VG Leaks: BC for NextBox to be an add on, can play offline

Sounds good. Those of us that don't want/need backwards compatibility aren't paying extra for Microsoft to include the required hardware in the Durango SKU.

If I can do this with my existing Xbox(s) without having to buy an Xbox mini it sounds like a decent solution and I'll just pack away the 360 when I'm done with it. Likely a a year or two into Durango's run.

So, to play 360 games on my Durango, I'd have to have a Kinect, Durango, and this new mini-360 hooked up at the same time.

What a clusterfuck. Three devices to play my 360 games.

This is of course assuming Kinect being connected is required for Durango and the user doesn't have a 360.

I really, really hope this is legit, because it swings my "PS4 or Durango?" dilemma back to Durango, and it's one less box under my entertainment center, but it raises more questions than it answers.

How will this network to the Durango? The wording is a little funky, so it could be through my home network, or through a USB port, it's not clear. The latter is more likely, though, but still, some clarification would be nice.

What will this look like? Will it be compact, like an Apple TV or Roku, so I can hide it? Stackable is fine, if it isn't bulky looking.

Will the Kinect 2: Kinect Harder work with legacy Kinect titles?

How will it store my XBLA and Games on Demand downloads? Will I need a bigger fridge for my Durango? (I hope the rumors of a 1TB hard drive add-on are true if this is the case.)

And most importantly, how much will this cost? If it's $60-70, give or take, it'll be a hit, but if it's $100, it'll flop harder than Louie Anderson on a high dive routine at the pool.

I guess the addon box would save an HDMI slot on the TV, so that's good. But if it also requires its own power supply (as I would assume it does) it somewhat negates the point if you already have a 360. If it's tiny that would be awesome and might make it worth picking up to save space. I like the option though if it means adding several years of effective life to 360 hardware in a sense, should your boxes die.

Impossible. Always online was the only problem people had.

Always online to play offline games was my biggest concern nice that durango doesn't need to be connected to play games.

Now for $500 they better thrown in some beefy specs into it.
That is my other concern specs. I mean ps4 is already dated as far im concerned durango is like a console that should have come out in 2011~2012 with the rumored specs.

But i let the reveal talk maybe they do know what they are doing.

This sounds totally acceptable to me, honestly. I hope the 360 mini is only $99, though. $149 feels too steep for ancient hardware.

I still think the Durango's always-online is a fatal mistake and will likely go with PS4 (if I get a console at all), but optional BC add-on component is really the best solution. Not everyone wants it, so why force everyone to pay for it? I'd rather a $500 console be $500 of new parts and not $400 of new parts along with $100 of old parts.

The PS4 will always be online. Neither require the internet though.

Just wondering how many if you feel right now? Am talking about those who jumped to conclusion and bashed Microsoft and the next Xbox? Complaining all the way about something that isn't confirmed nor revealed or released and acted like it was written on stone. Feel happy? Or do you choose what you wish to believe? Are you believing in this story just like you did with past ones? OR staying a little bit neutral so you won't lose faces?

Reminds me of the Famicom adapter that was planned for the Super Famicom:

That caption is wrong, btw. Someone assumed it was a normal Famicom but it was actually an add-on for the Super Famicom. The video would be output through the SFC.

Ultimately this thing was scrapped because... Why not just connect a Famicom?

+10 Durango sales worldwide from this "BC".

The idea of a smaller 360 locked to XBLA is a strange one too. Will be interesting to look at how it'll perform.

but what about XBLA and GOD? do you have to rebuy them if you opt to go with the BC add on? xbox live account should be cross gen right?

Ok. So does that mean the add-on doesn't have a disk drive? So if it is stand alone, it's only use will by XLBA, which is still a benefit, but not a total 360.

360 can stream the data for full retail games via USB port. Already has the ability.

It's a solution, I suppose. Not an elegant solution, but a solution nonetheless. I wonder how this applies for disc based games (It probably doesn't).

Thank god. Now we can go back to comparing the HW specs of both PS4 and Durango.

I wanna hear about software:0

I think it was Adam Orth's comments that really pissed everyone off.

I'm not sure if VGleaks was the one who put that out there, EDGE was if I remember right.

