Via Tom Henderson: We'll see "Launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC" a heck of a lot in 12-18 months

People get nearly every AAA game to run on a Steamdeck without the devs even trying hard. And the Switch 2 is most likely more performant than that. Devs will get games running on the Switch 2 if it's anything near the success of the Switch.

Isn't that mostly because we've been in cross gen land?

The S has a detrimental effect on both the X and PS5.

Devs will just ignore Nintendo if they so choose, as they always have done.

No irony or hypocrisy, just a nuanced situation.

That was easy enough to do when the Switch was so far behind.
A next gen switch should narrow the gap significantly, and if it sells well enough, it'd be a serious financial misstep to not target that platform.

If it has access to DLSS it doesnt need to be.

P.S It probably is.

Very very unlikely it's anywhere as powerful as a PS4 Pro, GPU wise. Even Apple's best ARM GPUs don't get there without being in configurations with a lot of GPU cores.

64 —> sunshine 7 years

Sunshine —-> Galaxy 5 years

Galaxy —-> Galaxy 2 3 years

Galaxy 2 —-> 3D World 4 years

3D World —-> Oddysey 5 years

If anything were overdue for one
Hmmm...
64 > Sunshine was 6 years (1996-2002).
Galaxy 2 > 3D World was 3 years (2010-2013).
3D World > Odyssey was 4 years (2013-2017).
I don't even have to check it out, but you guys Banjo64 Banjo64 can. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Hmm… i did that off the top of my head but the point still stands. We are due for a 3d Mario and they love doing them around launch.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that, but it's probably more of a holiday 2025 game. Metroid Prime 4 as a cross-gen launch title seems to be more fitting.

Has there ever really been a time where the majority of third party AAA devs were semi-reliably releasing on 4 platforms? I guess with Xbox, PS2, Gamecube gen and PC...sort of?

I'm not saying it can't happen but by the time Switch 2 gets the install base necessary the spec gap might have grown again.

I'm going to remain a bit more grounded in thinking games that really push the PS5/XSX aren't going to make it to switch 2. Hell, would be happy to be wrong because that should be the catalyst to the other handhelds seeing giant leaps as well. Having a beefed up, battery efficient Steam Deck 2 would be fantastic.

Been caught up in hype cycles for decades now not to be a bit a little jaded. If nothing else it'll either be a victory of success or a shit show of tears. Either one I'm down for.

I seriously doubt it's going to be more powerful than a ps4 pro
A few things Switch 2 has over PS4 and PS4 Pro is DLSS and Ray Tracing. Not even saying it's more powerful, but it will have a more advanced feature set than the old AMD architecture featured on One X and Pro. Not even expecting Ray Tracing to be used much, but it's still going to be interesting to see what the little Switch 2 can pump out.

As someone who is a late purchaser of the Switch the one thing I beg of Nintendo is that they don't fuck up in terms of BC.

Unless they're suicidal, I highly doubt Nintendo will strip BC from the Switch 2.

Most likely, when docked the Switch 2 will provide fidelity on par with a Series S. DLSS 3.2 + lower internal rendering resolution requirement (as a result of DLSS) means lower raw RAM bandwidth, internal storage speed, and RAM capacity needed to re-create fidelity on par with a Series S.

Performance-wise I think the Switch 2 is going to surprise people, in a good way. Nintendo's not 100% adverse to performance and the Series S isn't exactly at the performance level a typical 9th-gen system would be assumed at.

Next year will be 7 years since Mario Odyssey. That is their usual cadence for the big 3D Mario games.
Mario 64 - '96
Mario Sunshine - '02
Mario Galaxy - '07
Mario Galaxy 2 - '10
Mario 3D World - '13
Mario Odyssey - '17

As you can see, 7 years has never happened before. This is the longest we've ever gone without one.

Thing is I expect the worse possible scenario for the hardware which is a 8nm chip which will make it a ps4 with dlss.

Regrettably missed the whole switch mania the first time round. As long as they have full backwards compatibility with the first switch, it's a day one purchase for me. I won't even complain if the luanch line is lacking because I'll have a whole lot of Mario and Zelda and xe of ears to catch up on!

