Simplicity is a fine strategy.

Google better throw in 12 months of free cloud music to entice me to buy it.

Get her a Xiaomi.

Xiaomi worth more than HTC, Blackberry, and what Moto would've been, closing in on Nokia:
http://shanghaiist.com/2013/07/28/new_funding_round_values_xiaomi_at_10_billion_usd.php

My mom actually is still using a Nokia something right now. I don't live near her so I can't really throuble shoot any Android phone issue for her. But if she want a smart phone, the low end Xiaomi or the Meizu would be pretty good options.

Its not my fault that google aim so low. It's a good phone for my mom.

I wouldn't say they're aiming low. More that they're aiming differently, which I think it makes sense. Do most consumers care about the fastest processor? 720p vs. 1080p? Or do they care about user-friendly software, battery life, and price?

My mom is in the market for a new phone, she just doesn't want to put up the big bucks for a flagship device. Depending on the specs and price, Moto X just might be what she's looking for.

It (low cost smartphone) actually doesn't work in a country like the US where prepaid smartphone plan doesn't exist. If you are going to have to pay minimal 60 for data plan anyway, you might as well get a better phone.

If in this country you can get a 300 min plan + 2GB of LTE data for say $40 a month then cheap smartphone make sense.

Actually it does work. I use a nexus device and use a 30$ 5GB plan. I pay 50$ instead to get 300m and 5GB of data. This one would work the same way but also have LTE.

So Im very interested. Ignore it if you personally don't want it and stick with your phone subsidies, but I like my options. Thx.

And lol @ the sudden "cheap phones don't sell" thing. I thought 99% of smartphones sold because they were free or low cost at upgrade time/contract renewal?

There are quite a few prepaid options in the US. They are still lagging behind in customer perception, but I'd say they are gaining steam (especially with Straight Talk Walmart push).

I have the Walmart plan too. But it's like hidden feature. You can't actually recommend it to people. You can not just buy a T-Mobile sim off local deli store and use it. In any classic prepaid dominated cellphone market, you can casually buy a sim with tons of data options from a 7-11 store. This is not the case in this country You have to activate it with a Walmart purchased (dumb) phone.

Plus, T-Mobile can kill it any time.

If google really want to be prepaid friendly, they wouldn't have made it nanosim anyway. Fuck google.

You hear me google? Fuck off

That's my receipt from T-Mobiles website. I never stepped foot into a Wal-Mart, never did anything with any dumbphones. I just went to T-Mobiles website and paid a buck and 7 cents and they mailed me the SIM and instructions.

Put the SIM in my phone. Followed the instructions, clicked the $30 plan on their website and I was done.

I think it depends on the area. I have tons of free TMo prepaid sim. And I have tried to activate the walmart plans a few times. Every time the website ask me call to activate it.

There are plenty of posts on howardforum stating that without a "good" IMEI number, you can't activate the plan. I am just telling you it happen to other people too.

T-Mo doesn't have to force people jump through loops, but they choose to.

I guess we shouldn't see the phone market as some linear progression. Some phones are made with different people and tasks in mind.

I'm looking forward to their presentation, the anandtech in depth review, and ifixit teardown. So many positive things about this phone already but there's still much to learn about in detail.

And the cheapest China phone has a bigger battery.

Specs-wise its around the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5.

No it's not. It is rumored to have the latest Krait 300 cores and an Adreno 320 GPU. Considering it is only driving a 720p screen, it should feel even snappier in day-to-day use than a Galaxy S4 or HTC One.

I'm a software engineer and I can appreciate good design. Quad core provides zero benefit based on the way Android works. You only have one app in the foreground at a time. Background tasks are by nature not CPU intensive. Plus, there's no point to a 1080p screen when you can't even see the pixels at 720p.

I'm curious as to how different a phone like this would compare to a flagship phone like an s4. For day-to-day use are there any differences?

