Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

So Raccoon Mario was supposed to be in Super Mario World, woah! Never knew this.

What about the second one, what I'm I supposed to see there? I see Diskun but nothing else I know about. Looks like a vending machine.
I think the machine was like a rental thing if I remember. You get a blank cart, take it to this machine, pay a fee and it puts the game on the cart. I could be totally wrong.

I think some of the stuff on this site that Kurt linked to has shown up here, but even for stuff that doesn't necessarily qualify as "blowing your mind," there's a bunch of interesting stuff here. Good find!

Those machines let you copy new games onto blank disks/disk sides for a small fee (~500 yen per side), and there were even a bunch of games that were distributed exclusively via Disk Writer kiosks and were unobtainable any other way. Nintendo was still supporting those things well into the 2000's, even via mail order.

There was a similar service for Super Famicom/Game Boy Color: it was called Nintendo Power and used rewritable flash cartridges instead of disks, but the basic idea was the same--you'd take your cart to a kiosk and they'd throw some games on there for a small fee. They could hold a little less than 4MB, off the top of my head, so you could have a few games on there at once. Again, it got lots of retail games and a few exclusive games that weren't released at retail, including big stuff like SMB DX for GBC.

There is something so typical Japanese, yet so awesome over that vending machine. They love vending machines there, and I bet they looked almost the same 20 years later in service because they take such good care of public property.

Neat, never knew about this stuff! Thanks for sharing.

What is the shocking secret for SMB on page 70? I am not seeing it, or I have different paging setup. Post number would be more helpful. Thanks.

The clouds and bushes in Super Mario Bros share the same sprite, just with different colour palettes.

The metalmurphy.post on that page bout jade just shows whats wrong with this industry. "she's getting attention and she isnt pretty" not a cool thing to say

I know they are banned n that post was ages ago but it shows in that aspect nothing has changed towards women in game industry in 6 years

I just figured this reference out yesterday... (cross-posting from Wind Waker thread).

Anyone else pick up on this while playing Wind Waker?

That they are both old men with beards?

I don't think there's any reference, unless he says the exact same line - which I don't think he does.

Because it is, really. Sahasrahla from LTTP has more in common with Zelda 1 old man:

The guy from wind waker is not the guy from Zelda 1, and saying it's a reference to him is a stretch.

Huh? The guy's hair and mustache looks much more like Orca than Sahasrahla.

All I'm saying is that the guy who gives you the sword in the 10th Zelda game resembles the guy who gives you the sword in the 1st Zelda game. Him looking similar or not to Sahasrahla doesn't factor into this observation one way or the other.

He barely resembles the guy from the first game. The thread is videogame facts that blow your mind, not partial concidences or similarities.

Anyway, I'm shitting up the thread. I apologize.

Considering how often the Zelda series does things like this I wouldn't be surprised if Orca was inspired somewhat by how the Old Man looks. Especially since he give Link his sword. They even attempted to make his eyes look black. Same with Sahasrahla, the Zelda series is always trying to make connections between the games even if the timeline doesn't match.

Wasn't WW originally planned to be a remake of Zelda 1 in its early stages as well? I can't find any info on it but I thought I heard that once.

Oracle of Seasons was originally planned as a remake which is why it has certain similarities to Zelda one like the bosses and the location of dungeon one.

The beard is less large, the eyebrows are totally different and, although you can't see the length of the Zelda 1 guy's hair, it would have been much more logical to make the other guy short-haired if they wanted to remind us of him. And let's not forget the obvious fact that one wears a red robe and the other is half-naked with purple pants. I'm pretty sure it's just two old guys.

Wait... he's not bald with a weird head shape? You mean, that's a hat? O_O

the title tricked me.. i fell for click bait. :( its like a mummy magazine. "BEYONCE'S SHOCKING DIET SECRETS, PAGE 70!!"

LOL

Post 70, not page 70. It's not as shocking as it was a few years ago though.

Speaking of Wind Waker, there are two things that I just noticed much later.

The two who are aiding Link through the quest and which can be controlled are called Medli and Makar. Medli Makar = Medley Maker, as the main theme of Wind Waker (the one you hear at the start screen) is a medley of the two songs Medli and Makar play.

This one might be a bit of a stretch, bit I like it: Remember that disco guy?
maxresdefault6wuyq.jpg

He spends all day and night dancing in front of a gravestone, which makes sense as he tries to get the song to work that turns day into night.
But I love that visual pun -
Disco is dead, after all
.

Also, I always love people getting amazed on the DKC2 pun.

It's a play on words. Diddy's Conquest.

File this one under "things I realized instantly when I was 10 years old that you should honestly be embarrassed that you didn't realize until adulthood".

Same as cloudbush too, to be honest ;)

Randomly watched the Pieuvre Armement clip from MGS4 to link it to someone and thought that the lady in the beginning had an expression that looked a lot like RE6 Ada Wong.

Turns out she actually is Ada Wong's new face!

The woman in the bottom left picture is not the same person, she's the actor who plays Jill Valentine in the Resident Evil movies. (Or at least she looks more like her than the actress/Ada in the top pic).
