Wait a second... Who's buying all that DLC?

Srs question.

Loads of people here on GAF are disgusted by day1 DLC, Season Passes, and DLC in general. It's a discussion point in nearly every thread.
Even outside GAF the disgust of DLC is real, look at the Final Bosman for instance.

My question is, how many of you are actually buying it? They keep selling it so it must be working.

I myself have never bought any. Nobody I know IRL buys DLC either? (EU)
So I though maybe it's a US thing? Like pre-order bonusses @ Gamestop etc?

EDIT: always amazes me how GAF jumps so conclusions; Bold text incoming.

I am aware that GAF does not equal the entire gaming community of the world.
That's why I mentioned that even outside of GAF people have this sentiment.
Also, if most of GAF has this feeling its safe to assume that a majority on other gaming boards have the same feeling, and therefor a lot of people have the same feeling about DLC

Being disgusted by DLC in general is kind of insane. The first DLC I bought was Wipeout HD's Fury expansion back in 2009, and the amount of great content for 10 measly bucks was incredible. And there's been plenty more like that since. Of course there's a lot of DLC available that's a rip off, but it's easy to avoid.

I buy a shitload of games, but I can't recall buying DLC...I'm sure there's something, but I can't remember.

Last one may have been Gears of War 3...I was way into the Horde mode and I think I grabbed some extra maps at one point. That's all that comes to mind.

I bought Bioshock Infinite DLC. Great stuff.

There's nothing bad with DLC. If the content is good they it's nice if not you don't need to buy it.

You see a lot of people here that either bought stuff like Destiny's DLC or CODs. it's not rare.

I would not consider The Final Bosman "outside of GAF" given he posts here and mentions GAF a lot

He's just a user with a video show

GAF, or even dedicated gaming websites, don't necessarily represent the majority of casual consumers.

I haven't bought any season pass other than the Mario Kart 8 one since it did DLC fairly well.
Only dlc I've purchased so far. But if the dlc is good, why not

Why buy video games at all ? I'll take a wild shot in the dark and you pay what you pay for a game because you find value to justify that purchase.

If you buy a game day one when it's $60.00 MSRP USA, then you are saying to the devs and pubs that this is worth your money and your time.

If you buy a game once it hits bargain bin dollars then you are saying to them you feel NOW it is worth your time and money.

With DLC---it's the same logic. People buy what they think is worth their money and their time.

MKX is a great example. Plenty of people bought that Kombat pack. Plenty of people are only buying single pieces once they roll out. Plenty of people are avoiding the game altogether in hopes of an "ultimate" edition in a year or two with all the dlc packed in.

Your money. Do what you want with it.

I DO! if I enjoy a game and I want to spend more time "in that game world" then I will definitely buy DLC at full price. It is rare, but sometimes I can get a season pass for sale (like Black Flag season pass on xb360 for ten bucks) and I had a decent time with the game, you better believe I will buy it.

Here are some examples of who are buying all that DLC btw...

Pro-tip: Everyone. Most people who are actually interested in playing a certain game end up buying at least some of the DLC, at least the essential ones. It's a totally normal part of gaming now. People might bitch and complain about DLC when it is announced, and often it is justified, but in the end, if they care about the game and like it, they want more out of it and will buy the DLC anyway even while complaining.

I'm a big fan of the dramatic declarations involving boycotts starting only after their favorite games are released.

"Games company is a horrible company. After game A and game B release I am done with this fucking joke of a company."

Such steadfast resolve! You sure convinced me you're done with that nasty company!

I only really dislike being locked out of things via preorders. Other than that, I guess I'm buying DLC? I don't buy much, but if a game is good, I'll often feel I want more and that the devs deserve support. No harm if the content is actually well designed.

I'll buy DLC for games I really enjoy, although I'll generally wait for a discount. In a few rare cases where I'm super psyched for a game I'll get pre-order DLC (i.e., Mass Effect 3).

I don't buy season passes ahead of time though because I just don't think it's very intelligent to blindly spend money on something you don't fully understand, and season passes generally come with very vague descriptions of what the content might be.

I always buy the Call of Duty season pass, and never think twice. Also picked up the Destiny expansion pass too with similar feelings.

