Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

Spelled out what clearly? There's missing information around the UI, eShop, VC, online service, etc. that was never shown on video form. There's clearly ambiguity surrounding all those stuff.

And Reggie has always been a clown.

I'm talking about the voice chat features. I'm the context of that discussion, You said "if the Switch is a smart device with app support, that solves the whole weird thing about why they would make it mandatory to have another device to chat". Based on what we do know, what Nintendo has made fairly clear, that makes no sense.

Okay, I mean we're just disagreeing on what's possible here so that's fine.

I do think that it makes no sense for Nintendo to not put their own mobile games on Switch though unless they all turn out to be very simplified experiences. The unveiling of Fire Emblem mobile tomorrow will be interesting.

Business wise if they start putting big name F2P stuff on Switch they might feel like they could cannibalize into sales of their own traditional games. I don't think putting mobile stuff on Switch is a no brainer for Nintendo at all. It's very possible they view these as two different business endeavors.

Like I asked earlier, what if you are like me where my wife and I share a phone since I don't need a smart phone and she does? I won't be able to chat with friends in MP games when she is gone and then when she is here what if someone calls for her while I am playing or she just needs to use it like she does all the time?
Sorry to break it for you, but it looks like you need a smart phone after all. Heck, even my 8 year old nephew has a smart phone. (Not a fan of this, he is too young, but you really are an exception here, especially in 2017)
And, while I'm not fond of Nintendo's decision on this, I don't run around and tell people to have a mental breakdown if they are OK with the way Nintendo is going.

Also, we don't even know what it will look like in the end. People need to calm down and wait for a direct about those topics before going ape shit.

Probably the single most bizarre thing I've ever heard in gaming

Its 2017, pretty much every connected device that exists allows you to use voice chat. But not this one where interaction between users is an expected feature.

I'm amazed. Not in a good way.

So the Switch doesn't have a mic-in?

So they can't even fix this horrible issue even if they wake up one day with their head out of their ass?

Sorry to ask again if it has been answered already, but what is their solution to game sound when using the smartphone app and headphones?

If there's voice chat (and there better godamn be if they're charging for online!), it's pretty grating if you're forced to either listen to the chat or the game when using headphones.

The Switch does have a mic. It's indicated on the Japanese website pictures of the unit. It als has a headphone socket.

I present to you... *drumroll*... The all new, Singing and Dancing*, Nintendo Mental Gymnastics Team! :P

http://nintendoeverything.com/reggie-talks-switch-online-service-info-teased-on-rebuying-classic-games-supply-concerns-3ds-here-to-stay/

Edit: The app comes with your online paid subscription.

Nintendo has not clarified if there is also voice chat on the Switch itself.

Clarification and new information that was just found out so I believe it deserves a new thread.

http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

So Paid online, on a Scroogle device that will sell my data to third parties and I don't even get native voice chat?

Yeah erm...... enlighten me again why I should get this thing as a Nintendo fan? Seriously? How greedy can a company get. Oh I forgot you have to pay for 1 month demos of ancient games, it is part of the "paid online" while Sony has a service that will allow you to play whatever you like whenever you like via a streaming service :D.

Not a Sony Fan, but COME ON!

I personally think the console won't be able to handle running the game, gameplay capture features, AND party chat/comms simultaneously.

It's only got 4GB of RAM after all.

You can't offload the capture features to a mobile device for obvious reasons, but you can for chat/voice as we've seen with Skype, discord, PS messages etc.

I think the social app was a necessary evil in order to retain as much of the console's resources towards doing what it's intended to.. play games.

Poor Vita and Xbox 360.They did things they had no idea they can't do.

Skip video capture for social features then. People can use capture hardware if they really want to record video.

Voice chat isn't going to take up a ton of RAM or processing power on the system. Based on rumors 800 MB of the Switch's RAM is reserved for the OS (not sure about the CPUs though, I imagine they would want to throttle down the system CPUs and use as little system RAM as possible while in portable mode though to help with the battery life).

