Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

I blame you, neogaf. You cried for Nintendo to go mobile for years. (It won't be that bad. I use skype on my iPhone every time I play Monster Hunter and it's fine).

It's like Nintendo try to do everything different even if it's detrimental

Why can't Nintendo just get on board with some features that should be standard?

The naysayers in this thread are ridiculous. This is clearly just an app like the PS Messaging app which can be used in addition to the on-device apps. It makes no sense why this would be it's own separate thing, which would just require extra effort for an actively bad decision. The switch is literally a multi-touch tablet not even Nintendo is dense enough to not be able to figure out messaging on the device.

I'm also sure that both the pro controllers and switch device themselves will have a headphone jack just like the Wii u gamepad did.

Tying the audio chat service to the paid online portion does seem kind of silly, considering both PS and Xbox support party chat on their free tier, but given Nintendo's history of aversion to voice chat (i.e. in basically nothing except Pokemon) it's better than nothing.
No jack on the Pro controller, which is nuts

There is one on the Switch itself though

Web browser is probably just gonna be Nintendo telling me to have my laptop near me.

Seriously why don't we have more details on this yet ? It seems completely insane to me that there would be no integrated chat features, even for Nintendo. Then again there doesn't seem to be any headphone jack on either the grips or pro controllers, so even if it did it'd be only in handheld mode ? Seems lame too.

The Switch seems insanely half-baked. It's basically being rushed out with Zelda as soon as possible. Everything else is in the dust and doesn't look finished for launch.

I hope you're right, but when we're talking about Nintendo and online, all bets are off. Still, the idea of it being relegated solely to the app is SO bonkers a scenario that I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until we get clarification.

That's the confirmation I was holding out for. So the only distant possibility left is bluetooth headsets, but that's probably such a long shot that I feel like it's time to pack it up and go home. Nintendo have lost their minds. Even the Wii U had voice chat by plugging into the GamePad, although most games never utilized the feature.

I play with a Sennheiser headset so I can hear the game and my allies coming out of the same speakers strapped to my head. Now I have to buy a Y-cable for like $30 from Sennheiser to split my mic off of the headset to my PC to use discord and my headphones have to run to the docked Switch tablet. This is gonna be messy.

I dunno I'm still trying to decide between this, the one month rental for 2-3 decade old games, the paid online without third party support, or the ridiculous pricing for games like Street Fighter 2.

Lmao.. It didn't really hit me until just now, but damn that is funny,

Nintendo almost seemed to have it together when they announced Switch. Good to see they're back on form with this.

I mean, seriously, what. Nothing quite immerses me like having to negate game audio to have voice chat. What backwards ass "solution" this is.

Has anyone confirmed the location of a bluetooth sync button on the switch? A console or handheld should have one these days.

Maybe a headset works via the USB-C on the pro controller lol.
I wouldn't hold my breath for this

this really bums me out

we have to pay for an online service where we cant talk to our friends while we play

unless we use our damn phones

wtf

why is it even paid online. no jack on the pro controller and grip is also an oversight

lmao @ them marketing this as a console first

At least they set the tone for the whole presentation early when they dropped this news...

After playing with all their cards so close to the vest, they basically drop major(ly disappointing) news like this in passing without any real explanation for everyone to shit on without any media released to even try and quiet people's fears.

What was the point of making us wait so long to hear about this?

Maybe the real reason it took them so long to reveal the thing is because they have no idea what direction to take it in themselves. This thing is even more poorly thought out than the damn 3DS, and that was definitely a disaster at launch. Nintendo probably won't have the same leeway in terms of price this time with so many included components.

This is actually very forward thinking. My friends are in Discord. I don't like to listen to randoms. I already use Discord when I game online.

It's like they didn't have finalized hardware until an hour before the event last night so there was no nicely worded documentation to provide to the public. Manufacturing just got started while the event was running so they'll have a few thousand units available for March 3rd.

I'm gonna guess that this "lobby" system or w/e is also called an app on the Switch itself, and that's lending to a lot of confusion

if their online service is seriously relegated to a completely separate device than l m a o that is the stupidest thing they've ever done

If that were the case they wouldn't mention "smart device" every time they talk about this app. It's fairly clear what is going on here to everyone who is not in denial. They are offloading the task friend/part/chat management onto people's cell phones. If the Switch could do this natively, there would be no reason for this app to exist, let alone be so prominently featured.

But your example is why this isn't forward thinking. There are already a multitude of solutions of this type that are completely free. It's not forward thinking, it's completely ass backwards.

I don't think you're paying for voice chat, you're paying for playing online. Voice chat is just offloaded to your phone for battery and ressources concerns, which I expect is the main reason why this is done that way.

If you have just a button to push and the thing is automatic that's probably fine.

Paying for online is bullshit either way. Especially on nintendo devices, doesn't matter how good or bad the service will be.

Unbelievable.

I mean Monster Hunter Switch will probably have in-game voice-chat like the Wii U version because Capcom aren't that dumb, but... man, essentially saying "oh you want voice chat, use our app, or Discord, or whatever" is so fucking backwards. People who play games with headphones are gonna be fucked.

One of the major benefits of losing your legs in a car accident is that you no longer have to folk out money on shoes.

I mean, come on man, you're reaching here.
Hahahahaha

Defense force for everything, really.

I don't think there will be any in-game voice chat in any game becasue the switch doesn't have a mic and there is no mic accessory meaning all voice chat has to be done via a phone or something.

Nintendo continues to be weird about voice chat. Shocking. Meanwhile, kids everywhere are chatting and playing Minecraft online together over Xbox Live, but nope, can't do that on a Nintendo system. That would be dangerous.

Somehow their online component got...worse?

How is this possible?

[.........]

well ... Let's just hope that the console has the 3 port jack that allow headphones+mics to work with the system.
because i don't see anything online related to work these days without a proper chat support in some form that doesn't require additionnal hardware to work.

If voice c hat works on xbox , Playstation and PC , it should work on the switch too

I'm not trying to be funny but is anyone really that surprised by any of this?

How long has this thing been in development?

I'll just call my brother on my phone and put him on speaker, no extra app needed... or continue to use my PS4 voice chat while playing Nintendo games. What were they thinking?
