Butthead writers would have had fun satire with these modern streaming shows.

Anyway, to paraphrase Frank Welker (who voiced Fred from 1969 - present...minus this garbage fire) stated, "Fred's the straight guy (which that wasn't in reference to today's modern gender politics). You know the leader of the group and the only one with a license." Mindy and the writers of this turd weren't happy with Fred being a leader...he's a white man and because he owned/drove the Mystery Machine...he must be rich too. Welker also has voiced every Scooby Doo related series since 1969 (over 30 at least if we're counting all the direct-to-video releases too). He was never asked to be part of this and I doubt he minded that either.

So is it it better to not watch it, or watch one episode and then stop?

I'm inclined to believe option 2 sends a better message that this is shit, stop making it.

The person that's voice acting her is south asian apparently and she or the writers wanted Velma to be race swapped iirc.

I'm South Asian and I'm skipping this

I hate Mindy Kaling. Always came off as annoying cunt lol

Let's be honest here, Velma was never likeable in any of the Scooby-Doo series.

Kill it with fire.
Man...at some of these comments. :(

Mindy Kaling can definitely be annoying, but watch the Prime original "Late Night," and I think it will change a lot of minds. I re-watch that one probably once every two or three months. Sure, the movie itself is a little low-rent -- think Amazon wasn't willing to put too much money into it -- but the story's got a lot of heart.

Plus, she's a GREAT voice match for the character, Thelma, who, well, always was an annoying cunt. But come on, folks, no nostalgic affection for the character? At all? You fuckers are dead inside.

Easily the safest. White people in general are chill and dont go nuts if people crack jokes about them. Even more amazingly since in Canada/US (and probably just about all European countries), the majority population are going to be White. So you'd think with tons more Whities it should mean way more pushback, but there isn't.

As crazy as it seems going by social media and government, there's more White people concerned about minorities getting flak in media, than being protective of their own light skinned heritage getting joked on.

Yrah, I mean the only way I could possibly be offended is by the quality of the jokes.

It's offensively unfunny, and them doing the same thing again and again and again is very old by now.

But does it hurt my feelings? Do I feel unsafe?

Lol, fuck no

Oh come on. She clearly did this as a favor to her brother. I mean now when people ask what's the worst thing this family ever did they'll say "Scooby doo" and not "Pretend to be black to get into med school." (Yes, he did it as a joke.)

https://screenrant.com/velma-season-2-renewed-hbo-max-report/

According to the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), Velma season 2 is in the works at Warner Bros. and HBO Max. The registry shows Velma season 2 on its own and a list of 11 episodes. The news comes just a couple of days after the premiere of episodes one and two on HBO Max.

Screw HBO max and discovery. Cancel programs like the nevers and shovel in all the crappy reality shows and Velma.

They canceled Close Enough, which was a great show but instead are showing something that... I have never heard one positive thing about Velma. Everyone hates it.

I have a feeling she came to them with some other show idea, they rejected it but realized they had this IP sitting around so they handed it to her. Her response to not getting to do what she wanted is to essentially shit on this IP. The result is this cynical, mean spirited pile of shit that is not funny. At this point it seems like they are just churning out things from a list of "what would piss the fans of this IP off the most". The whole point of owning IPs is to leverage them to exploit a built in fanbase. This new strategy of turning these people away and vilifying them doesn't seem to be working out too well but I hope they continue until their financial demise. Hopefully when the bankruptcy fire sale has to happen someone who actually has some reverence for these properties can purchase them.

What's crazy is that HBO/WB discovery's pulse doesn't shake when it comes to cancelling garbage and even shelving it before launch, but somehow they thought it was a good idea to release this and are doubling down for a second season.

Nostalgia? Sorry bro but I don't remember any black Velma in the Scooby-Doo they aired on TV when I was a kid.

This shit is hilarious. Not only they are incapable of creating something new (with characters of every race you want) due to lack of creativity but they also have to whatever-wash white characters because of muh representation.

It's quite ridiculous if you ask me.

The plot of the show itself was interesting.
Velma appears to be under hypnotic suggestion to prevent her from solving crimes.

Having watched the first couple of episodes I can confirm its pretty damn terrible, but probably for different reasons than you'd think judging from the coverage.

It seems to me its trying to parody both sides (PC and non-PC) culturally, kinda like South Park does, but doing so badly. This is why it taking flak from both sides.

The cringey ultra-woke rhetoric that Velma spouts is not played straight, like literally everything else in the show its an inversion for ironic "laughs".

Trouble is, despite it all playing out at the hyperactive pace of a Rick & Morty, endlessly self-aware and media referential, laughs are kinda few and far between.

It feels like a show calculated to irritate internet culture warriors on both sides, something that I'd give it a lot more credit for if it was a funnier than it is.