When I play games I want all the content available, while I despise certain DLC systems, I still want that content in my game so I can enjoy everything to the fullest.

my bro buys a lot of call of duty DLC, mainly the ones that have zombie maps, from WaW to blops/blops 2 and now advanced warfare

I bought mario kart 8 maps, pretty good price for those skins and map, thats pretty much it.

my friend buys a lot of season passes for games, like its insane, wish i had that kind of money to use on games haha

Same, if there is any DLC available for games I own I'll get it, season passes, car packs, costumes etc, why not? Don't care about pre-order bonuses though.

I was kidding. Mostly.

The only time I won't buy DLC is when there's 50 pieces of small DLC (a surprising amount of Vita games) and I'll just get turned off from all of it. Also DLC rarely gets discounted on consoles so I hardly pick any up

On Steam? It gets so cheap after a while that why the hell not? Spend $5 to get what people spent $80 for back at launch for the base game plus season pass.

My understanding is that a lot of people joined that group after buying the game and playing it; since it was a public group, people who like the game were joining specifically as some kind of weird meta-protest.

I buy DLC. And honestly, while there are plenty of examples of scummy, or at least questionable, DLC practices, I think the DLC hate is really overblown. Maybe it's because detractors generalize so much?

Being disgusted by DLC in general is kind of insane. The first DLC I bought was Wipeout HD's Fury expansion back in 2009, and the amount of great content for 10 measly bucks was incredible. And there's been plenty more like that since. Of course there's a lot of DLC available that's a rip off, but it's easy to avoid.

Exactly. People who still hate DLC in 2015 boggle my mind.

Probably the same people who get suckered into pre-ordering games and Gamestop and EB games.

I've purchased some dlc in the past and if I really like the game I'll buy it as soon as its available.

Unless it's on super sale (Titanfall) or really worth it (Mario Kart 8, Ace Attorney 5, Gran Turismo, Dark Souls, Fury for Wipeout HD) not really.

I support decently priced, full featured, substantial DLC.

I don't see a problem with it.

If it's something like, 'supercool armor DLC' or 'here is a mode that should've been in the game!!', I'm not buying of course.

I do.
If it's good I'll buy it. Dishonored had some pretty great DLC. Why shouldn't I buy it?

In fact, I'd go as far as say that Dishonored's DLC is flat out better than the main game and almost as long. I would never miss out on it just because it's DLC--it's totally worth the price.

I've bought a few DLCs here and there but I've only ever bought two season passes in my life and coincidentally both were Nintendo's (who apparently knows how to make dlc right): Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors.

Season passes generally have multiplayer stuff I'm not interested in and it ends up being cheaper to just buy the DLC I do want.

It's me. I'm buying the DLC. All of it. And there's nothing you can do to stop me!

But seriously, though, a blanket statement that all DLC is terrible and wrong is just as incorrect as a blanket statement that every game should have DLC. There are many situations where DLC is quite reasonable:

1. The market for the game is much larger than was anticipated or was simply unknown prior to release. A game's budget must respect the projected income it will generate for a studio to stay afloat. Therefore, if a game ends up making far more than it was budgeted for, it's entirely reasonable for a studio to re-invest some of that back into expanding the game through DLC. (I believe this was the case for Dark Souls, for example.)

2. The game had to meet a timing window due to publisher expectations (especially for first-party studios who need to fill a slot in the console's schedule). These windows tend to be extremely inflexible (example: Halo 5 will be released in time for holiday sales, come hell or poor-QA water) and require cutting a lot of planned and semi-complete content to meet an early code-lock. I know most gamers don't have a lot of sympathy for this scenario, but it's relatively easy to understand how and why it happens.

3. The game has a significant online competitive element that, once it's had time to "settle" over millions of games played, proves to need larger changes that are possible with normal patching to improve. Civilization, for example, tends to need massive new systems to deal with some of the underlying problems, to the extent that a simple nerf/buff or minor content patch will not be sufficient.

I generally agree that planning DLC in advance is a poor way of going about it, but I think when it's used as a corrective or supplemental tool that it's quite good, and I'm hopeful to see it completely abolish the old methodology of having 'editions' of certain types of games that have to be re-bought entirely (fighters, 4X, RTS, etc.) even if some of the stalwarts of the industry are ridiculously resistant to that happening.

I buy all the DLC for every game I like.

Such an affordable form of entertainment overall; a game + DLC is maybe $100, and I often spend dozens or hundreds of hours with a game.