Why is everyone ignoring the part where I specifically state GAMEPLAY CAPTURE lol...

It's not clear that the Switch won't have the same features bulit-in, nor is clear that it will be a paid app just because "free" is mentioned. Stop spreading bullshit, Jesus people.

Clearly Nintendo are doing such a great job at selling their console, with confusion rife about basic features!

Remind me how Vita and 360's capture features worked again?

The point being that party chat is using a really small amount of RAM and if the RAM is an issue, outsourcing party chat won't do too much for that issue. Maybe if RAM is really not enough for video capture then they should have put in more RAM. Or drop the video capture all together.

Why are you ignoring the fact that the 17 year old PS2 handled voice chat on some games with a grand total of 32MB of RAM ?
And am I supposed to be impressed with a feature that isn't even implemented yet ?

This is wrong by the way (Vita, X360 have it) but let's assume is right, why paid? Why paying for a standard feature on top of your online subscription?

And I'm sure at 32mb the voice audio quality of a 17 year old PS2 rivals today's consoles too right?

If I have to use my phone to talk to my friends I might as well just give them a call.

Also, why is Oresama doing so much damage control?

No one knows anything right now, all we know is some minced words from Reggie, who is just some PR guy for NOA which amounts to not much more than a translation and box printing branch of Nintendo. They have nothing to do with the software development. He can't can't even say his bosses' names correctly yet everyone is up in arms because he said you are able to do something in an app, and that headsets are bulky.

Lets wait for more details...

No lie; i was miffed when Sony announced that we had to pay for their online with the PS4, which ultimately felt like a damn con too since it amounts to little benefit in the grand scheme of things. Like a buffoon, i still paid for it after being disgusted that Microsoft got people to pay with the 360. At least we rationalized that the ps plus games softened the blow.

To have Nintendo pull this thing though. Wow. They have some brass. A paid mobile service that is your only option for a buddy list chat? Really? I want them to succeed despite not being very interested in their main game lineups outside of smash/MH and fire emblem, but they just keep hamstringing themselves.

Thank god so they can patch this shit in.

I don't think it has a built-in microphone, but the headphone jack is specifically described as "headphone microphone". So at least you're set on the go. Which would also somehow disprove most of the hate the device is getting here.

I don't know about docked mode, though. No controller has a microphone jack, so that's where a bluetooth device would come in or the Online App. In the end, it's up to Nintendo to clear things up and to communicate their solution.

Sorry to ask but have it been made clear how you'll manage game sound and then the voice chat on a separate app? I don't see how Reggie's bullshit answer even complies with on the go game play functionality and the voice chat.
Again sorry to jump in and ask but not digging through 1600 responses.

Nintendo hasn't said anything so no we don't. My guess is we'll have to wait until they do an "Online Features" Direct or something like that to know more. And that could be any time from now until fall.

Can't wait to hear the tv's of my friends while playing.

So despite Reggie's apparent dislike for "bulky gamer headsets" there is a bulky gamer headset available specifically for the Switch. This leads me to think you can possibly use this straight through the console? I know that contradicts what Nintendo is saying, but it doesn't seem like this headset is meant to be hooked into your smartphone..

I imagine you use it as headphones for gameplay, and plug it into your phone for voice chat. The bulky headset comment was so dumb, especially when you consider that the headset packed in with the market leading PS4, the headset likely a majority use for game chatting, is no bigger than a set of ear buds, but Reggie was just trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit so it's hard to blame him.

It was just as dumb as his "watching other people play video games is boring" comment.

Guys I think Switch will support wired and Wireless headphones

They just have no intention of building OS level party chat at this time

However they could add OS functions in the future so maybe if we request it strongly enough?

Also it remains to be seen if Third Parties can allow Voice Chat in game on their end

Either way the situation is still looking pretty shitty across the board until they tell us something different

i'm confused with nintendo's messaging. i know you will be able to voice chat with a smartphone app. but will you be able to voicechat without a smartphone? like just through the console?
