Very disappointed so far with the Xbox One S. What's going on here?

Also, if you go offline and everything is smooth, that's a clue it's not the OS.

An OS where UI response time can be severely impacted by network latency/bad network configs is a bad OS.

Also it's not like a lot of us have a choice. I live in a country that apparently isn't near any Microsoft servers (Xbox network test shows latency as about 200ms), so no matter what I do, certain parts of the OS will be sluggish. (And my latency to Google's DNS servers is 30ms, so it's not my home connection that's the problem)

You're right, I don't have IPv6. BT (by far the biggest ISP in the UK) won't have finished their rollout until early 2017 so it's not in my hands.

It might explain why that 4 isn't a 0 but it can't be the reason why the OS and especially the store lags for me.
It honestly was for me. It would take a couple seconds for even my friends list to load. My IPS IPv4 DNS is a hot mess.

I know. I'm just saying I'm in a similar boat. So many people in the thread were alluding to my incompetence and having it be a network issue. It should not be that hard or "finicky".

They don't have to walk the customer through the problem. They just need to have a better test or something. Give them more information.

Say "Hey, your router is blocking ports X, X, and X. You're going to have trouble accessing our services in regards to 1. Slow UI responsiveness, 2. X 3. X"

Idk

If it was that simple, everyone would do it and to my knowledge, no one does. Not anyone.

Grrrrr I can tell you a thing or two about XB1.

The FUNIMATION APP also constantly crashes!

I've done several factory resets, same thing. Not to mention they removed the best damn thing about it, moving menus with your HANDS!

Kinect is now utterly useless and ALSO randomly stops working.

So darn frustrating.

Pretty sure that's down to Funimation making a shitty app (or a combination of both?), their mobile app also gives me plenty of grief.

Xbox One is truly the American console if the OS doesn't work properly in countries without IPv6. It's been a while since I've used the Xbox one, but it never struck me as a quick os.

I just want to say I appreciate you wanting to help and respect your passion (this topic has been a little bad tempered at points and I don't want to contribute any more to that than I have already) but it can't be contingent on that. Nobody in the UK had IPv6 up until the beginning of 2016 and not everyone will well into 2017.

If the Xbox One OS is reliant on IPv6 for optimal performance otherwise it performs poorly then that's terrible OS design. I am not above tinkering with settings (my OG Xbox has a ton of modifications!) but this shouldn't be necessary for normal people especially given that the Xbox One will give status codes that have no explanation nor articles on the Xbox website. If we hadn't had matching status codes (what are the odds of that btw!) and you had tried something to get that 4 to a 0 I would have been none the wiser because a Google search turns up nothing.

I was also taken back by how clunky and awful the Xbox UI was. To me, everything feels so slow and burdensome. The dashboard feels so cluttered and confusing. Honestly reminds me how the PS3 XMB would often feel. The ps4 experience just feels so much smoother and better integrated all around. That's just my personal opinion of course.

In my detailed NAT info it says "your network is behind a cone NAT" and my status code is 0x0000040002000064

But my S is very snappy when I use it

Wow, so you have to get the console and also be an advanced network user/thoroughly look for network issues for the console to work properly? What?

For the million time, for those having issues go to
Settings
Network
Test multiplayer connection
When finished and given "A" prompt to exit, hold down both triggers and bumpers.

What is the status code?

^^^this is the most important information as the code can tell you exactly what the issue is. I can't seem to get people to do this.

Also, if you go offline and everything is smooth, that's a clue it's not the OS.

Actually thats a clear sign of shit OS design.
The usability of your UI shouldn't rely so heavily on random internet factors.

That's interesting. It does mean you have issues in networking somewhere, they just may not be affecting you. This is why I hate networking. Without knowing exactly what that code stands for, it's hard to say for sure. It's good to see these responses so maybe some can adjust if possible.

I do agree with some commenting that it shouldn't be this difficult to troubleshoot, but that's reality. If you do put in the time, it can significantly make a difference, if it's a local issue. In most cases I've delta with, it's usually a local issue.

Thank you, and I do agree.

Xbox live is IPv6 as well as Xbox one supports. It will perform better than IPv4. This could be one of the reasons we see such a discrepancy.

1Gb/s wouldn't matter. My buddy that lives in the country has Frontier DSL at a whopping 2Mb/s, yet doesn't have issues as bad as some here claim. There are more important things than DL speed. As a matter of fact, past 7Mb/s DL speed, it doesn't matter much for console games anyways. It's an online dash. If things like NAT, DNS, Ports, IPv6, ect. are not configured optimally, you will have issues. Location plays a part as well. As worldly diverse as GAF is, I wonder where most that have issues are from. I live in central USA and ping a constant 68ms to Redman, via the Xbox one Network Tests. Before I addressed the above possibilities, I had issues as well and used to ping 84ms. Now, it runs like a champ. Unfortunately, we are getting to a point in technology where the necessary knowledge to have a good experience is getting above the average consumer ability level to understand. All I hear is 'My download speed is...' and that has nothing to do with this.

