No jack on the Pro controller, which is nutsThe naysayers in this thread are ridiculous. This is clearly just an app like the PS Messaging app which can be used in addition to the on-device apps. It makes no sense why this would be it's own separate thing, which would just require extra effort for an actively bad decision. The switch is literally a multi-touch tablet not even Nintendo is dense enough to not be able to figure out messaging on the device.
I'm also sure that both the pro controllers and switch device themselves will have a headphone jack just like the Wii u gamepad did.
Tying the audio chat service to the paid online portion does seem kind of silly, considering both PS and Xbox support party chat on their free tier, but given Nintendo's history of aversion to voice chat (i.e. in basically nothing except Pokemon) it's better than nothing.

I couldn't find one on the Switch, Joy-con, or Pro controller. Is there a mic on switch or joycon?
Cool so in the middle of a match, someone calls you, you're fucked
The year is 2017.
No jack on the Pro controller, which is nuts

There is one on the Switch itself though
This is the most hilarious part of Switch so far.
The Switch does seem to have a headphone jack with mic input at least. Haven't seen any on the Joycons, grips, or pro controller though.I couldn't find one on the Switch, Joy-con, or Pro controller.
I dunno I'm still trying to decide between this, the one month rental for 2-3 decade old games, the paid online without third party support, or the ridiculous pricing for games like Street Fighter 2.
That's the confirmation I was holding out for. So the only distant possibility left is bluetooth headsets, but that's probably such a long shot that I feel like it's time to pack it up and go home. Nintendo have lost their minds. Even the Wii U had voice chat by plugging into the GamePad, although most games never utilized the feature.
I play with a Sennheiser headset so I can hear the game and my allies coming out of the same speakers strapped to my head. Now I have to buy a Y-cable for like $30 from Sennheiser to split my mic off of the headset to my PC to use discord and my headphones have to run to the docked Switch tablet. This is gonna be messy.
No it's called Discord. Skype stinks.
I can see why Nintendo are not including the communication features within the hardware. They don't want children being exposed to vulgar language and content
The Switch seems insanely half-baked. It's basically being rushed out with Zelda as soon as possible. Everything else is in the dust and doesn't look finished for launch.
But I'm 30...
But I'm 30...
At least they set the tone for the whole presentation early when they dropped this news...
After playing with all their cards so close to the vest, they basically drop major(ly disappointing) news like this in passing without any real explanation for everyone to shit on without any media released to even try and quiet people's fears.
What was the point of making us wait so long to hear about this?
Maybe the real reason it took them so long to reveal the thing is because they have no idea what direction to take it in themselves. This thing is even more poorly thought out than the damn 3DS, and that was definitely a disaster at launch. Nintendo probably won't have the same leeway in terms of price this time with so many included components.
Edit: The app comes with your online paid subscription.
Nintendo has not clarified if there is also voice chat on the Switch itself.
Clarification and new information that was just found out so I believe it deserves a new thread.
http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/
I'm gonna guess that this "lobby" system or w/e is also called an app on the Switch itself, and that's lending to a lot of confusion
if their online service is seriously relegated to a completely separate device than l m a o that is the stupidest thing they've ever done
This is actually very forward thinking. My friends are in Discord. I don't like to listen to randoms. I already use Discord when I game online.
It makes no sense why this would be it's own separate thing, which would just require extra effort for an actively bad decision.
I couldn't find one on the Switch, Joy-con, or Pro controller.
But your example is why this isn't forward thinking. There are already a multitude of solutions of this type that are completely free. It's not forward thinking, it's completely ass backwards.
HahahahahaOne of the major benefits of losing your legs in a car accident is that you no longer have to folk out money on shoes.
I mean, come on man, you're reaching here.
Unbelievable.
I mean Monster Hunter Switch will probably have in-game voice-chat like the Wii U version because Capcom aren't that dumb, but... man, essentially saying "oh you want voice chat, use our app, or Discord, or whatever" is so fucking backwards. People who play games with headphones are gonna be fucked.
Somehow their online component got...worse?
How is this possible?
