Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

If you can't chat natively on the Switch then I don't even. It seems absolutely insane.

It's almost like a test. If you think this approach is acceptable or a good idea then you're a Nintendo fanboy.

oh Nintendo, you really can't help yourselves can you?

Yes, but what I mean is that they should work on decoupling the voice chat experience away from the console. I don't want to buy a console headset. I would rather use the bluetooth headset I already got for my phone.

There is a multitude of advantages to offering voice through your smart device. Watch Microsoft and Sony follow eventually.
9/10. Deducted a point because it actually sounds like you believe yourself.

So it's not even just for external matchmaking, it's also for audio? Unless their noise cancellation is great it's gonna be really cumbersome. If you want to use headphones it's gonna be awkward (one ear Switch, one ear phone?)

Microsoft: Man, we had a rough launch for Xbox One. Always online, high priced, tvtvtvtvtv...I think we're gonna hold the record for "worst console launch" for a loooong time.

Nintendo: Hold my beer.

My main question is, why aren't more outlets jumping on this? Is it something we're not getting or are they turning a blind eye?

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/switch/specs/index.html#1

If you read the Japanese there (linked because the image is huge), where it points to the audio jack it says "headphone, mic, or headset with mic can be used here." (grey text). It uses the word "shihan," at first, something like, "commercial," likely meaning that any headset could be used through that port.

So there's definitely the capacity for audio input through that port. The English translation just leaves all that subtext out for some reason.

Considering how they use team communication in Splatoon this isn't very surprising.

None of this even approaches the damage Microsoft did with their always online stuff.

What would be the point if that if every Switch could do it natively? Can at least one person who is in complete denial of this feature please explain that to me? Why would they go to the trouble of developing a phone app that does something the Switch could already do?

Maybe so you can chat to your friends who are in a game and you're away from Switch. I don't know.

Edit - guess not.

Want if kids don't have a phone but want to talk to their friends in games?

Did you know there are already thousands of people using services such as Discord to voice chat with online friends insteaf of using the XBL/PSN chat service? Even some Xbox devs use Discord.

People are already using their phone through Discord or other external applications to chat while in game. The advantages are obvious. You get to take your conversations outside of the game always, even when your console is off. This is already happening. Nintendo realized it and moved in that direction. It is smart.

I cant believe people in GAF are so disconnected. I don't even game that much and I know this is a trend now.

I can take my voice chat experience outside of the game. I don't need to turn on my games to chat with my game friends.

Imagine an always online lobby room for Mario Kart in which players gather and coordinate games for the evening. You can access it at any time from your phone app.

Right now that goes on with Discord. People coordinate their games on the Discord lobby during the morning while they are away from their consoles/PC and schedule times to game during the evening. They don't use Xbox/PS4 to chat at any moment, they chat in Discord during the game session. In fact, the big disconnect is that Discord doesn't have direct integration with PSN/XBL so to set up a game they have to share user ids, and go through all that game setup shit.

Imagine if the smart device app is actually aware of Nintendo's game network and allows you to set up the game and invite your friends from the phone app. Its the direction in which I know XBL is moving towards with Smartglass allowing you to message friends from the app. The problem is that SmartGlass is laggy as fuck. I'd rather use Discord for messaging and voice all the way and just deal with the XBL/PSN friend system to set up the game. I hope Nintendo can pull it off.

Is there a reason why that has to be totally decoupled from the console? Can't they work in concert, the same way I can communicate with my friends on PS4 through my Vita? Like I get the value in having it in ADDITION, but not exclusively.

Good point. Without Nintendo's online service, how else would I use my MOBILE PHONE to chat with friends when I"m away from my Switch.

lol

Not necessarily. I simply don't play online so it doesn't matter to me. But I still agree it appears a clumsy decision and a bad one for those who do.

A console tethering to your mobile for online when out of home is reasonable, depending on data plans. But when you're able to use WiFi a built in speaker or Bluetooth headset should be an option.

Didn't you hear? That's a bulky gamer headset. The weight and strain it puts on your head and ears is damaging to your health.

lol

I don't want to pair my Bluetooth headset with my console and then pair it with my phone again once I am done with the console. I'd rather just keep my phone on. Plus, I can carry my phone with me and not being bound by the Bluetooth range of the console.