I'm fairly technical and having the performance being based on anything you just said is a sign of bad OS design. I'm sorry and kudos for providing what info you have, but excusing the performance because anything you mentioned requires in-depth configuration is just a garbage excuse.

Lol.. this is what people are thinking now. Incredible.

Thinking that a console should provide consistently smooth OS without configuring network settings is incredible? Give me a break.

The responsiveness of a UI, especially a system UI, should not be dependant on the end users network setup.

This.

Pretty sure that's down to Funimation making a shitty app (or a combination of both?), their mobile app also gives me plenty of grief.

No issues on Mobile, PC, or PS4 for me.

Only on XB1. And it's not the APP itself, it's a Microsoft Error that randomly comes up saying that XBox can't access the app...while I'm watching it...

How's the 4K Blu-ray?

Here you go:

Fucking shit since it won't bitstream HD audio formats. Piece of shit.

Lets just say I'm fucking mad as hell about this since the only reason I bought this piece of trash was to play 4k films. Not only that but the RGB settings are FUCKED to all hell and the gamma curve completely destroys any dark scenes. I completely missed the goddamn intro sequence in ReCore where Joule is in the home base for the first time because the entire screen just went fucking black. Absolutely livid with this thing. For an "entertainment system" so far the games are aliased enough to cut my eyes on, the color is IMPOSSIBLE to correct for, movies don't support BASIC, nearly decade old audio formats, and the menu is a buggy, laggy, atrocious mess that's a goddamn unintuitive nightmare to navigate.

To say that I hate this system is an understatement. I hate this thing like AM hates humanity. There aren't words for it's offensiveness to common design sensibilities, or to industry standards. Every inch of me winces at this fucker's existence in my home theater cabinet. It's poison made plastic and silicon. It can royally go fuck itself.

How's the 4K Blu-ray?

Aside from the lack of Atmos (for the time being) and some stuttering while watching The Martian it seems to be a perfectly fine player. I don't notice any particular black crush issues some are talking about and the player is pretty smooth and responsive. I'm happy so far and once they get the patch for Atmos/DTSX I'll be extremely happy.

Sitting here watching football and decided to record how it does in the middle of doing this. Here you go. Nothing annoying here..at least...that I see. I mean, unless like less than half a second (1/4 second/1/8th/10th/..hahanot actually timing it) or faster bothers you. The "slowest" part of the video is the snap apps appearing, but it's literally a very short time, and snapping the football game was fast. If I used Kinect I could have even said "Xbox Snap TV" and it would have done it instantly, no need to do it from that menu, but even the menu wasn't bad to use and I wanted to try it with a controller for once. The snapped TV (football game) runs fine too. Everything switched, navigated, even looked at my games, apps, and the store/tab section. Seems fine to me? No?

Granted I didn't test everything, but just switched through what I might do on a regular interaction. I like to snap sports and play Horizon.

This is OG X1 too, my time with the S seemed quicker this weekend. Maybe I have a freak X1, lol.

(forgive me for holding the controller right next to the microphone..haha..and my daughter coughing at the beginning X-D)

Not saying people don't have problems, just showing my own interaction ;)

That is the same as my Xbox. Love how quick it switches between games and TV. So nice.

That code was from my wireless connection. When I plug it directly into the router only the first 4 remains. Still snappy so I'm happy. It seems charter modem isn't ipv6 ready as it's not sending any ipv6 into to my router. All those fields remain blank. /Shrug

Holy shit, I'm just imagining the kind of reviews you leave for other consoles lol, or on Amazon. Pretty sure bit stream was being fixed?

That's what I get too, but mine is not very snappy :(.

To those who have the xbox one running well - do you also have a game running in the background? That seems to be one of the causes for me. A freshly booted xbone runs fine and looks very close to videos of others showing better running systems. The moment I run a game (and it doesn't matter if I keep it running afterwards or if I end/close the game), things start to act like what's in my video again. How can that even be network related if things were working fine before running a game? Only fix so far is to do a fresh reboot again

The headphones got me, was playing one night after my wife went to bed , she came storming in giving me the WTF arm motion, took off my headphones and oh….the sound is coming through the TV.

Made sense after thinking about it since PS4 headset is plugged into the console via the dongle and the Xbox headset plugged into the controller. No way to mute the TV sound from controller.

FWIW, you can bind a chatpad button to TV mute

I guess you're lucky there's no porn allowed on consoles, eh :P

Ditto.

Are the people with slow ui's in USA or in another country? Just wondering

US here

IIRC plugging my headphones to my ps4 controller would automatically mute sounds from my TV. I think there was a setting though for that, where you can set it to route all sounds to your headphones but that setting kicks in automatically once you have something plugged to your controller's 3.5mm input

The X1 OS is a slow piece of shit in general, the only thing even slower is the shitty store app. And it keeps getting worse with every update.

I must have a lower tolerance for performance problems. I can literally _feel_ the latency every time you move between a top-level tab in the base OS.