Holy shit, dude.

tino's strong point isn't understanding things without mirrors and focus rings.

actually, this is, what, the 4th time you repeated this, and for the 4th time you've been wrong. Please, for your own sake, stop shouting your ignorance from the rooftops

Random thoughts on the Moto X before the big unveiling tomorrow. Respond to any point using the number. Thanks for all the comments, +1s, and shares this last week. It's been fun hyping this device up.

1. I believe that 97% of the details surrounding the Moto X have already leaked, but I'm certain there are a couple surprises left. Any guesses?

2. I was never able to confirm the rumor that units had shipped to carrier stores. You would think that some rogue retail employee would have leaked a pic if there were boxes sitting in the back, but how did Best Buy keep the Chromecast stock a secret?

3. I still believe online pre-sales will start tomorrow. I'm told they will be sold at Motorola.com and not the Google Play store. The online configurator should offer more customization options that people are expecting.

4. Rumored pricing for Moto X off-contract has been anywhere from $199 to $599. I honestly don't know what the final price is, but Google has the ability to hit any price point they desire. I think a base price of $499 would disappoint, $399 would be a good value, $299 would make most people happy, and $199 would signal that Google is scared of Samsung.

5. Speaking of pricing, don't expect a big discount if you are buying a carrier locked version.

6. Props to Motorola for trying something new with the camera. They are the only ones using this new Clear Pixel camera, and it could be the best camera on any Android phone. Should have great low-light performance like the HTC One, more detail like the GS4, and video at 1080p 60 FPS.

7. Also glad to see Moto pick a display that offers the best picture and power consumption, instead of just going for highest-resolution. Moto is calling this the worlds first interactive LED display. It has uniform RGB sub-pixel arrangement (non-pentile).

8. Most underated feature could be Motorola Connect. Not much is known about this feature, but it's an app that connects the Moto X to the desktop Chrome browser (think Airdroid functionality). There might also be some new functionality for Chromecast.

9. In case you missed it, the rumored Motorola xWATCH has been shelved until a later date.

10. Moto X will probably lose out on a couple benchmark wars with the One/GS4 since it only has 2 CPU cores instead of 4, but the day-to-day performance will be comparable. All devices have the same Adreno 320 GPU, so gaming performance will also be the same.

11. I definitely contributed to building up the hype, but Moto did an excellent job of creating buzz for this launch. It will be really hard for the final product to live up to the hype we created, but it has a chance if they price it right.

12. Don't remember if this leaked, but Moto X has a SmartBoost Speaker with Smart Bass up to 3watts. Also does virtual 5.1 surround sound with headset.

13. Moto X features the same "stock Android" as seen on the new Droids, but with less carrier bloatware. There will be some Moto specific apps like the camera, and other widgets. Moto will promise faster Android upgrade cycles than other OEMs.

I'm very very hyped with this phone.

If I could buy (please, sell it, at least, throuh google store in Europe), I will buy it ASAP

Btw, when is the conference?

Moto X isn't a Nexus device. It won't ship with 4.3 more than likely. Moto may get it on their devices faster since it won't be skinned to death like Touchwiz, but its still not a Nexus.

it's not a nexus but i don't think google would bother competing with itself that directly unless the philosophy of each phone is hugely different. i'm guessing this is the new nexus.

you can perceive it, but the cost and performance/battery drain of 1080p just isn't worth it right now.

He said there was no point, there is. It is more of a battery drainer but considering the S4 and the One have some of the best batteries in the business right now, it is worth it in a lot of people's eyes.

As a Galaxy Nexus user, this looks like it's shaping up to be a Nexus 4 with LTE and better back design that won't shatter when dropped?

I'm in.

As much as I love my Galaxy Nexus the occasional slowdown and shit-ass battery it driving me nuts.

Apparently the camera's also supposed to be really good but I'm not believing it until I see it, been burned by similar claims too many times.

I'm in the very same boat.