For example, I have turned notifications on my Xbox off. I get them all through my phone on Smartglass. This is the direction Microsoft is moving, and Nintendo is a step ahead here.

Comparable, and we still have more info to gain from Nintendo (price of online service, price of voice chat app, power of the hardware, etc.).

It's a fucking shitshow.

Even if this is the way the world is going (which is debatable), Nintendo should give people the fucking option. What if I don't want to use my phone while I game? What if I'm in a match and my phone rings?

It's just stupid bullshit that Nintendo is dropping on their fans because they know their fans will take the abuse and keep shelling out money.

Whatever you need to tell yourself.

I don't need to tell myself anything. If you think this is equivalent than you have already forgotten the mass confusion around the xbox one. If anything the Switch is underwhelming, it doesn't come close to the messaging mistakes that Microsoft made.

It's a fucking shitshow.

It's really not. Them not yet announcing the price of their online service and not having specific details about their internal hardware less than 24 hours after their proper reveal is not a shitshow.

This app stuff is weird, but it's probably not something that will even come across people's radars. How do I voicechat isn't going to be the first question that comes to a lot of people's minds when it comes to Nintendo hardware.

For a further comparison, Sony didn't even reveal that online would become paid on the PS4 until months after the consoles reveal. It's not like that is exactly a huge deal.

Thats fucking bizarre. And I love how he really didn't answer the question of why we can only play the VC title for a month free.

The 3DS will fade away, simply because its hardware is to old, its sales numbers spiked with Pokemon, and Pokemon was the last heavy hitter they had for the system. They can continue to say theyll support it but anything beyond 2018 isn't happening, at least with 1st party titles.

Okay so I've been skeptical about this from the once it was announced. Something about this doesn't add up because you can preorder a 3rd party headset at Gamestop.

Does that plug into your phone?!

Edit: I'm going to have to look this up. I distinctly remember the guy on line in front of me being asked by an employee if he wanted to preorder any accessories and mentioning a headset. To which the guy put money down for.

Are you talking about these?

Yeah you can plug those into any standard 3.5 audio jack including the ones on your cell phone (unless you got that new iphone).

Really people these "headsets" are just headphones with a Mic on the wire and they are no different than the "headset" Sony was selling for PS Vita near it's launch.

A call doesn't interrupt your game chat. You can answer your call while the app is in the background. Also, you can have an app mute phone ringing. In fact, I wish SmartGlass was less laggy. I would control my Xbox dashboard exclusive with my phone using the touch screen. Navigating the menus with a stick is shit, and nevermind typing something.

Eh, people have friends who they don't know in real life. In that regard this app is cool. But that's about it. Nintendo should've had a way to chat from the console when you're home and from the pad itself when you're on the go. The current method is far too cumbersome. They mention the bulky headset but forget that you'll now have to have fiddle with volumes so you can hear and chat with your friend while also listening to the game you're trying to play.

Okay, so let's just ignore how silly it is that it appears that there won't be a simple, native way to chat on the Switch.

What you are describing with Discord is something that is more or less independent of a system, and is more about group chat with similar gamers. Either you can call or text or Snapchat your friends about games, or you can just downloads Discord and use that.

Please explain why Nintendo needs a propriety version of Discord that's a paid for app for smart devices?

I think it's asinine and I don't see how you justify it. At best it's a proprietary version of a free application.

That's why most of us already used Discord if we didn't want to give away phone numbers.

This doesn't solve any problem, it just adds another layer to cut through.

The app can be aware of the game volumes. that is actually why I wish Discord was fully integrated into PSN/XBL. It could lower the game volume when my friends are talking or use proximity volume.

Because Snapchat/Discord are not integrated with the game. If this app is actually aware of the game you are playing, it opens up tons of possibilities. I think it is a stupid fucking move that Nintendo is making you pay for it, but it is forward thinking to decouple the communication experience from the console.

And having the ability to voice chat through the console in addition would make that all impossible to do because.....

Okay, so the app runs in the background.

So what if I don't want to have to use my phone to voice chat on my console? What if it's charging across the room? Why is Nintendo forcing the use of this app?

If they want to offer the app as an option, fantastic. But to force it? Nope.

And to make it an app where you have to pay to gain voice chat functionality (as it currently appears)? Double nope with a side of fuck you, Nintendo.