There's definitely input delay too when switching between main dashboard tabs, enough for it to sometimes buffer an action for you when you're switching too fast by mashing on the shoulder buttons, and execute that a split second later. While it sounds like nitpicking, it's something I just happen to notice during normal interaction with the UI and it contributes to that "off" and/or "disconnected" feeling.

My Xbox is fine I must be one if the lucky ones.

The store is kinda slow but I understand it's in a transition phase so I'm not going to cry about that.

I had a issue with disks not reading yesterday but support helped me fix it.

I don't know what else to moan about

Thinking that a console should provide consistently smooth OS without configuring network settings is incredible? Give me a break.

I've never configured my network settings at all. This isn't Socom on PS2. Things work fine. Guess a minority of people equals all. Or which side do you choose? My side and the people who aren't having this problem? Or the people that are?

The OS is smooth and fine. You don't have to change network settings for the OS to work well.

What a mess.

Unless you plan on playing local 4K or HDR content, there's not a huge reason to upgrade to an S anyway if you already have an Xbox One. Wait for Scorpio.

Do you have a crystal ball? How do you know Scorpio won't have the same issues with 4K blu ray? Will the buggy and messy UI be fixed for Scorpio? Or will they keep like it is on Xb1? Will the RGB settings be fixed?

Yeah, recently I've been thinking about taking a XO S since there's some exclusives that I'd like to play, but so many things are a joke in this console... :/ And the "no headset sorry" is one of the worst to me. I've always LOVED the MS headsets that they included with the 360 and the XO, it was "cheap" but it was working just fine, confortable, no need to buy something better (again: to me), it was really cool having that included... When I heard there's no headset in the box, I was very very disapointed. I thought that "crappy headset" included in the PS4 packs was the worst thing to do, but no.
That's why I was shock.Microsoft always gave you a headset. Damn :(

Hmm, someone's on the offense. Dial it back a bit.

No one knows what the future is going to bring. But like I said, unless you have a specific need for local 4K/HDR playback now, there's really no need to jump on the S if your OG Xbox One is working fine for you. Scorpio has more potential as it will be a better equipped box.

Someone suggested earlier ITT to plug the XB1 directly into the wall and, believe it or not, it did help with some of the issues I had. Mine was previously plugged into a power board which was plugged into a surge protector adapter.

Since I plugged it directly into the wall, the PSU of my OG XB1 doesn't chirp like a freaking bird anymore (it was so bad, I thought it was defective and intended to exchange it sometime soon) and the OS overall feels quite a bit smoother, too. I've also had pretty frequent game crashes and while I haven't had the chance to play much yet, I wouldn't be surprised if these crashes were somehow related as well.

So, thanks to whoever suggested it.

Microsoft really did not pay attention to the above when designing the OS, but then their original vision was 'always online' and the system still has so much of that riddled through it's current OS.

I had a lot of problems with my XB1 network and OS speed a while back and in the end I just had to sort out my home network properly - my XB1 is now snappy as hell after properly redesigning and implementing my home network.

For anyone else interested, I got rid of the crappy old switch I had and rebuilt my network up around a Cisco SG200-08, all connected via Cat 6.

My Xbox is on a separate VLAN from various other things in my network - the combination of a really good solid, managed switch, good quality cabling and proper network management has made a huge difference.

My old network likely had lots of packet collisions and other issues. None of this really excuses the XB1 OS design, but it's a legacy from their whole original vision, and us punters just have to suck it up unfortunately.

Yup it seems like it for the most part, I will never understand how after such a good interface in the 360, they went to the One.
Even with the 360 they went from blades to NXE to the shitty tiles.

MS has issues balancing their corporate interests against usability these days.

Someone probably brought this up by page 14. Only read first few pages but....

Adding new devices to a network cam always change your nat settings. Check the settings - - network options on Xbox. Even if you nat is open your friends night have strict or moderate. Party chat issues are online with x360 and PS4 from my experience. Someone may just have to reset their router and modem.

The UI can be confusing to new users. Never use snap please. Stay in the guide. Double tap only.

No way the system is loud after using ps4. If it is exchange for new system.

We ended up returning them. The experience wasn't what we were expecting . Mostly, we weren't into Halo 5 as much as we were hoping.

My friend's having problems with his Xbox One S whilst downloading.

"terrible speeds when it's connected by the wire, cause when I have it wired the download speed barely hits 10 yet when I switched the wireless it's hitting about 40's/50's /:"

Anyone know what's causing it?

No, but I've encountered similar problems, ranging from 200 mbit/s to as low as 1, whether wired or not. It's immensely frustrating and completely unlike the consistent speeds I get downloading on PC.

While I'm at it, I've encountered numerous error messages when trying to launch games and the console hanging when I restart. UI is cluttered and unintuitive, and adding children to my account was a convoluted exercise in setting up separate email accounts. Why can't I simply link to my account?

Can't fault the UHD player though, which is the main reason I bought the console. That said, you need to adjust a few settings to unlock HDR and download the player. With UHD being such a selling point it's bizarre that it doesn't come pre-installed. Talking of which, I have the 500Gb version and had only about 370Gb to play with on starting. Machine comes with an incredible amount of bloat even before you start downloading Apps.
