But we're still getting all the new games on game pass day 1, doesn't seem like any reason to stop championing it. 🤷‍♀️

Not sure which part agreed with his post. I agree with the part that the podcast won't just be about announcing 3 ports. I don't agree with the PR Blunder part.
You do realise how much of a hypocrite you are, right? One minute you're lauding MS for making games exclusive. Now you're saying it's fine those games are everywhere because you can rent them on gamepass. The line under your name is perfect. You're a corporate shill, and you're proud of it!

Sure, you got to rent the games for "cheap". If all you care about is renting games then good for you. Clearly, MS are losing money with gamepass. That's why they're starting to move games multi-plat. You playing games without paying retail has put MS in this situation.
Imagine how low those subs would have been if they came right out of the game with the current pricing model and not the beginning years of loss leading with $1 exploits and practically giving them away in bags of Doritos.

They're actively creating an expectation of "eh, I'll just wait until it comes to Playstation" for their first party titles.

They either need to go all in to exclusivity or all in to publishing on all platforms. This muddled, noncommittal, milquetoast approach benefits no one.

Sure? Sony’s found the middle ground, with late PC ports.
Of course the clear rebuttal is that PCs and consoles don’t overlap as well as two competing consoles do…but it’s still a middle ground with timed exclusivity.

‘Benefits no one’ is a stretch, especially if they’re able to sell decently on the other platform(s).

We tried telling everyone. So much mental gymnastics and arguments back in the day as if we didn't have dozens of streaming services to draw comparisons from. They all end up the same in the end.

That dream of 100 million subs in the short order he was hoping was always a folly.
I always thought Microsoft's strategy with subscriptions and a gradual transition to cloud streaming replacing consoles would take at least a decade (closer to mid -2030s) for the strategy to payoff for them. Seeing as to how they are the richest company in the world, they could have ridden the low periods for a long time. However, it seems they have decided to fold after a bad hand which tells me they are not strong of conviction and leadership is too feeble.

This the perfect double feature.
It truly is. Its going to be bittersweet for me as at least a few of you guys will finally see what Xbox fans like me have been raving about. It'll be cold comfort to hear we were right to love these, because it'll be too late. A sad commentary on the industry when games this unique and this amazing fail to move the needle in system sales or awards when you see the crap that does.

If gaming burnout was in the ICD 10 as a medical diagnosis, this double feature would be the cure. You can start with a brilliantly written history piece with gorgeous art and music, with choice and a story that treats you like an adult. Then move on to pure, crystallized fun and good vibes with a 2023 Dreamcast era action game brought to life with perfect art and music and genuinely fun characters. I literally rated both games as 10/10. They're some of the best games ever made.

So if a company is offering you a great deal, it's the consumers fault for taking it instead of feeling bad and saying "No, please take my money"?

You didn't pay for it so neither will I.

Once again, you have me wrong. I bought the deluxe edition day one on steam and I bought the deluxe upgrade on xbox. Yes I played primarily on xbox but I purchased a copy.

I really can't stress how wrong you guys have me. Did no one teach you about making assumptions?

The haptics on Hi-Fi Rush are going to be glorious. The definitive Edition on PS5.

The haptic were also added to the PC version in recent weeks but I'm yet to revisit it and we don't yet know how they might compare to a PS5 version.

Although I do think they will announce a new Xbox controller with haptics and revised triggers during Thursdays podcast thingy.

So if a company is offering you a great deal, it's the consumers fault for taking it instead of feeling bad and saying "No, please take my money"?

Sometimes all it comes down to is the question of "is this worth owning?".

The answer as been no more often than not.

And therein lies the two-fold issue they have faced. If the games they are releasing are not good enough to attract new subscribers to gamepass in order to continue growth, then they certainly aren't good enough for people to consider purchasing outright.

Yes, exactly this

Microsoft releasing games on Playstation consoles
They’ve always done this and have stated plenty of times that they will review games on a case by case basis. Not only this, but they even have been pretty open about keeping Activision / Blizzard games on all platforms. Which is why they kept having companies sign those 10-year deals, including Nintendo and Sony.

Meanwhile these games are currently on other consoles, more here https://www.giantbomb.com/xbox-game-studios/3010-340/published/.

Minecraft
Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft Legends
Psychonauts 2
Ori
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Ori and the Blind Forest
Super Lucky’s Tales
Cuphead
Banjo Kazooie
Deathloop

This isn’t a new thing that Microsoft is doing, it’s something they have been doing. I don’t suspect Halo Gears or Forza making their way to other consoles, unless it’s done through gamepass.

You are playing both sides of the argument. You are saying GamePass caused Microsoft/Xbox to fail because it made people forgo paying full retail price while at the same time you are saying the games are not good enough to have been sold at full retail price LMAO.

