Verge: Moto X to be revealed Aug 1

At this point, all I need to see are camera samples before I decide to buy. I have a GS3 now and don't mind going from a 4.8" display to 4.7". 4.3 would have been a deal-breaker, and 4.5 would have been a maybe. 2200mAH battery is perfectly fine, as I have 2100mAH now and almost never have trouble getting through the day with it even when I've got my wifi turned off all day. I'm expecting a price of closer to $350-400 than the $200 figure that keeps getting tossed around, but I have no problem buying at that price point.

I'm expecting a price point that rocks the industry, as Moto's CEO discussed last month. When you can buy a cutting edge Nexus 7 for $250, consumers should expect a midrange phone to cost equal or less.

It's more expensive to do smaller devices.

Those "smaller devices" you talk about are manufactured in 100x more quantities. Iphones are viewed as high end devices, and they cost ~200$ to be produced and assembled. MotoX will be far from highend.
These "tear down" costs never include:
Manufacturing costs
Labor
Patent/Royalties
Shipping

Not to mention R&D and marketing.

This thing gonna be so sexy.

MotoX will also have to have cellular chips in every one of them unlike that cheap version of the Nexus 7. They are not directly comparable at all.

im not sure i see the point in a nexus 5.

if the moto x is basically a nexus 4 with LTE and key lime pie at 200 bucks then theyve made the perfect phone for most people and myself.

Moto X isn't a Nexus device. It won't ship with 4.3 more than likely. Moto may get it on their devices faster since it won't be skinned to death like Touchwiz, but its still not a Nexus.

I don't know what's wrong with you guys $300 for a device of those specs off contract is amazing. $250 would awesome, but I doubt it..

I'm talking about for a 16gb model here

There's no way they shit out another 8 GB phone. Pyro, plz.
READ IT AGAIN BRAH. I said the cheaper sku will be the 16gb one. Actually I guess what I said was confusing but meant even if it's 199/249 then that will also be 16/32. Which seems too cheap so that's why it will be 249/299.

off topic but... does Topolsky even write for the Verge anymore? I never see his name on articles and his account says last log in was June? I must have missed something.

that wouldn't jive with what they've been hinting at considering that would be the same as the nexus 4. I'll say 199/249 or 249/299 seems like the right price. 249 being for 16gb.

Nexus has lower storage though. :/

But don't misunderstand, I don't want to be right at all.

$199 off contract means I'm buying two of those bastards on Day 1

Then again, I'd want the 32GB.

edit:

I share the same view!

He's EIC. EICs don't write a lot - mostly op eds or a review they really want on their own. They're making overall Editorial decisions, accepting story pitches, etc.

Considering they have over 60 staffers on the Verge right now, I don't think he needs to write.

Can't see it unless they're going out for an all-out gamechanger. With their "Assembled in 'murica" selling point I don't think they're going for the true low-end. I think $299 16GB, $349 32GB sounds about right. Still half the price of an iPhone off-contract.

I'm thinking 299, but I want to be so wrong.

Me too, maybe even 349. If it really has LTE radios for all the carriers, I could easily see it doing 299 to 349. I find it hilarious that people have allowed their expectation to dip down to $249. That's not happening. The Nexus 5 didn't have LTE and it was a copy/paste of an already existing LG phone with a mediocre camera. Assuming this phone improves in those areas, there's going to be a higher cost for sure.

well they pretty much said their pricing will be GAME CHANGINGGG or something along that line, so releasing a phone with the same price as the nexus 4 doesn't really change much. It's not bad but that kind of wording makes me think cheaper.

Bingo. $600+ 16GB superphones.

I was going to buy the next iPhone (C, not S) and claim it on my taxes as work related since it's supposed to be "cheaper" but I doubt it'll hit the same price-range as the Moto X.

Great features (plus good battery life if all goes well) and a killer price could move a ton of X's this summer.

As long as we get a 32GB model for a bit more (whether that's 250 or 300) this is a total steal. ~50 bucks on-contract for a brand new, sexy, battery-efficient phone ftw. We'll see on Aug 1st for sure how it's all going to shake out, I guess.

Just packed up my Galaxy S4 and sent my HTC One packing a week ago....Moto X will be my new Android phone and if it really is $299 than Moto is back baby...if it sucks i`ll sell it and just keep my new Nexus 7

I want a low price, but with mostly the same internals as the new Droids, I don't see Motorola undercutting those devices with vastly lower prices. Google could potentially subsidize some of the cost, but why would they do that with just this phone?

200 is freaking crazy, what the hell is it's competition spec wise besides nexus 4? If it is 299 it will sell a shitload, I mean even if its 399 what other phones out there compare at 399? Off contract phone prices are freaking high in the US.

Especially since the claim is Google is treating them as a separate company.

For example, when the Googy engineers went over Moto after the acquisition, they had to give up their Googy badges.

Can we even call the mid tier? It s more like a low mid range phone to me.

edit: I mean its a good deal for 200 but...