Yeah. Edge started it, one or two gaffer 'insiders' backed them up, more rumors then backed it up, and then Orths comments/MS silence "confirmed" it in peoples minds...mine included.

Personally, I think Edge needs to really be questioned if they were wrong on this. Reporting a rumor is one thing but when they stated running articles as though it was a fact, they lead many of us to believe that their source was pretty rock solid and that we were just waiting for MS to announce it.

Unless MS changed something in the past 2 months and removed the online requirement and no used games stuff.

He said they're critical, not the primary focus.

What else is he supposed to say? Of course every component is critical. I still think they're the primary focus in the transitional phase though, and MS wouldn't ever skimp in the games department.

Well he seems to say that a lot lately when taking about new IP.

It's not?

The report seems clear that it's a new 360, but without a disc drive. It will play digital games. It'll offer network services. It'll be spun as a set-top-box.

It will work without Durango.

However if you put it on the same local network as a Durango, you'll be able to 'remote play' it from Durango - play 360 software over the local network through the Durango interface. If you put a 360 disc in your Durango you'll be able to play that too - presumably it will shuffle data from the optical disc on Durango over the network to a reserve on the 360 hard drive and the 360 will play the software from there.

I think you'll be able to connect existing 360s to Durango in this manner also. The new revision is just the latest 360 revision, and it might be styled to sit next to a Durango better, but functionally will be the same in terms of interfacing with Durango.

Pretty much this. It's quite clear actually.

Sounds like we're basically back to square one again. Except instead of built in b/c support, it requires an add-on.

I'm really starting to think some people are just mad that Microsoft isn't dumb enough to hand most of their market over to PS4 and guarantee the single console future.
Kind of a silly thing to be mad about because competition ensures Sony is a better Sony, Microsoft is a better Microsoft and gamers have more choices.

Both companies enjoying success is the best possible scenario for gaming enthusiasts.

Or you can pay for PS+ and be running an internet connection to stream your PS3 games to your PS4. Pick your poison.

wait, why are people acting like this an option right now? My understanding is that this is "planned" at some point...and certainly not at launch.

The PS4 has BC in the same way Durango has BC (is this rumour is true): Keep your PS3 or buy one.

Where is this coming from? I'd love to hear more about it, but I've not heard this is the case. (I know there was a rumor about shrinking the cell down, but whether that means "add-on bc" I'm not so sure.)

Edit: Unless you just mean, "This isn't a BC solution, this is just a new 360" in which case, nevermind.

Lol at vg leaks trying to backtrack on the always online thing. "It's technically always online but everything else we said isn't correct."

Pretty sure EDGE were the first outlet to break that news. Sounds like they jumped the gun a little and were going off out of context information.

Just wondering how many if you feel right now?
Confused.

I still need to know where Xbox Live Gold fits into all this, and if/why I'd need a persistent online connection to play 360 games via this setup.

And I don't have cable, and don't want TV or ads. Do I even fit into this picture at all?

I'm alright with the optional BC, not everyone should pay for the feature if it's not important to them. Similar to the ideas floating around about a dongle for Sony.

The big news is the offline gameplay, I hope it's true (I think it is and have been saying so).

Yeah this is purely a business move, otherwise they would have just put this in the Durango or release it as a proper 360 revision with a disk drive in it.

You could keep your old 360 or purchase one that includes a disc drive. Including this in Durango would have increased its cost for a feature not everyone would use. This seems like a better solution to me.

I have a Super 8, it does this. Its great.

Don't see why it wouldn't be.
Vita can see and access PSP and PS1 games.
Windows Phone 8 can see and access Windows Phone 7 games.
No reason this will work any differently.

Well, with the article stating that the dev kits have to have everything plugged it because it would have to cover all possible hardware combinations, it now starts calling into question if the Kinect will be required to be plugged in with the Durango. I get why devs would have to have everything, they have to plan and see how their engine and systems handles all this connected at once, but now it's sounding like that just may be the dev unit.

it doesn't even need a harddrive(MiniXbox) just give it a 16gb flash memory & a SD slot. it can use Durango's harddrive when attached.