Salient point. It got me to swap my main brands from playstation on PS4 to Xbox on Series X for this generation. If putting out ports later to other consoles means all their new stuff keeps releasing day 1 on game pass, I'm ok with that.

I don’t care if they put the games on other consoles day one, let the other fanbases pay $70 a pop so I can play them all day one for $40-50 a year 🥰

Is it port begging when one company decides to push titles to other consoles?

It's port begging when you selectively ignore that they've always done this, and scream out "Everything is coming, especially the games I really want!!!!!". You guys keep falling back on this notion of a "slippery slope" like they used to say about marijuana users to discourage youth from using it. Does them choosing to release this on another platform:

Mean this is coming?

Personally I don't think so. Do you think it's a coincidence two of the games are capable of running on the Switch and the other is a service game designed to milk money?

Minecraft
Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft Legends
Psychonauts 2
All of those were legacy obligations
Deathloop
It was comissioned as PS5 exclusive lol

Other titles are games from external devs.

Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are titles form internal teams with no binding obligations to release on both PS5 or Switch. It's totally different.

That's a lot of words to say nothing mister Warren.
Fable could be the only IP I'm interested in though.

I don't know the details about all those games, but a lot of them have contractual obligations behind them. Minecraft, Psychonauts 2 and Deathloop, in particular. Microsoft was handing out 10 year deals left and right in order to impress regulators.

Weird to chide him for ‘rentals’ and not paying full price when that’s exactly what you do yourself

Consumers should look out for themselves.

Yeah, I agree, but if this was all just about games like Ori then they could have just thrown up a blog post......like they did with Ori. Obviously there is a lot more to this and yeah, games like Starfield are on the table. Tom Warren said he knows one big game factually going to PlayStation.

That's exactly what I'm saying.

If you can't see how they feed in to each other then quite frankly you have your head in the sand.

Look at Palworld for example. I guarantee that's a game that would have caused a spike in subscribers and it's managed to sell very well on storefronts where gamepass isn't available.

They've had a quality and curation issue longer than you'd like to admit. They wish they could make games like those which are made by Sony and Nintendo to shove on to gamepass and grow their subscriptions. But they don't have the faintest clue how to do it, it's a process which continues to elude and befuddle them. Hence they've had to resort to purchasing anyone who will entertain the idea in recent years, but even that isn't fixing the problem.

So here we are, last chance saloon, last resort. Port the games to competing consoles and hope people pay full price for the games. They might be in for a rude awakening when it comes to the vast majority of their catalogue.

The problem was that the low periods kept getting lower and lower. There was no sign whatsoever of that improving. Nadella was likely tired of giving Phil Spencer a blank check for Xbox. Finally after purchasing ABK and seeing how much potential revenue would be squandered from putting those titles on Gamepass and Xbox as exclusives, Nadella said nope, this needs to make us money.

And lets say that "big game" turns out to be Flight Simulator which aligns exactly with Sea Of Thieves. Designed to milk money from players through microtransactions.

I took full advantage of the Gamepass conversions until 2025. I knew full well that it wasn't sustainable, but Ill take the goods if you're offering them.

A blog post wouldn’t have sufficed in this case since it’s clearly being expanded over the likes of Minecraft that has historically been a multiplatform franchise, or Ori that was ported only to Switch in the past.

Bringing games like Sea of Thieves and Pentiment from XGS studios like Rare and Obsidian raises way more eyebrows than their past ports.

More games will definitely be coming. We just don’t know the timing, specifics and their overarching strategy. Will they be day one launches, or timed exclusives?

Everything IS on the table.

Nothing change with ABK acquisition for PlayStation and Nintendo users.

Zenimax already have multi ips so they'll Get faster ports than MGS games.

Pandora's box has been opened.
Some people will continue to deny reality unless Microsoft officially goes the way of Sega (which clearly won't happen this week) but it's like frogs not realizing they're being boiled at this point.
Agreed. Any title will be expected to come to PS5 and I don't see how Xbox pulls in a significant number of new subscribers to Gamepass and or improves console sales. Xbox sales will likely be at all time low this January and February.

Makes sense to port live service games for MTX cash like SoT.... er... Hi Fi Rush and .... Pentiment...? Yeah, right. If single player games are coming already, they all will eventually.

But anyway, these are third party games which MS got through acquisitions. If the outfall of the failure of Xbox these days is that 3rd party titles return to the platforms they should have been on day one, then fine. Its a year or more late, but fine - this is where we should have been if the regulators had done their jobs effectively.

Keep the xbox pillar titles on .... whatever MS defines as exclusive these days.