You Nintendo fans got spoiled this gen. And as an Xbox owner I was legit jealous for all of two seconds befor deciding I may aswell just join the club. It's just a matter of when is switch 2 coming out. I'm in. Day one. I'll be playing all those switch games in for the first time with hardware accelerated enhancements hopefully.

Gonna be gamecube gen all over again for nintendo. They better have a differentiator. Not to mention the PS brand is stronger than in the PS2 era and so is XB.

It's better to look at the release with respect to the launch of the system. They usually put one out launch year or next year. I wouldn't doubt that the next 3D Mario is ready for Switch 2's first holiday.

It will easy. It has nvidia and dlss. I bet will be similar in perf like a series s

I'm sure Nintendo will deliver absolute state of the art technology at 399$ and will embarrass Apple and their "state of the art technology" that costs 1500$!!

Real question is if we still see after those initial 18 months. Nintendo consoles are heavily front loaded.

I just find it funny how Switch 2 holding graphics back seems to bother nobody as they cheer this news, but anyone mention Series S and everyone swarms up. And I'm one of those who thinks Series S is a disease, but surely peeps have to keep the same energy for Switch 2 that will likely be even less powerful. The irony and hypocrisy is not lost on GAF.

Xbox launch was like the following analogy.

We company X, release the best blu-ray player. It eats monsters for breakfast. Our competition is 30% worse muhahaha. But for the next couple of years we'll only sell you DVD content from our previous player because we don't have any blu-ray content. Zero, nix, nada. Live with it.

On topic, can't wait what Nintendo will present as their next gen console. Everyone expects it to be a direct follow up of the original switch, but maybe we'll be surprised 😁. And if it's a direct follow up it must be significantly more performant.

Naw look at the switch not even one third party game sold over 5 million lol. Pc/ps5 is where the third-party games sales are.
Monster Hunter Rise.
Minecraft.
Mario + Rabbids.

The reality is that outside of late ports, what landed on Switch that should've done gangbusters yet didn't?

The reality is that most titles don't outdo 5 million on any console, outside of the quad-core stack of Madden, 2K, Fifa, COD and GTA.

people tend to have smoke for Switch 3P sales yet no smoke for the lack of 3P hyped titles.

Disingenuous tactics

LOL you name 3 games, and one has mario ip tied to it so it doesn't even count. So basically mine-craft and monster hunter which is long established being on nintendo systems. Being late ports hasn't really stopped nintendo games from selling gang busters on switch. The problem with nintendo it been generations of weak thirdparty support and those third party franchises are establish on Playstation/pc. elden sold 10 million on playstation consoles and sekiro over 5 million. point is 3rd party will develope for switch but it's not gonna be a priority since switch hasn't proved itself as a thirdparty selling machine like playstation or PC.

I don't give a **** about the silly graphics.

The only thing I care about is if the thing feels acceptable to hold in your hands and if there's any interesting Live Service games being made for it.

We'll have to see how PS5 momentum holds up post-2023. Gonna come down to what AAA and AA traditional titles Sony's 1P (and 3P through co-development deals) have cooking up, and of course what 3P exclusives they land, how significant they are, and if their PC strategy accelerates ports of traditional 1P titles or not (IMO it shouldn't). Any combination of those where there's more good than bad could slow momentum down heavily.

Meanwhile, Xbox has been tracking at OG Xbox sales levels more or less the entire year globally, and Starfield wasn't enough to really change that. Maybe finalizing ABK will? Their big games on PC aren't doing that well outside of I'd say Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, Age of Empires and Elder Scrolls Online (two of those only being theirs through acquisitions). Right now I'd say the brand is somewhere between OG Xbox and XBO in terms of overall health (financially, optically, mindshare, software quality).

Although I'd say XBO was better mindshare-wise, and OG Xbox in terms of 1P & 3P exclusives software quality (and especially mindshare-wise with select games, such as Halo and Halo 2). ATM even a tepid Switch 2 should manage to easily outpace Xbox Series at the current rate; real question is if they can be competitive with or outpace the PS5, and that would be Sony's game to lose.

This is me. I've only held off on getting a Switch in hopes Switch 2 is BC. I'm there day 1 if it is. Probably there day one anyways as long as Nintendo doesn't Wii U the Switch successor.
