Verge: MS launching Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment on other platforms, Sea of Thieves later in 2024

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
But if it’s just those 3 this will be the greatest PR blunder in the history of gaming, lol.

Your line of thinking makes no sense .. they're not holding a podcast just to announce 3 ports. They'll most likely be discussing the future of the brand, if there's any disc-less SKU coming soon or possibly when and what the next gen window might start. If they just wanted to announce the ports, this is a simple news-wire blog post ala Ori 2.

What he says makes perfect sense when he refers to that hypothetical as a "PR blunder". I mean.....your post is basically agreeing with that, isn't it?

Totally destroyed brand reputation and let the drama fester for two weeks to tease some hardware in a podcast? If so, godspeed.

It will be a major shift in strategy way beyond two small games and one old service title. Thinking otherwise is pure military-grade copium.

Or MS just thinking about a PR suicide, good for them, I guess.

Does anyone think they are going to stop with these three games? Or, the two other rumored titles? I expect by the next generation Xbox Microsoft Gaming will be porting most games to the other two consoles and only hold back on what titles they deem as significant to the Xbox brand.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.

The higher the budget, the more likely it is that game is coming to other platforms. The Xbox market is not big enough to make big budget AAA games viable anymore.

No, clearly Microsoft is easing into PlayStation/Switch ports much like Sony did with PC ports. And remember, this same Tom Warren said he knew "for a fact" that another big Xbox game was coming to PlayStation.

This is just the start. Kinda feel bad for all the warriors on here who have championed gamepass.

But we're still getting all the new games on game pass day 1, doesn't seem like any reason to stop championing it. 🤷‍♀️

Not sure which part agreed with his post. I agree with the part that the podcast won't just be about announcing 3 ports. I don't agree with the PR Blunder part.

"they're not holding a podcast just to announce 3 ports"

That's pretty much what he was saying my man. That's what he said would be the "PR blunder". That's how I read it anyway.

You cannot place the blame on consumers for opting into an amazing value proposition like GP offered. That is a Microsoft/Xbox strategy failure, not the consumer's fault.

Yeah, I agree with that.

Every game they have released has also released on Steam to purchase at full price.

Other than Starfield and the Forza Horizon games, not many have proven to be sales successes.

Palworld is the recent evidence which shows if the game is sought after enough then more people will opt to purchase it than they will to rent it via a subscription.

Salient point. It got me to swap my main brands from playstation on PS4 to Xbox on Series X for this generation. If putting out ports later to other consoles means all their new stuff keeps releasing day 1 on game pass, I'm ok with that.

Penitent and Sea of Thieves were lauded by critics and players alike. Not sure why there is question about the quality of those experiences.

I have my opinions on Sea of Thieves, but pentiment is a niche title and is never going to sell a huge amount regardless of the platform.

The reality is that there are very few games in their catalogue that they can release which will light up the sales charts on Playstation and Switch.

We tried telling everyone. So much mental gymnastics and arguments back in the day as if we didn't have dozens of streaming services to draw comparisons from. They all end up the same in the end. Stagnant, hit a wall. So they either raise prices, lessen the quality of content investment, or find other avenues for revenue. Or, all of the above.

That dream of 100 million subs in the short order he was hoping was always a folly.

But they got to play these games without paying full retail price on each. That's somehow a dig on them?
Sure, you got to rent the games for "cheap". If all you care about is renting games then good for you. Clearly, MS are losing money with gamepass. That's why they're starting to move games multi-plat. You playing games without paying retail has put MS in this situation.

Once (if) marquee games like Halo, Forza, and Gear of War make their way to PlayStation, then the Xbox Series X will for all intents and purposes be the last Xbox console I own. If they do go this route, I really don't understand why they would even bother with releasing another Xbox console unless it's just a handheld like Steam-Deck and not a dedicated console at all.

Even if Microsoft doesn't intend to ever release the heavy hitters (Starfield, Indy, etc..) on Playstation, there is absolutely no way they are going to be able to believably communicate that to consumers at this point.

They're actively creating an expectation of "eh, I'll just wait until it comes to Playstation" for their first party titles.

They either need to go all in to exclusivity or all in to publishing on all platforms. This muddled, noncommittal, milquetoast approach benefits no one.
Or they can simply say which game is totally exclusive, which game is temporary exclusive and which game will be released on day one..... It's simply a matter of honesty 🤗

But of course, this is a business and they can hardly anticipate and submit to decisions that may limit them in the future or in the present in the midst of a judicial process against the FTC, which will not hesitate to use any assertion of exclusivity in their favor. .

Of course, MS has it quite complicated or impossible to send a message that creates certainty or reduces negative impacts.
